why did broc say this was acoustic? surely they're not reverting back for one gig?

i had heard a rumour it would be with a full gospel choir.

40 euro is a bit steep. i've been travelling a lot to see the band recently and while their recent irish shows werent too expensive, this is kinda asshole-fingeringly unfunny. or something. but i guess i'll pay it anyway.

edit: it's five euro service charge thru those wankers too. maybe it's cheaper buying from their boxoffice if it's even possible:
http://www.kilkennyarts.ie/booking/index.html

i'll be checking tomorrow maybe so if nobody does before then i'll let youse know how i got on.
bloody ticketbastard is right on the money. depressing fuckers is also not far off.

My mistake if it's not acoustic, thought I read it somewhere earlier at work.

And also for posting in the wrong section!!

All the same I won't be going, just can't stretch the funds after seeing them last month along with Leonard Cohen last week, MBV next Sunday in Manchester and Magnetic Fields, Tom Waits and Daniel Johnston all in the next month or so.

Anyway I'm happy enough to have seen them in May, not bothered to miss this one.

Enjoy it though and good to see them play outside Dublin and Belfast again. I rememeber seeing them in the early 90s in Leisureland in Galway where I'm from, one of the worst possible venues possible...

There are loads of hotels in town. I suggest the Kilkenny Inn as it's just around the corner. Not sure what the prices are like though.

cheers!
seems they're fully booked on the 17th (rumours of the full gospel choir? ) but i'll give them a bell soon and they should at least be able to turn me on to something else.
i might actually drive down. i cant see it being as raucous as the dublin and belfast shows. don't think i'd miss alcohol that much.

well, i probably would. so that's that.

Surely they'll not allow booze in a cathedral. Apart from the altar wine of course.

From Dublin, what method of public transport would be the best way to travel to Kilkenny given it's on a Sunday? And how much is that likely to cost?

I doubt there is a bar to be honest, given that it's in a church.

Anyone got any plans for getting to/from this from Dublin? Seems like the last train back on a Sunday's around 7ish and the last bus is at 10.15, which would be cutting it a little fine.

A football match on Sky before attending church, hope the weather is nice. Obviously no bar at church, but where do the crows go for their sauce

Anybody got any ideas as to what the setlist might be like?

Hopefully it'll be a little different to Tripod, just because it's so soon afterward. The only change I've seen anywhere was replacing Take Me To The Otherside with Cop Shoot Cop from the TV footage of Glastonbury.

some real nice weather we're having, eh?
and that's a really stupid thing for me to say on the eve of the concert.

is this a functioning cathedral? do they have official relgious services/masses in it still? i ask cause i kind of imagine/hope there'll be some sort of bar in the venue, just maybe not allowed to bring drinks into the "arena" proper.

so yea, hoping for some good fun. if they play lord let it rain on me i might just burst into tears though.

hey,

first time post here - so hopefully i won't step on anyone's toes.

yeah, they absolutely totally rocked. Its been a long time since i've seen them (94ish in the tivoli), and this was a much better show than that. The most unbelievable venue, accoustics and lightshow.

"Shine a light" was immense, other highlights for me were come together and lord, can you hear me. As their finish was so big (very loud / very stroby) I was sure they weren't coming back - but when they did it was great, very moving and epic.

Well done to KAF for booking them in that venue. the perfect match.

So here's the set list (played about 90 mins.):

Amazing Grace (intro)
You Lie You Cheat
Shine A Light
Cheapster
Soul On Fire
Sweet Talk
Sitting On Fire
Walkin' With Jesus
Oh Baby
Rated X
Lay Back In The Sun
Death Take Your Fiddle
She Kissed Me
Come Together
Take Me To The Other Side

Lord Can You Hear Me? (encore)

Well this was way better than the Tripod gig back in May and the AG tour but (yes, there had to be one) given the venue i was kinda hoping for something a bit special setlist wise. How about any of Angel Sigh, If I Were With Her Now, Take Good Care Of It, Electric Mainline, Home Of The Brave, Don't Go(Stay With Me)?
Or even something off LICD, not one of my favourite albums but it puzzles me why he seems to be ignoring it. Someone mentioned in another thread that there's a big mid-set lull with the A&E/AG material and i'd have to agree, it definitely seems to be the opportunity for toilet/smoke break for most people.
Highlights? Shine A Light, Lay Back.., and TMTTOS which all stood head & shoulders above everything else played.

Would like to make it very clear that i DID enjoy this gig and came away from it feeling a lot better than i have done for quite a while after a Spiritualized performance, and yes i was sober.

