The Colenso Parade version of Sacred Lover.

Also, the 2 aforementioned songs with working titles Bedlandings and Take It To The Fridge from the Hackney Empire gig with Spiritualised... not heard these tracks elsewhere. Whether they were recorded for MG or were just new tracks given an airing... Levitation did tend to work pretty quickly...

Not sure how Beggars ended up with the rights to the tracks?
This I have to admit was my fault!!! I had a chat with DF and he told me that the Bickers Meanwhile was to be released on thru Rough Trade(?) and also that Need for Not was to get a revamp, as well as 2 other releases... a Best of and an Early/Unreleased rarities CD... I spoke to him not long after this at a Dragons gig and it turns out Rough Trade had gone bust (RT seem to go to the wall erm... approximately twice a week!!!!!!!). The gods seem to be against this music seeing the light of day - Bastard Gods!!!!! Anyway in my excitement I posted this info on the lev myspace site and since then... nada! I think RT and Beggars have always been closely allied so that may explain that connection but Chrysalis???

Hope this helps a little Sim

I have only one doubt. You say that the Sacred Lover "short version" is a studio version, so then, the Sacred Lover (5:07) where is from??!?!?
It seems that the only track that no one has is Hieronymous Bop apparently.
Saludos amigos, and many thanks!!!!!!!
The (5.07) version is as I previously said from the Need for Not sessions. I think this is the case having read an article years ago when the journalist went to interview the band during mixing of Need for Not and Terry played him a recently completed Sacred Lover!!! I get the "feeling" this is correct regarding the above version! This is the version included - wrongly, I believe - in the MG tracklistings.

The short version is Colenso Parade's original... I just realised that this version has managed to get included in my file of fanclub demos hence your confusion Reborn.... my fault!!!!!!

So... the radio session versions of Sacred Lover (none of the above) and Hieronymous Bop with Terry n Bob are still both to be found (by us!!!) :)

Saludos the noo....

Wow, this topic is like finding the hidden treasure!

I downloaded the MG Bickers-vocals-versions from a link sent to me by the Muso City site mentioned earlier. It has given me many hours of happy listening! But I thought the tracklisting was off too, so thanks to you lot I now have the answers!

I'm looking forward to downloading and hearing those live tapes & radio sessions that I also had once.

Me & my mates used to see Levitation live regularly, and sometimes chatted to the band before & after. Happy days....

Does anyone have the unreleased Dark Start album Zurich?? I can't find it on anywhere on the net.

Anyway, cheers again to all for the info and downloads!

Hi FunkyJP, I have uploaded Zurich for you at the following links...I only have 7 songs that were recorded for the album and as far as I'm aware this seems to be the number of songs that were recorded when the plug was pulled - if anyone has other info it would be greatly appreciated. 3 songs not featured here but that were given an outing live and on the Boxed Set ITV show; The Last Thing She Ever Said, Roman Road and SYJ were not recorded for the album... DF told me this, he was pissed off they didn't!!!! Anyway, I've included these live versions out of interest... all the best, MD :D

Another one from the archive, because it is a beautiful sunny morning and the clocks have gone forward - don't say I'm not good to you!!! This one sees the band in fine humour with TB sounding like he's had a few half shandies and Dave spouting some suitable daft helium oratory!!!! A great extended Pieces of Mary is also of note... same set as the fanclub release except for an added Bedlam

Hokusai, you've spoiled us rotten! Thank you!

So good to hear those MG tracks played live. The last gig I saw was the Bradford date of the 1993 tour which included a number of new tracks, although at the time I had no idea what they were called. I recognised King of Mice when it finally came out on the Australian Ludwin CD but the rest remained a mystery. By the time I got my hands on the Bickers version years later I could no longer remember what the live tracks had sounded like. I'm familiar with 'Take it to the fridge' as this was the untitled track from their Reading 1992 performance that I mentioned in a previous post. Unfortunately there were no clues as to its title from that performance either. I still can't find that tape but this is a much better sounding version from Hackney that you've posted. I remember it very clearly from Reading, the ending is immense! People were standing around looking like they'd literally been pummelled after that. Considering most present in the tent had also just lived through a Cardiacs set I think that finished most off.

