Songs similar to Primal Scream's 'Loaded' etc.

Post by spaceout »

Hello there,

after watching the great BBC documentary about the making of Screamadelica and listening to that amazing DJ-setlist by Andrew Weatherall of the songs which inspired Screamadelica, I suddenly had to look deeper into those days and sounds.

If there's anyone here who could recommend me some more similar stuff, I would appreciate it!
I'm talking about sounds which are organic, contain lots of instruments, percussions, samples and preferably are vast in length.
Songs like Loaded, Scremadelica (from Dixie Narco EP), Trainspotting (from Vanishing Point) etc.

Hopefully you'll get the idea. I know there's a lot of electronic acts around who produce similar soundscapes but I'm looking songs that are more 'dance rock'-oriented. Something trippy, hypnotic, likable, dancable... something to get lost into or just dance to. As previously mentioned, I have heard all the songs which inspired Screamadelica, and there are some really groovy tracks in there but none of them quite have the sound that I'm looking for.

Waiting for your suggestions! Thanks in advance!

Have a listen to One Dove's 'Morning Dove White' from 1991, another Weatherall job and very good too. That album often gets compared to Screamadelica for obvious reasons, and while I'm not going to get into the same old argument about Weatherall's influences this album kind of proves what I've always believed about Screamadelica.

Agree that it's a very good album, but it's not a full Weatherall job, only about 3 tracks. Didn't they have troubles with their record company in that the album was mixed by someone else in the end? Poss Stephen Hague. Imagine what it'd have been like if Weatherall had worked his magic all over it. I've got the 12"s and saw them live a couple of times. Good shout Runce.

Wanting songs that are similar to Screamadelica is a tricky one, esp with limiting it to a dance/rock crossover thing. Erm....

I'd offer:

Hypnotone - Dreambeam - as it features Denise Johnson on vocals and was on Creation too. Great tune but more dance than rock.
Secret Knowledge - Sugar Daddy 12"
Delta Lady - Swamp Fever - the 12" features a Scream Team remix
The Aloof - check both the Sinking and Cover The Crime albums. Cover The Crime has some excellent long tracks on it.
The Sandals - We Wanna Live 12" with David Holmes remix - their 'Feet' 12 and album were pretty darn good too.
Disco Evangelists - De Niro & A New Dawn 12"s

(I'm kinda listing lengthy 12" remixes and tracks that blew my mind way back when around the Screamadelica era and afterwards. Maybe not like how Screamadelica sounds but def with the same attitude and feel of 'anything goes' and where a record becomes a trip or journey instead of just a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am type affair).

Flowered Up - Weekender (??). The original and Weatherall mixes have that 'attitude' too.

Probably not what you'd had in mind but, seeing as though it's a Spiritualized/Spacemen forum, I think I should mention Big City from Recurring. Also one of the Anyway That You Want Me remixes, forget which one, has a pronounced dance flavor to it that's pretty cool.

Also might be worth tracking down the remixes of Happy Mondays material from Bummed and Bellyaches... many of them are on the deluxe reissues of both those albums. There were probably lots of unofficial ones also with the vibe you're looking for, but I wouldn't know where to look for those.

And, there's Fools Gold, Something's Burning, and various other Stone Roses tracks/remixes that incorporate dance elements and are pretty awesome.

Well Weatherall gets full credit as producer although a couple of tracks were mixed by someone else.

More to the point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6YfHw9mqdM

One Dove- White Love Weatherall's Guitar Paradise Mix

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PO49HOEYVcU

One Dove- Breakdown Sabre's Mix(Black Squire Rides Out)

Both have Weatheralls stamp all over them.
One Dove Morning Dove White is the female singer equivalent to Screamadelica. Strictly my opinion of course.

Thank you all for wonderful hints! I'll do my best do plow through all of them tomorrow.
And just to make sure, I've heard just about everything Spiritualized has ever done so no need to link them up anymore. :)
I would've originally asked about all of this through Webadelica but right now they don't allow new members for some reason.

And I've come to realize that people here have such a great knowledge over great tunes that your answers are probably more interesting. :)

Thanks a bunch! Keep 'em coming!

Radio 4 - Dance To The Underground 12" - DFA Remix
Espiritu - Conquistador 12" - Sabres Of Paradise Mixes

......though Screamadelica is unique, a one off moment in history where the right people met likeminded souls on some perfect barrier breaking drugs. Hard to replicate.

One Dove. I know the album was delayed for about a year because of a bust up with their record company and the band were unhappy about the commercialisation of their sound. Weatheralls name is on the album as producer, agreed, but there was something amiss about it all. For the life of me I can't remember the full ins and outs but pretty sure there was a better version that never saw the light of day. Single mixes got tagged on the album too. Still a great release though and those early 12s are beauties. Saw them in a pub on a roundabout in Chelmsford way back when........Dot eh, what a lady.xx

Never heard that story. Not sure if the US version is any different than the UK but there a bunch of remixes added on at the end.
I always really liked the One Dove record. We really pushed it at my shop when it came out. They US label had the band sitting in their NYC offices and calling shops that supported the record. Our call came from none other than Dot herself. She then signed some promo only double US 12" and sent it to me. Which I still have.
Speaking of legendary instances where there was a better, never released, version. A Northern Soul.

Bit of a tangent, but Transglobal underground - Templehead is a great song, Although sadly the optimistic lyrics now sound a bit out of place 18 years later, but perhaps its just me, not the world that has turned into a pessimist.

What do you mean? Are you referring to the Northern Soul demos in circulation? Or an alternate mix, or what?

I've mentioned this a few times before.
After A Northern Soul was completed it was remixed or remastered and polished up. Apparently it is a lot more like ASIH.
And this came from both Jason and Kate as they were in my shop after opening for Siousxie. I'm sure Kate knew quite a bit.
I have the demos but I think this is something different, which I have never seen nor heard.
But I would love to.

I've got a feeling that version of ANS is a myth, or at least highly exaggerrated. the demos sound similar to the final version of the album. do you mean this 'alt version' was done after the album was already released?

I don't have a problem with the sound of the album at all. the big and full (but fairly dry) sound suits the material well.

All I can tell you is that there was a discussion about "the new Verve" record as yet unreleased with Jason and Kate. They both said the first version of ANS sounded much better or more like ASIH. They had no reason to say something untrue. And both bands were pretty close at that point as I recall.

This would be "Remix 2". And yes, it would fit right in with "Loaded" on a mix. Good call. "Remix 1" also has a heavy beat, but is more guitar driven. "Remix 3" has the same beat, but is dominated by the phaser and lots of weird pauses and tones.