Also, how many genuine fans do you think were there? Seemed like a lot of people had gotten freebies from the Arts Office to my eyes or were there 'cos it was the last night of the Festival. Then again, maybe i'm just an inverted snob or maybe this is the reality of a Spiritualized audience these days. Fuck knows! More cheese and wine vicar?

i'd agree with that. it's gotten silly now but each time with shine a light it seems to be the new best ever version of that song, but the performance last night was in such perfect harmony with the surroundings. good fun.

as for the audience, i'd guess that's your lot for them at this particular stage of their career. that cork venue looks like the kinda thing where it'd be just fans. but... last night i was too wasted to care to put it bluntly.
bit disappointed in the relative brevity of the set. had wandered up to check the cathedral and caught a bit of the soundcheck and j was running down why don't you smile now? but it never showed up.

and two encounters made the trip even better. i was dandering through town having a toke and as luck would have it just as i had finished j walked round the corner, nearly bumped into each other. i was too nervous to abandon my no stop-and-chat policy and could only mutter good wishes for the show and then he said, "thanks, man" and then i walked on and it was the best conversation of my life.
and THEN! back at the hotel bar where i was quite the worse for wear, the jig saddled up beside me. absolutely lovely and funny guy and i'm sorry i was just so wrecked but it was good fun talking to you/him.

Must say Kilkenny is a lovely place. Anyone in a pub called Anna Conda before the gig ? Playing songs from LICD soon after the band and posse walked in for pre gig pints of guinness was cool. No big review but an absolute top draw gig in an incredible venue. Doggen said it sounded amazing in there even before the gig and being on the front row it did sound great even there, i can only imagine it would have been a wash of greatness further back. Tell me, how well did the vocals travel that night ?? I think a key part to why these performances are so high in quality is not just about the inclusion of the two wonderful backing singers (and be honest, they are both more than that anyway) but the new bassist who is simply brilliant, just two guitars now and it seems they're uping the work load to maximum effect, Tom now on keys so effectively a new keyboard player and the drummer adding great balance to it all. So a partly scaled down band but put all that in the salad bowl and we're getting HUGE performances....Something like that or along those lines...

Don't be sorry for being wasted jack white, that chance encounter was a great laugh/end to a great day. I think i was wasted too....guess i hit beyond the two gallon mark on the guinney that day. Warren Beatty wouldn't do that, now would he !! Do i owe you a drink man ? jack white, if you do go to all the other Irish gigs then enjoy them all as much as the last one and you can always get what you want.

I got photos from the front row, most of which aren't very good but some aren't too bad. How about that one of Doggen, jack white ? He reckoned that made him look good, ha ha ha, on that performance i think he should drink more guinness before gigs.

Well i'd always say that the CN Tower version was the best i'd ever heard, but that might have been eclipsed by the version at St Canice's.....errr, yes i think it was.

Ahhh! That makes more sense now. I think the "I am a problem solver" line is from Pulp Fiction (could be completely wrong yet again...).

Funny side note: I was walking out of my friend's apartment tonight and there was a little cat sitting on some steps. After playing with it for a second, I looked at its tag and it said "Krazee Eyez Killah" on it. It's probably the funniest thing you can ever see written on a little timid cat's pink collar.

re: 'the fucking problem solving'. i had seen james t using it in a thread a few minutes previous to my post and was so delighted and laughing that when the chance came i just had to echo it. it's all done in good fun and larry is a fucking fucking guy, and a damn skilled curser. as for the debate about the n word that's probably for another thread.

the jig - that photo of doggen is brilliant. it called to mind those iconic rock star images, of maybe even jason! makes him look like a rock n roll god of guitar. which is fair enough, it's a true representation of the guy and the form that he's it. it is a really spectacular shot.

this time last week i was on the long drive to kilkenny.
this week i've got the cold.

as for the vocals (and sound) carrying further back the hall, i took advantage of the smoke break sunray referred too (though i mistimed and sat through rated X, though only cause Oh Baby was AMAZING - mainly due to the bassist, and missed DTYF as a result) and rather than push my way past people at the front where my seat was i just grabed a vacant seat. admittedly it was the row just behind the mixing desk, but it was a beautiful sound and having pieced together my memory spaceman's vocals for the short time i was back there were phenomenal. great fun.
gonna burn brightly

it's only the "N" word I had issue with to start. cant help it. its a huge lightning rod and taken really seriously, at least around these parts. if a white person uttered it like that they most likely wouldn't survive it unscathed.