Here is the only gig I have with Ludwin on vocals... unfortunately it sounds like it was recorded with a hearing aid in a biscuit tin but still interesting, especially all the new songs. Some songs sound better than others and I dare say we should be thankful to the diligent legger. Most of this came to me in dribs and drabs with the only description being "Unknown" - I have pieced it together best I can and given it a running order although what you see is unlikely to be the running order of the gig and I have the feeling it is incomplete... according to Laura's page they played WR in May/June so not sure if the date is correct... perhaps someone was there or could fill in the gaps?! Anyway...

Setlist

Unknown
Gardens Overflowing
Unknown
World Around
Resist
Unknown
Firefly
Unknown
Under Stone
Tricara

Below is the setlist for the last ever Lev gig at New Cross Venue on 23/9/94 - this may shed some light on possible song titles that are missing above... again someone else maybe able to fill in the gaps...

Twice
World Around
Dredger
Garden's Overflowing
Aeroplanes
Wide
Resist
Breathe
Tricara
Big Chord Melody
Firefly
Understone

hi all,

Sorry to hijack the thread but I can't seem to PM users yet. I've just been googling Laurence O Keefe. I'm a massive Darkstar fan and wanted to see what he was up to. Anyway my google adventure brought me here. TO my surprise there's someone from the Isle of Man (where I live ) and the first thing I read is the mention of the Kaiser Chiefs gig which my band was the support act for.

It's a small world. Good to know there are other Levitation / Darkstar fans out there, especially on the island :)

take it easy folks.

Not at thread hijack at all - you kept on topic!! Again, good to hear of other fans - suspect we could still be counted on the fingers of one hand though!!

I'm going to give a shameless plug to Martyn's band (we don't know each other, that I'm aware of) but I did see them as support for Kaiser Chiefs. Excellent, atmospheric music, with some of the Levitation / Dark Star feel to it (as well as multiple other influences - see following - http://www.myspace.com/planesoverparis)

Re: Levitation - Early Demos

Post by hokusai »

As requested...plus 2 other covers from the below 1990 session... They are tracks 5-8 listed below. I am still trying to get hold of the rest of this content...
Below is some more info regarding these demo sessions provided by the source... once more... enjoy :D Hokusai

Levitation
Early Demos Vol.1
Various London Studios 1990/1991

Path - Cass-DAT-CDR-EAC-WAV-FLACfrontend16

Terry Bickers/Levitation 1st Demo for MCA 1990

1. Untitled
2. Josie
3. Burrows
4. Travel

1st Band Demo 1990

5. Against Nature
6. It's Time
7. Baby Blue
8. Gimme Danger
MCA Demo No.2 Jan 1991

9. Smile
10. Against Nature
11. Usher

Notes:

The first demo was recorded at Blackwing studios in
Borough/South London. The Lineup was Terry-Guitar/Vox
David-Drums and Bic-Bass. Apparently another song called
'Fragile' was recorded but it wasn't up to scratch.

The 1st Proper Band Demo was recorded at Madness' demo
studio and has a cover of The Stooges 'Gimme Danger',
also the eagle-eared might spot a Can sample that forms
the drum pattern for Against Nature.

The second MCA demo has a version of Smile that was
included on the 1st Lev EP, this version has a longer
fadeout however. I'm guessing it was all recorded at
Blackwing again.

These are simply stunning. Quite different to how the tracks became, perhaps because Terry's voice seems clearer in the mix. They're better in my view than the official fanclub release. Look forward to any more you can lay hands on.

I have all of those but I wouldn't upload official tracks either. It's a surefire way to risk attracting the wrong kind of attention, which would mean that the unofficial goodness would have to stop.

