Dubstep

What the hell is it?
And why does it attract the dregs of society for a show across the street from my shop? Real bottom of the barrel white trash.
Borgone? Anyone?

Ouch! Ha ha... the same was probably said when punk rock shows first started happening.

'Dubstep' in its various forms and mutations has been mentioned around these parts for many years now. Have a read of this fairly scientific wikipedia entry on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubstep

For me it's basically just slowed-down, dark drum n' bass stuff. Heavy bass. More 'brain dance' than hi-nrg shit. It's at its best when it fully utilises the 'DUB' part, what with brainmashing proper dub effects and stuff, and ominous dread!

Hey, I'm sure Guessed or Natty will give you a better descripton... Duppy used to big it up a lot, he sent me some great compilations too. Mary Anne Hobbs has a coupla good compilation albums on it (both recommended for the curious) - John Peel (RIP) was a champion too.

What is it indeed, Alan!

For me it is the "clicks n cuts" of previous seen from a tower block rather than a chi arranged coffee house.
Dubstep as a flag-bearing title for this offers nowt and like most genre descriptions belittles the emotive content that those associated deliver.
I'm glad to say I didn't really know its history before i discovered a few of the artists associated and I also do not keep abreast of it's present or future. I purely dip in and take what is worthy.
I agree with Barry in that it's at its best when it's almost engulfing in on itself.
For me it's more an electronic/hip-hop genre than a dance culture associate but then my knowledge is limited.
However what is interesting to me is that two of my current favourite producers (Julio Bashmore & Maya Jane Coles) came to the table from that angle. They now produce tracks more akin to house (in it's various mutations) but have an inherent understanding of the subtle emotional "stabs and darts" that can transform something almost disposable into a thing of wonder.
I'm sure there could be some sort of social parrallel regarding the evolution of this type of music but none that I can offer.
I also believe that it was created/adored/destroyed in one album much in the same way that Brit-pop was with Suede.
Thing is you only see the destruction with hindsight.

I hope someone else can offer a bit more meat to this than I.

I had some of the "kids" going to the show in my shop. Most of them are the ones you have to keep an eye on.
Most of the kids into Punk here, in the 70's, had brains. These kids didn't exhibit the same intellect. By a long shot.
So maybe that is who dubstep attracts here.
The scariest crowd I have seen this side of an Insane Clown Posse show.

"Music to last a ringtone's length." I am utterly failing to see what the big fucking deal is. Anybody with a couple turntables and a full ProTools suite could turn out vomit-inducing boatloads of this stuff with a minimum of effort. Oh, and weed. You need that too...

I'll give that a listen, I've kind of lost interest in dubstep the last couple of years, there's too much landfill music coming out of the scene and I've been spending my money on proper reggae and dub to play out on my mate's soundsystem, so it would be nice to see what's going on.

Burial & Shackleton's music for me is too individual sounding and interesting to be termed "dubstep" for me, but I guess that's what it would be filed under. They're seriously good producers, the pair of them. Burial sounds like Massive Attack making UK garage.

What is interesting though, is some of the music that's mutating from dubstep. Stick this on your headphones on the way home on the night bus... it's not really rave music at all, it's a proper headtrip. Some of it's dubstep, some of it's more like UK garage, all of it's lush. I've heard it described as "future garage", whatever, I really like it. It's a mile away from your silly generic wobble stuff "ver kids" seem to dig these days.

That's a really good mix. A lot of more garage-y, 2-step and interesting stuff rather than just silly fucking wobble. Really enjoyed it. Any chance of a tracklist?

i think this yr & last has seen dubstep reach a tipping point, a saturation point..

like w most genres there are a few facets & artists that do interest me. the origins & primary influences & where they take you (mainly detroit techho) is the value i found..

did any of you see the most recent South Park? it has a great bit on dubstep running throughout the episode of kids listening to this supposed shit music & the parents getting confrontational over it, while Randy of course tries to get on board with it..
gonna burn brightly

These bits^^. Was a couple of years ago for me, TBH.

I always saw UK garage, jungle and obviously the original dub sound the origins of dubstep. The minimal techno influences and sounds permeated the music a bit later IMO, particularly the likes of Shackleton, Hessle Audio etc.

And that South Park episode is one of the better ones this season. Didn't realise they were mocking dubstep, can see how now I think about it, mind. I thought it was a general thing about generation gaps with music.

Thought I would give this thread a little bump as I kept meaning to add to it...

I have been listening to more and more electronic/bass music recently, I still probably couldn't answer the question what is dubstep but I don't worry about that, instead I have been enjoying some great new records

I think Natty's comment got it spot on, it's music for eyes down headphones on... I think it reminds me of walking through London late at night...

I like the dark edge that the music can have (not necessarily talking about dubstep here, but what is unravelling from dubstep and the music which influenced it), certainly don't want it as a ringtone though!

Anyway I put together a mix of some of the recent records I have got, including some older records Death in Vegas and Primal Scream!!
