the two purephase mixes do differ, pierce completed a 1995 nme interview in which he admitted there were even lyrical differences between the mixes. god knows where though.

i'm pretty sure the track has only ever appeared on the select cassette, i just always assumed it was an early mix of the final track, with some effects in different places. i dont think its a totally different recording.

I'm still minded towards the NAD C555 that mojo pointed out, but the Goldring Gr2 or the project xpression mk2 tunrtable are both about the same price, and the goldring seem to have had a lot of good reviews... jason split with frank gironda management some time ago, im not sure if he has a manager at the mo. theres no real need, and he could probably quite easily organise that tour himself.