What I'm interested in is knowing more about the version of Mantra on the US World Around. I have a copy coming to me shortly, but I never even knew it existed back in the day, and I believe it's supposed to be different.

I agree with ya Onanist regarding official releases getting uploaded, I've tried to limit this purely to rare bootleg material and this being such a cosy fans corner I can see it's going to those who care. The last thing i would want is to deprive the band of any monies - absolutely! I also completely draw the line at posting the Bickers Meanwhile Gardens... God knows how many cds I've sent to Lev fans who've got in touch for MG - on the proviso they buy 5 copies if it ever sees the light of day to give to their pets etc. Although I think the area is greyed a little for me because a lot of this material is deleted and only available second hand so I do have a certain sympathy, although as you say, we may attract the wrong attention! ... I must also admit to feeling like a bit of an uploading jukebox now!!!! ... certainly opened a can of worms but hopefully you all perceive this as someone who loves the music and wants others to enjoy as I do!!!

Anyway, let's keep this a legitimate and good natured Coterie!!!

Yep, let's keep this to un-released stuff, official releases should be off-limits. As pointed out, the World Around and Even When Your Eyes.... releases are very easy to get hold of (and cheaply). For that matter any of the Lev releases can be picked up very cheaply. They're worth it for the lovely artwork.

I've also been looking for a copy of the US World Around with Purgatory and the different Mantra for some time now with little success..... one will turn up one day and I'll be very happy when it does. Where did you locate the copy you found mh? Also, I've seen various mentions of US 12" and/or cassette. Anyone know for certain if it was released as either or both?

Interesting!!!
I bought "Even..." and "World Around" singles on amazon.com at 0.99 dollars, actually I paid more for the shipping than the actual cd's :D
My copy of "World Around" said 4 track in it but was the 3 track version. Was a first, so I didn't bother. I didn't try with the UK one because they didn't send to South America :(

God knows how many cds I've sent to Lev fans who've got in touch for MG - on the proviso they buy 5 copies if it ever sees the light of day to give to their pets etc. Although I think the area is greyed a little for me because a lot of this material is deleted and only available second hand so I do have a certain sympathy, although as you say, we may attract the wrong attention! ...
I agree 100% with you. Sad thing is, as with a lot of music out there that WE WANT to pay for this music to be released, but no one releases it. And we aren't talking about a "Smile" effect here. The music is completed and maybe 99% ready to be released if all the people involved sorted out their differences or simply talk about "money".
I hope that we don't have to wait 30 years to see this released. The clock marks 16 this year, by the way :(

Amazon. :D

They have a few copies: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listin ... mus_ep_olp
Thanks - did you email the sellers to ask if they are definitely the 4-track and not the 3 track version with Jay and Usher? Reason I ask is that I've already fallen fowl of mis-labelling twice through Amazon sellers.

Nah, I'm taking pot luck. :D The seller I bought off is in the US and the record company is correct, but all the same it's no skin off my nose if I end up with a UK version; my 12" is knackered anyway.

looks like i've arrived here a bit too late. I'm an ex-driver for Levitation and a keen collector of their stuff. Seems all the uploads are no longer available on here which is a shame as i have some trades. i also have purgatory & hieronymous bop. will check back now and then to see if there's any life in these pages.

Hey there! Absolutely MASSIVE Levitation fan here. I've been a lurker for ages but decided to sign up as I've recently realised that a lot of my rare Levitation is missing, plus I've recently digitised a bunch of old cassettes and in the bunch were a couple of Levitation goodies. They were sent to me some years ago by someone in the UK who knew both The House Of Love and Levitation and while they're not great quality, they're great to have.

