Re: Ride
they've added a fair few dates, mainly festivals. but unlike Slowdive, at least they are doing a fair amount of 'proper' dates too.
it's not actually too long now until the gigs! exciting.

ditto... the initial link sent out said 'tickets not available' so I thought it was sold out..
then I was reminded that the proper link was coming via the band's email newsletter! job done. I am well excited.

No better to see Ride other than their hometown ! Grab a pint at the Turf Tavern before the gig. I used to work there for a bit.

will write a full review on the gigs thread when I have more time.. but Ride were superb in Oxford on Sunday night... the atmosphere from the audience was pretty insane, the setlist was not as obvious as expected (Cool Your Boots!) and Loz was ... Loz!!!

Re: Ride
It was bloody awesome, considering this was their first gig back, get they were really tight and super loud in places.
Me and my mate diverted to collect angelsighs en route and we were all in absolute awe. Just one of those not often repeated evenings that will remain a happy memory.
Highlights were aplenty. The opener of Polar Bear was good, but Seagull was ferocious and you just knew all would be well. Twisterella was a bit limp and lacked the drive of the recorded version but really after that there was hardly any respite. surprise inclusion of Black Nite Crash was well received and worked well nestled mid set. The gig just got better as it wore, the band relaxed and delivered in spades, From Chrome Waves on-wards it was amazing. The Drive Blind noise bit was proper loud before going back into the song, LTAB was majestic and Chelsea Girl hit the sweet spot right out of the middle of the bat.
To be frank, we were all just open mouthed at the end. Cannot wait fort Manchester
Mark sung well all night, harmonies cbetween both were good and Loz was just, well Loz, one of the best sticksman on the circuit to my mind
What a night, well worth getting int 1am for

Re: Ride
yeah not much more I can add to that. there was a bit of roughness around the edges but they sounded so match fit and very much into it!
I will admit to a bit of trepidation as to how good the gig would be.. this was a chance to finally see one of my favourite bands ever. they didn't let me down.
Will agree that Twisterella sounded a bit clunky- I think it's a great pop song but has never come across particularly well live. I would also say the same about Chrome Waves, although I know Aquarian Time disagrees.
it's also worth mentioning that the atmosphere itself was incredible. It felt electric as soon as the lights went down and they walked on stage. love from the crowd was crazy and I am sure they can't help but feed off that.
just look at that setlist.. all the main boxes ticked and also some total surprises- I mean c'mon, who was expecting Cool Your Boots? and Black Nite Crash was a nice bit of no nonsense rocking.
and Loz, oh man, Loz.. this guy is a phenomenal drummer. such a great feel and never plays boring beats but is also never self indulgent with it. a total hero.
Ride wrote great pop songs but they could also bring the noise when needed and they demonstrated both sides. Seagull was massive. the noise bit of Drive Blind was in the vein of the climaxes at the end of Spz shows.

I don't think they are coming across too well there. Radio sessions can make everything sound a bit dry. and Andy's voice doesn't sound great.

That Drive Blind sounds bloody ferocious. Saw them quite a few times back when but I wish I was going to see them now. Just can't afford a trip to London. Hopefully they'll do a full tour and come somewhere a bit nearer the South West.

I was at the same show as Muscles. It remains the loudest show I ever saw. I thought blood was pouring out of my ears as I left The Latin Quarter.

Wow was that with LUSH.spzretent wrote:I saw them in the 90's on a dual tour with Lush. It was the loudest show i have ever seen. I was certain blood must be dripping from my ears as I walked out.
They were good.
Cannot remember that.
I saw Lush a few times.
I do remember you got us
Backstage with lush.
Micky and Emma total hotties.
It was Mickys birthday. I think...
After reading this entire thread
I do remember RIDE were exciting
In that they drew lots of chicks to the gigs
I remember MBV being loud too.
But i think it was just that 20 minute feedback noise
Thing they do...ridiculous.
Nothing funnier than Mcgee stories about
How much weed Shields smoked and having
His house barricaded with sandbags
And bankrupting creation
He called shields a dick.
The few times i talked to him.
Which is hilarious to me.
Joan Jett was loud as fuck too.
Completely enjoyed the earbleed.
But ride...that noise haha.

Re: Ride
I did lights at a Xmas show Ride played with Lush at the Jericho Tavern in Oxford in 1990 I think (which probably means it was 1991). Was deaf as a stump for days afterwards. Also, given the amount of drinking that went on, we had to do the get out the next day for health and safety reasons.

they're not particularly loud now. I think most bands tend to tone that down as they get older (extreme volume can be considered a gimmick)- MBV, Mogwai etc

on the last tour (couple of years back?) they had toned it down slightly but noticeably. they were loud but I didn't feel the need for earplugs (happy to accept my ears may already be fucked though!)

the last spz show i went to had earplugs being given out. i kinda wished i had taken some. the quiet bits were bliss but the loud was too loud imo!

Re: Ride
I didn`t think they had toned it down at all, I saw them at the Barrowlands and they played at a ridiculous volume from start to finish , with the `holocaust ` section and Wonder 2 stepping up another couple a gears still, but I wouldn`t say it was a gimmick, its all part of the MBV experience, always has been, seen them 5 times over the years back to `89 and volume has always been an integral part of the show, although do think a bit much is made of it, I do expect Ride to be loud next week as well and the 2 JAMC shows I caught last year were played at a phenomenal volume as well years ringing for days, angelsighs wrote:so I've heard- I didn't see them on that tour.natty wrote:MBV hadn't toned it down at all when I saw them in 2008. Re: Ride
Ride were really incredible tonight in Glasgow. Not as loud as i would have hoped but they really went for it and seemed to be having a ball all over again. Loz is untouchable - just incredible. The noise that occurs in the middle of Drive Blind was phenomenal... 4mins of completed blissed out chaos. All tracks from the earlier albums with Black Nite Crash the only exception, but that was a really kick-ass version too. All the classics played, so really can't complain. Andy left with a "See you all soon..." which i hope is very true!

