Getting back to Portishead, for the best before and after comparison maybe you should see them live. I just saw them in Cologne and was deeply underwhelmed by most of the new tracks (I thought Machine gun was OK). Cambridge and London for me. I was at the Sage gig and remember not being overly impressed by the new stuff which seemed kind of half finished. Mind you, I thought the same when I saw them on the american mini tour just before the release of AG. Hopefully in the interim they will have worked on live...