Rapido TV segment (where Terry calls Guy "very creepy")
Unknown radio performance of "Against Nature" (incomplete, starts with radio DJ calling song "Against All Odds" and Terry correcting him!)
Radio Session with "Sacred Lover", "Hieronymous Bop"
Live in London 1991
Live at New Cross Venue, London 1992

My online access is spotty at best but if anyone's interested I'll try to get these uploaded. Converting to mp3s probably isn't the best idea considering the quality to begin with, but WAV files will be too huge (except for Rapido and the radio session). I'd be more than happy to put a data disc or two in the post as well.

Ononist, sending you a PM now!

Cheers everyone!

Haha, no worries at all! Here's another post, hopefully!

I gave the live shows I listed a closer listen last night. The London 1991 show is only 4 songs lasting 25 minutes or so. It seems like an opening slot - very little chatter, right down to business. IIRC, the set list was "Against Nature", "Attached", "Nadine", "Bedlam". Since it's rather short I can probably upload this as a WAV file. The London 1992 show is a full one (a full side of a 90m cassette, then about half of the second side) and is about 9 or 10 tracks. It starts with "Mantra" and goes into "Twice"; it also features "Evergreen". This show is notable because Terry talks...and talks...and talks... :D

Mod edit NightWash: Happy Posting and PMing :)

Hi all

I'm new here. I have registered specifically to join this thread! woo!

I'm very keen to gain live recordings/radio sessions/demos by the mighty Levitation.

@hopechest: I saw Levitation at the New Cross Venue 1992. I wonder if your bootleg is the same gig? PM to follow :)

Hopefully i can add to, and learn from the Meanwhile Gardens discussion. Hokusai is still the go-to guy i see!

The song "Faultless" that appears on the Chain By Day ep is sung by Steve Ludwin and features the word faultless in the lyrics. So i'm guessing that the Terry Bickers version, with totally different lyrics, had a different title? Any ideas??

My Meanwhile Gardens theory/stuff

There is not much to debate when it comes to the songs destined for "Summer". I have two versions, one omits "All At Sea", but other than that the songs are identical. Only the playing orders differ. Slightly confusingly, the file i have shows one song as being "King Of Mice" but plays "Cutwater" and "Faultless (Bickers lyrics)" instead. Given that the band played "Magnifying Glass" and "King Of Mice" back-to-back live, i think it's fair to say "King Of Mice", not "Cutwater", should follow "Magnifying Glass" on "Summer". No?

But what was supposeed to be on "Autumn"? The MySpace tracklist does appear to be a collection of bits and bobs. Why give "Cutwater" away free, and then release it alongside new material TWO ALBUMS LATER? Why include two instrumentals that sound half finished and only feature one guitar? Would the traditional live curtain-raiser "Twice" really be the LAST song on the album?! Does the ancient "Sacred Lover" sit alongside the new material? Hardly...The instrumentals do indeed sound autumnal, but then, i've seen an "Autumn" tracklist that included "Cloudshine", surely the epitome of summer!? So, i think the autumnal feel is a false herring...

Strip it all down, and you are left with only three songs: "I Believe", "Imagine The Sharks", and "Heavy Roller (Wapley Hill). These all share similar production values. As opposed to the slightly muddy sound of the songs on "Summer", these three are more twinkly and spacey. Because of this, i personally feel "Evergreen" would have sounded at home on "Summer", while "Bodiless" is closer in sound to the three songs above.

What about the two mystery stunners played at Hackney Empire?? I'd kill for a studio recording! Given Levitation's work/rehearsal ethic, i feel sure they must have been recorded, but as they have not surfaced, i guess they only exist in very sketchy form. The Bickers version of what later became "Faultless" also has a lighter, spacey sound.

So, what are we left with? A band ambitious enough to want to release two albums in quick succession, but who nose-dived with one and a half albums worth of material in the can. No great mystery. Just a crying shame..

My dreamteam lol. Would you buy it?