More gigs announced to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of Nowhere.
Sunday 11th October Leeds O2 Academy
Wednesday 14th October London O2 Academy Brixton
Thursday 15th October Liverpool O2 Academy
Saturday 17th October Bristol Anson Rooms
Sunday 18th October Newcastle O2 Academy
Monday 19th October Edinburgh Corn Exchange
Wednesday 21st October Nottingham Rock City
Thursday 22nd October Birmingham Institute
Surprising that there is nothing on Friday 16th October and no MCR gig either. I shall probably be found in the Dispensary on Renshaw Street (where else would an Outpatient go??) prior to the Liverpool gig.
Hopefully they avoid playing the album in order as that would be dull. Just play everything off the album and the early e.p.s randomly instead. A 16 minute version of Nowhere would be nice to see.....
There are more dates in the USofA too....
Thursday 17th September Washington DC 9:30 Club
Saturday 19th September Philadelphia Theatre of Living Arts
Monday 21st September New York Irving Plaza
Tuesday 22nd September New York Irving Plaza
Friday 25th September Chicago Riviera
Saturday 26th September Cincinnati MidPoint Festival
Sunday 27th September Champaign Pygmalion Festival
Tuesday 29th September Minneapolis Mill City
Thursday 1st October Detroit St Andrews
Friday 2nd October Cleveland House of Blues
Saturday 3rd October Boston Paradise Institute
And even:Fun Fun Fun Festival in Austin, Texas on Saturday 7th November with more dates to be announced around that. Then you would imagine an Xmas show or two in the UK followed by Australian/NZ/Asian festival season in Jan&Feb....Kerrrrrching $$$$

Re: Ride
nice one! Birmingham Institute for me, nice venue.
it doesn't seem to explicitly mention that they are playing Nowhere, but looks very likely.
I'd love to hear some of my personal favourites like In a Different Place and Here & Now
I wonder how easy/difficult it will be to get tickets for these dates?

Well, as I said I think earlier in the thread before the dates were even announced, I'm only really a fan of Nowhere and it was a bit light on that for me. I thought it would be one where I would be blown away and enjoyed everything live but it wasn't to be. I wouldn't say they played badly, so if you really like them, do go for sure.

Re: Ride
There were a bunch of us at the show with James T. Suffice to say that his view was not commonly held . OK, the gig could have been louder, but we were right at the back under the ceiling so we were trading off decent sound for a better view. I, and others on here thought it was a pretty good show, to say the very least. I'm looking forward to the October shows already.Greeny wrote:Really interested to hear more James - that's the first negative 'review' I've seen and both of the mates I have who've been to their comeback gigs haven't stopped raving about them since.James T wrote:Are they playing Nowhere? Re: Ride
I'd go as far as to say that the Manc show is my gig of the year (so far)... or maybe Oxford.. point is the comeback has been sensational for me. I'm a huge fan, but I was prepared for it to go either way.
really hoping to get tickets for this, but it's hard to gauge how much demand is gonna be there. not sure if now all the excitement has died down about them reforming, these dates might not sell out so quickly.
it would be fucking cool to hear more of those early EP tracks too.. Perfect Time, Furthest Sense, Today

I think you`ll have little trouble getting a ticket this time round, the Glasgow gig sold out pretty sharpish, but I think that was on the back of touts/scalpers hoovering them up, as I walked up tickets were widely available at face value.angelsighs wrote:I'd go as far as to say that the Manc show is my gig of the year (so far)... or maybe Oxford.. point is the comeback has been sensational for me. The Scottish leg this time is in the barn like Edinburgh Corn Exchange, don`t think I`ve ever heard anyone say a good word about this place, and don`t anticipate any prob`s getting a ticket this time, whether that's reflected round the country, I`m not sure but would say probably yes.
Re: Ride
Indeed - my mates had two spares for the Roundhouse and they actually couldn't give them away outside the venue, so overbought were the touts...niamhm wrote:

I love it when the touts take a caning. After the first Ladies and Gentlemen album shows at the RFH a tout came on here and whinged about loosing his money. One of my favourite ever posts here! We gave a spare ticket away to a bloke outside the gig causing a tout to call my mate a c**t, which he regards as one of his proudest moments in his gig-going career. I really can't stand touts, they are utter parasitesGreeny wrote:Indeed - my mates had two spares for the Roundhouse and they actually couldn't give them away outside the venue, so overbought were the touts...niamhm wrote:

yeah I reckon you're right niamh. I don't think I'll have trouble, probably just getting a bit paranoid.niamhm wrote:I think you`ll have little trouble getting a ticket this time round, the Glasgow gig sold out pretty sharpish, but I think that was on the back of touts/scalpers hoovering them up, as I walked up tickets were widely available at face value.angelsighs wrote:I'd go as far as to say that the Manc show is my gig of the year (so far)... or maybe Oxford.. point is the comeback has been sensational for me. touts really are scum, I like it when they get unstuck too. if they judge it wrong sometimes they almost literally have to give tickets away!
