Super cosmic rareity

It's fairly unlikely you'd have made it here without ever having heard of Jason's previous incarnation. So here you go, talk away...

Super cosmic rareity

Post by plastic37 »

Hello
Check this out
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUPER-COSMIC-JOY- ... 2a047996fa

I regularly spend my time on ebay checking Spacemen 3 record prices. I'm always amazed at the price that Fire copies of the vinyl albums go for butr that's not the point of this post.

The above item is the first proper rareity i have seen in ages.

I don't think I'll be bidding as the apperance of this item and the deatils that accompany it solve a little Spacemen 3 mystery.

20 years a go i recieved a tape with a load of related stuff on, a loop set, some Telescopes demos and a spacemen track called SUPER COSMIC JOY. Its a great jam - dosen't appear to be based on anything else i have heard - a real unreleased rough gem. So i can tell anyone biodding for this that the track SUPER COSMIC JOY is worth shelling out for. I'm not sure how much but I'm looking forward to watching this one!

Another recent addition to ebay is a SPACEMEN 3 repro '88 tour poster. Nice, but not as nice as the Leeds Warehouse reproductions that were on there a while ago. Wish i'd got one.

Well now that you've posted this there will be people all over it......;)

i'd like to hear the jam, would be nice if the person that wins it would rip it at least, or i guess we can wait for Pete to release it on super rare vinyl made out of ham or something

I have that tape. It's really hard to find but is a poor quality old-fashioned audio cassette. There are other tapes from this era - Oozing Through The Ozone Layer is one.

That retro reprint poster from 1988 is an odd one - I haven't seen that particular design before. Spme great Sp3 posters were on Ebay recently, most of which originally came from Pete K via me!

I'm sure someone will rip it if they haven't already. I have the unreleased track myself but I'm terrible and getting round to that stuff. If they can scan the sleeve and post that too ...

this gets me thinking about a Spacemen 3 digital archive.

Here in Birmingham there are three music heritage archive projects
: Home of Metal (the best one), Birmingham Music Heritage and the Birmingham Music Archive. In Manchester there is the excellent MDMA - Manchester and District Music Archive. I have read about similar things in Coventry and I'm sure other cities run equivalents. I'm know we all love the Spacemen 3.co.uk site and the transcripts of interviews but I'd love to see the original articles and so much more. Is there a Spacemen 3 digital archive? I am sure i could set up a basic one but won't if someone else can point me to something that already exists.

I'm aware of four cassettes of this era that are pretty interesting.

SuperCosmicJoy is well summarised above. The version of Things'll Never Be The Same is otherwise unavailable. The jam at the end is pretty poor in my opinion, but still an interesting rarity. The photo of Pete and Jason playing the same piano during the jam, taken by Clint Boon, ended up on the cover of Performance.

The Holy Bible contains the Northampton demo of Losing Touch With My Mind, which wasn't available at any other way at the time. Of course, it's now easy to get hold of on Taking Drugs...

Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache contains the released version of May The Circle Be Unbroken, although the tape was out before the official release on the B-side of Revolution.

Oozing Through The Ozone Layer includes the demo versions of Come Down Easy and Transparent Radiation that were later bootlegged on 7".

I'd love to get hold of SuperCosmicJoy and Oozing Through The Ozone Layer. I have the other two - in fact, I seem to have ended up with two copies of Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache if anyone fancies a trade...

Bugger. I have just looked over my cassettes but don't have all to hand - I might actually not have Oozing Through The Ozone Layer but it defintely exists.

I have found 2 others. Firstly 'The Holy Bible' which has a demo of 'Losing Touch With Your Mind' on it as well as The Marabar Caves, Jazz Butcher, Telltale Hearts (with Mark Refoy), The Wedding Present, Loop, The Dark Side and The Cogs of Time. The other cassette is 'Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache' which has 'May The Circle Be Unbroken', the released version I'm sure. Also here are Inspiral Carpers, Thrilled Skinny, The Revolving Underseen, The Engagement Party, The Losers, The Dark Side,

I'd love to have one of those.
W: What are we supposed to do with that?
M: Eat it.
W: Eat it? Fucker’s alive.
M: Yeah, you’ve got to kill it.
W: Me? I’m the firelighter and fuel collector.

I'm pretty sure they did a reissue of the Fucked Up Children cassette through Outer Limits with a blue t-shirt. I still have my shirt but can't remember if I have the tape.

There is also a Spacemen 3 video that Outer Limits did with a printed sleeve. Never seen another one. It's all the famous McGee clips, Rapido etc.

Like i say - One day I'll rip my copy.
I spotted another comp tape like this on ebay a while ago. I was interested in it as my band are on it. I watched it rise to ...what was it, £37 or something.
I couldn't believe it.
When i contacted the seller to ask if he had any idea why someone had paid that much he told me that away from the auction of the artefact itself he had sold a copy of the tape for a tenner. And no, he had no idea why the item had gone for so much.

I can't believe it sold for so little - that is so damn rare it's untrue! Took me years to find a copy.

Anyway, here are the Spacemen related tracks. Things'll Never Be The Same sounds great, the Superr Cosmic Jam is quite good too but very chaotic. The rest of the tape is OK but these are obviously the most interesting bits.

Don't say I don't look after you all!

It's good to get these recordings to people who haven't heard them so a pleasure on my part.

I don't normally have any trouble with You Send It transfers Ro - if you are still having problems let me know and I'll re-post them on a new download link.

Runcie made a tape rip,
And he put it on YouSendIt,
Got downloaded by the faithful,
They're busy listening to the tunes now,
A Super Cosmic Space Jam,
And I put it in "My Music",
I said I put it in "My Music",
Just like Sonic & J said.