Summer
1. Garden's Overflowing
2. Magnifying Glass
3. King Of Mice
4. Even When Your Eyes Are Open
5. Evergreen
6. Food For Powder
7. Greymouth
8. Life Going Faster

Autumn
1. Twice
2. Mystery Hackney song 1 "Bedlandings"
3. Mystery Hackney song 2 "Take It To The Fridge"
4. Bodiless
5. I Believe
6. Faultless (Bickers lyrics)
7. Imagine The Sharks
8. Heavy Roller

In an effort to identify the two unknown songs played at Hackney Empire, i have had a go at cracking the lyrics....I'm sure the band would endorse my results lol Do these lyrics match any of the songs played with Ludwin (Dredger? Aeroplanes? etc?)

"Bedlandings" (Big Chord Melody?)

Imagine the ground, some better share.
If we deny the stars, and we will dance the dawn away.

We share love of the light.

To you to here to miles away.
The more to share the more unique
And go towards eternity.

Scarlet light guides the sun.

"Take It To The Fridge" (Undercarriage?)

On the blind side of the open
Today recoil and all leave me.
Your embers glow before you seek me.

And what's more, these
And what's more, or further
?And don't you dispute to write the word as one.?
Someday. Someday.

(middle eight)
Someday we'll return without will.
Yeah the place will be there.

Theory 2.0. New and confused :!:

I have no faith whatsoever that the tracklisting for Autumn, as posted on MySpace, is correct: Too many old songs, and too many post-Bickers songs. That leaves perhaps four genuine MG songs: Imagine The Sharks, I Believe, "Faultless", and Heavy Roller. Not enough for an album.

But....if Autumn is tracklisted so inaccurately, why should i believe the Summer tracklisting is accurate??

It is not even certain that Meanwhile Gardens would have been released in two parts. But what do you do when you have too much material for one album, and not enough for two? I read somewhere that it was hoped the albums would be available at mid price. Was this to compensate fans for having to buy two albums in quick succession, or......was it because, in total, the two albums would consist of just 12 songs, clocking in at 70ish minutes?

Meanwhile Gardens (70ish minutes)

Bodiless
Even When..
"Faultless"
Food For Powder
Garden's Overflowing
Going Faster
Greymouth
Heavy Roller
I Believe
Imagine The Sharks
King Of Mice
Magnifying Glass

How do you split those 12 songs into two albums? That is something that was probably never decided upon. Personally i would move Bodiless (twinkly) and Magnifying Glass (also quite light-souding) from Summer to Autumn.

Meanwhile Gardens Summer (30ish minutes)

Garden's Overflowing
King Of Mice
Even When..
Food For Powder
Greymouth
Going Faster

Meanwhile Gardens Autumn (40ish minutes)

I Believe
Magnifying Glass
Bodiless
Faultless
Imagine The Sharks
Heavy Roller

It makes sense, but that doesn't mean it's right....

I think it's nigh on impossible to get to the bottom of what Meanwhile Gardens was actually going to look like in 2 album form.

For sure, the tracks circulating as the Autumn album are a mixture of complete, unfinished and old tracks, certainly not a complete album.

Bic did mention in interviews around the time that they had 17 tracks recorded but only an album's worth were in fully mixed state. Given that 7 of those tracks appeared on the Australian MG (Chain By Day and Under Stone being recorded post-Bickers) that would leave 12 tracks (if Bic was being accurate about the 17 tracks). He also mentioned that there was a 9 minute proggy track that was unfinished at the time (this could be I Believe as this comes in at 8:40)

celestial67 - I'll try and get around to re-uploading the demos & live cassette over the next few days.

