R. Crumb: Book of Genesis (Portland Art Museum)

Post by redcloud »

I love a bit of Crumb. I liked him before Zwigoff's film helped make him a household name to some and art museums began hanging his comix's on their walls. As a kid, I used to buy Mad Magazine as well as the old Eerie and Creepy magazines. When I first came across Crumb's Zap and Weirdo comixs they both seemed to be the perfect marriage of Mad's zaniness and Creepy's weirdness.

I've seen a couple Crumb exhibits over the years but this exhibition is truly phenomenal in its ambition. I went down last Friday to the Portland Art Museum to see it and was blown away by the scale and the commitment that Crumb has put into this piece. It reminded me, at times, of Blake's 'Jerusalem' . Awe-inspiring to say the least. I agree with the critic when he says it is exhausting. It's overwhelming and impossible to take it all in on one visit. I will need to go back. Not sure where it is headed next but if it comes to your town be sure to see it:
