Sonic Boom - Spectrum
Spiritualized - song "Lord let it rain on me"
Spacemen 3 - B-side of the single "Revolution"
Spiritualized - song "These blues" from 1995 tour.
[Spacelines] - Sonic sounds for subterraneans

but besides screwing around my vote is going for the Low compilation, best off-beat-off-beat-off.

it's the time when Peel is nevermore. who is next? i don't mean who is next going to be dust, but who is the next gravedigger of the pop-music, commercial-shit-called commercial-shit.

Spacelines would have got my vote as well, but I was limiting my choices to music released in 2004 for the first time.

I'm sure i've missed out on a lot of good releases this year, albums I haven't heard but might now get are:

Secret Machines, Nick Cave and perhaps the latest Death in Vegas.

I have to admit that I feel as if I should be 14 to listen to them. They are almost the acceptable version of a boy band but the songs are so catchy.

SHJ, Two lone swordsmen, and the sublime Venice by Fennesz. Definately agreed, superb albums. Waits and Cave too. Have to add:

Squarepusher - Ultravisitor (one of the albums of the decade!)
Stereolab - Margerine Eclipse
Gravenhurst - Flashlight Seasons & Black holes in the sand EP
Brian Wilson: Smile
The Brian Eno remasters, especially Ambient 2 & 4
Gonzales - Solo piano (Sounds like Satie is not dead at all)

And the Chris Morris Blue Jam Mp3:s. Though not technically albums, I've been listening to these very often for the past 5 months. Amazing mix of music and surreal/macabre comedy. Anything pales by comparison.

Hey the Miles Davis albums were a couple of startlingly clear bootlegs from '73 and '74... the latter being particularly funky...yet savage. Heavy electricity. I haven't heard any of his albums that sound quite like this.

Squarepusher sounds good...have to check that out.

I tried Squarepusher's "Ultravisitor," but couldn't get into it and found it mostly annoying. Does he have anything better out there anyone can recommend?

Been thinking about this...

Genuinely 2004 recordings unfortunately only rate these:
The Quarter After - Unremastered Preview album. Sublime Byrds/Beatles 60s jangly psych/pop pastiche.
Bloemfontein - The Longer Now. The last word in ambient space drone.

The Spacemen 3 show from Germany 1989 must rate, but its not exactly a 2004 recording.
Simply Saucer were new to me in 2004 - incredible stuff but from the 70s.

I haven't heard the Smile album but have it on my list. I'm sure it'd be mentioned if I had.

2004 doesn't seem the finest music vintage I guess.

I thought that the self-titled debut album from Dios Malos was particularly special. Gotta love that laid back west coast pop.

IMHO, one of the best things to come out of America since J*ff B*ckley.

Even (if anyone's heard of 'em) released a cracker of a record, their fourth long player, entitled Free Kicks, and in doing so proved that *real* rock and roll is still alive and well in the post-idol world. Check it out if you can find it.

Hm...I miss some metal on your lists, so I'll have to add the brilliant new Enslaved album, "Isa". True Norwegian Black Metal

In addition, I think Wolverhampton's finest, Ben Christophers, deserves some praise for his beautiful 'The Spaces In Between'.
He also takes the price for greatest live performance this year!

JOHNNY 'HIM AGAIN' BORRELL MUST DIE!

Post by BzaInSpace »

i forgot to mention Bloemfontein's 'The Longer Now' ... glad to see the rest of you remembered!

To me, that was the best debut album i have heard in ages, its just so much better than any number of over-hyped, musically weak pin-up 'rock n roll' bands who are flogged by an increasingly desperate music bizzzzz.

Those guys are the real deal...it's an epic, far out classic.

[... I saw the NME Albums of the year, i'm so glad they are in touch with 'the youth' : Fra** Fer****** . Yeah, right... I apologise on behalf of Scotland]

Anybody around these parts want to be in a band? Gonna get shit sorted out this year...

Speaking of forgetting...

What about the double Brian Jonestown Massacre CD compilation? Not all new stuff but an incredibly enjoyable listen without a dull moment at any point (and a tip of the hat to Mr K for leaving that at my place recently).

Its a bit of everything from early to recent and has something like 5 unreleased songs and a few live tracks. Nice booklet with it too. One of those albums you stick on and leave for the duration.

Released through Tee Pee.

They'd want to put a few unreleased songs on it, given that you can download their entire back catalogue from their website. What on earth is Anton smoking? (not that we mind, though...)