For all the theorizing, it's the music itself which counts. Personally, i think much of the Meanwhile Gardens material stands up well in comparison to Levitation's past recordings. "I Believe" and "Heavy Roller" are classics. They manage to be expansive but not alienating.

happy new year to you all. nice to see levitation being talked about so enthusiastically from you all and even nicer that it's so long after they split. i've been going through comments and queries on levitation all day and there seems to be a lot of confusion and mis-information going on. firstly, being generally new to these pages i want to just quickly introduce myself to you. back in the late 80's i became a roadie driver for cardiacs and inevitably became levitation's driver roadie in the 90's. i also worked briefly for sheep on drugs, skyscraper & jonah and the wail. i got to know levitation very well and did many gigs for them, took the bands gear along for the world around video shoot where they actually were playing live along to the single for realism in the shoot. i also took the gear along for the may 1992 mark goodier radio session which was a fascinting afternoon and also had the task of driving their gear wales for the barn sessions where i left the band for about a week i think then collected them at the end where dave actually treated me to a hearing of all at sea. the barn by the way is where the mission were at the time doing all their stuff. i have acrap picture of it somewhere. living about 70 miles outside of london (south) i wasn't a full time employed roadie/driver and i never hung out socially with the band except in and around gigs. i don't claim to be an expert on the band and i don't own every thing they have ever released but i am a keen collector just like yourselves. even workin so close with them i still have unanswered questions and untitled tracks on certain bootlegs myself. i can however enlighten you on a few things with meanwhile gardens. i was given at the time, a hand written tape simply called meanwhile gardens 1, the track listing is as you already correctly know except all at sea was never there. meanwhile gardens 2 (autumn) definately never had a finalised track listing because it was still work in progress and that suggested track listing has just been put together as a suggestion. riverside studios, hammersmith is where they used to keep their equipment and regularly rehearse. on the wall of the studio they used to keep a list of all the tracks they needed to work on for the album and being the sad person i am i actually made a note of them so as i could listen out for them myself. here is that list as it was written...

life going faster
moving forward

wide
never odd or even
vaugeries III
imagine the sharks
big chord
greymouth
vaugeries
twice
undercarriage
burrows
splashpool
purgatory
discovery
sowbee
in your hands

not all of these tracks came about as far as i can tell, although i do have some unidentified tracks on certain bootlegs.

anyway, going back to the suggested tracklist for meanwhile gardens 2, the first unknown track which runs at 7:31 is actually a re worked version of burrows, the guy who put it on the musocity link was totally correct. if you listen closely you can hear similarities to the version of burrows on the first mca demo but the lyrics have been changed but the length of the track is similar also. track 4 actually had the working title of heavy roller and the other untitled track which runs at 7:15 is undoubtebly called faultless. a version of this track can be heard on the 1994 chain by day ep. all the tracks in fact that were on the steve ludwin version of the album had to have terry's guitar parts re-worked and of course the vocals.

the missing track titles for the hackney gig were track 4: big chord melody, although i only ever remember seeing the title big chord everywhere. the only time i've seen melody used at the end of it was on the old levitation page http://www.anyware.co.uk/levitation/biography.html ,the other track 6: is called undercarriage. you had the title there all the time danicus.

i am presently searching through all my video collection for all the levitation stuff, i have pretty much everything they did, it's just a case of finding it all ready for trading. im after the following gigs if anyone can help...

Many thanks to all the recent efforts to get our knowledge base, and sounds, up-todate. As people have mentioned, the only real way to become closer to the truth than we already are is to get hold of an ex-band member....and convince them that proper releases will have a market (180gm vinyl anyone?)

Fascinating stuff. At last this thread has a voice of authentic authority :) Many thanks. I really do need to learn to trust my gut feeling more lol. Much of what you say ties in with what i felt, but did not know.

The big file of songs i was sent had either two or three songs titled incorrectly. By swapping the titles of Burrows and Heavy Roller, i thought i had solved the problem, and limited it to two mistakes. When i learned that Hokusai also thought that musocity Burrows was actually Heavy Roller, i thought we must both be right. However, i have had niggling doubts....: Firstly, my version has Heavy Roller titled Heavy Roller (Wapley Hill), meaning it is a barn sessions song. That made it more likely to be an instrumental?? Secondly, i learned that Burrows was on an early demo. That made me think it was probably not an instrumental. Thirdly, a musical clue, beloved of bands giving songs working titles: What does Heavy Roller sound like? Well...it rolls along...:)

Which leads nicely to the two Hackney songs (duckstab, you have them down as tracks 4 and 6?. On my tape, they are tracks 2 and 5). When i discovered the setlist of the band's final gig, i tried to match two of the titles to the Hackney songs. Track two has a verse sung over one big E chord, so i guessed Big Chord (Melody?). Track 5 i just instinctively went for Undercarriage lol I don't know why. Duckstab, you are saying my guesses were right?

Also, are you saying Faultless always had that title, even before the lyrics were changed? Do you know anything about the aborted sesions towards the end of 1992, which were meant to spawn a single? I have read that Garden's Overflowing, Twice, Big Chord, and Undercarriage were all intended for this session.

Was there a definite track ordering for the songs on Meanwhile Gardens 1?

Jsut as a footnote, i have a promo CD of Even When Your Eyes Are Open. The sticker on the back says the forthcoming album, "Meanwhile Gardens, is due for release 9th June". No mention of a part one, or Summer.

jesus christ, that's a worse delay than spiritualized/spectrum  . I fully agree with sm-iom's view that we should pressure past band members into making an awesome one-off vinyl release (perhaps we could do this by putting up a number of 'would pay for the vinyl' votes, so they realised they wouldn't be losing money?)

ps. happy new year!

I recieved a lot of my files after working with the band as band members never seem as completist as us guys, and it was always difficult getting things out of them. Terry was very much a leader and things changed all the time, he was a fast worker too.my source supplied me with lots of mistakes within the files i have and it is very complicated sorting them out even for myself. i was never at any rehearsals because i lived too far away so only got to hear new tracks being tried out at the shows, i couldn't believe how often new songs would appear, i think some may of been played during the sound checks only. I remember hearing twice for the first time and i was just blown away by it, it was immense live.

The Burrows track is definately correct but the lyrics were completely re-written from that early demo version. heavy roller i have to assume is right on my copy, it's instrumental and i assumed that it would eventually have lyrics. like with the track neither odd nor even, it's insrtumental here but it does have lyrics and can be heard on certain bootlegs like oxford 24-4-92. i'm convince heavy roller must be correct as i have it, but have never heard it live that i can remember.

Not sure what track list you have for hackney but i've just checked it and i can clearly hear the first 3 tracks flowing with positive continuity, but after that the tracks could easily be mixed about by some bad editor. apart from the sound being bad the editing is really bad, but here's the track list i have, what's yours?

mantra
resist
even when your eyes are open
big chord melody
firefly
undercarriage
bodiless
magnifying glass
king of mice
bedlam

i think all those tracks you mentioned were intended for the second part of MG. Vagueries was a track that was definately heading for the album but no way was purgatory and cut water. Neither odd Nor Even was definately unfinished. the track in my list called discovery i forgot to mention was the working title for magnifying glass.

i knew nothing at the time about this summer/autumn thing but did hear that it was going to be a possible two parter. i have that promo too.

i don't feel we will ever see a terry version released even though it was talked about before rough trade went bust.

i might make an effort and get back in touch with laurence one day as he was always the sensible one. i know he fucking hated that first album though and just can't play it anymore. he was always helpful in the past with music as was bob but i'd have to find a way back to him through the few cardiacs contacts i have. it doesn't help though with the fact that in now live in spain either.

So glad you dropped by again dusckstab2+

Bet they were an interesting band to tour with!

Brilliant to have some clarity on the burrows/heavy heavy roller issue amongst others.

Looking at the list of titles you copied down from the studio wall, I guess some tracks either didn't make it or underwent a name change along the way (I note there is no King of Mice, Bodiless, Magnifying Glass, Garden's Overflowing in that list).

Agree, would be great if this thread could come to the attention of someone at Beggars Banquet (I think they own the rights now, unless Chrysalis do?) to consider a release.

btw, seeing as this is a Spz forum, Bic (Cardiacs/Levitation) had a short spell as tour guitarist with the Pet Shop Boys. The other guitarist on that tour... Mark Refoy.

Hi guys!!! Happy new year to you all!!!
I was way off this forum for a long time 'cause I was busy with a lot of work and personal problems.
What an AMAZING amount of info you put here Sim, duckstab and Danicus, thank you!!!!
1) I think that maybe we should start a Levitation forum!!! :D
2) I think that was Hokusai that said to me once that the release of the old stuff was talked a lot years ago but now is not certain that the Meanwhile and other rare stuff see the light of day.
3) I can pay gladly 30 pounds for a double deluxe edition of all the "Meanwhile Gardens" stuff. But to make a campaing first I think that some kind of forum is neccesary.
I'll try to be more active this year with this.
Saludos!!!

Danicus wrote:@duckstab: my version of Hackney also flows but our tracklistings are slightly different:

Mantra/Resist
Big Chord
Even When...
Firefly
Undercarriage
Bodiless
Magnifying Glass
King Of Mice
Bedlam

I'll have another listen, but i've never noticed any editing, apart from the fade-out on King of Mice, presumable because the recording tape was running out! King of Mice definitely followed straight on from Magnifying Glass, and Bedlam obviously closed the show. I was at the gig. Two weeks later i walked into an independent record shop in Salisbury, and the recording was on the shelf! I bought it, copied it, and gave the original to the friend that went to the gig with me. Therefore i don't have the original, but it had a light blue photocopied cover. Very basic. So, my version is getting on for 18 years old! Wish i had it on CD, as the tape now slurs.

To my ears, the recording of Twice doesn't quite sound complete, and Magnifying Glass and Bodiless sound a bit...empty? Perhaps that is because i'm comparing them to the rather boomy versions played at Hackney. Do you have any studio recordings of Big Chord and Undercarriage? They are cracking songs. Those two, plus Twice and Garden's Overflowing would have made a good punky e.p., no?

@reborn: dude, if i had the technological knowhow, i'd start a Levitation forum.

I'm sure like many other contributors here, i don't feel guilty about owning the Meanwhile Gardens recordings because i know full well that if it was ever released, i would but at least one copy lol

strange how our tracklists vary. if you have it on tape then your track list has to be right because i recieved this as an internet download with the tracks already seperated so plenty of room for error there. i'm gonna listen to it with your listing which is difficult as it has being edited on tracks before they finish playing. but i feel you must be right having the tape. looks like a job for wavelab for me.

i too was at the gig but working on this one. i did get to see SPZ though. i'm not a big fan of jason but they did play well. i'd been doing a lot of cardiacs activity recently too so it was a totally different vibe. i still have my hackney pass too.

i don't have studio versions of big chord or undercarriage i'm afraid. i only have an instrumental version of twice but i do have gardens overflowing completed, don't you? it would make a great ep indeed....dream on!

a levitation forum or blog would be good. we could all send our bits of memorabillia into it. an a-z of all known tracks would be good too.

i must correct the false info i put up yesterday. i was trying to rack my brain and remember the working title for magnfying glass and i stupidly said it was discovery from that list, but i was wrong as i located an old demo and there it was listed as 'mad piano'. i have to versions of i believe also, so i have some listening to do soon. busy ripping videos at the moment though.

do you live in salisbury? i used to live in andover before i moved here to spain 7 years ago.

Lols at "Mad Piano". I was right about their working titles being musical! On the Hackney tape, you can't hear any piano, but the studio version does indeed have a plinky-plonk mad piano part.

Some kind of Levitation database/forum would be cool. I do feel a tad guilty about invading a Spritualized forum to talk about another band. I have Spacemen 3 stuff on vinyl, but no Spiritualized. They were impressive at Hackney though :)
