The Anteloids - the next successful Rugby band?
I saw these guys play for the second time last night, at a bar in Rugby, and I am honestly astounded. I don't recall anybody giving me the same feeling as S3 did until now. They played 8 or 9 songs, and I think two were cover (Paperhouse by Can, and Out of my head by Wooden Shjips). Quite a few recognisable faces in the crowd too: Bassman, Jonny Mattock, Tim Morris and Craig Wagstaff of the Darkside. The same goes for the first time I saw them, which was there album launch, Pete Kember, Bassman, Tim Morris, Craig Wagstaff, Natty, Jonny Mattock, and Richard Formby were there - cant be coincidence.
I hear that they supported Spectrum early this year too, disappointed I missed out on it but hope fully they'll get something else like that. Supporting Spiritualized in Leamington maybe?
I would have to say that they are definitely a band to keep an eye on, I was planning on buying an album last night but ended up spending all my money, have to look for more chances to get one.

Perhaps, yes, but in all of the times that I have seen wooden shjips they have not played the song. Im guessing they just like it.

Just found this, a music video that went up recently from an album.

Re: The Anteloids - the next successful Rugby band?
Hello, this is Ben (from the anteloids). Thanks for the kind words.
The reason we play Outta my Head (apart from loving the song) is because Wooden Shjips never seem to play it live, plus it just works quite well as a second song.
You can hear a couple songs from the album on here: http://www.reverbnation.com/theanteloids one of which features Owen John (transparent radiation) playing violin. Dreamweaponry, do you live in Rugby? If you do want to buy an album i could just pop round. Up to you.
Look out for another video coming up soon, probably some time next week.
Cheers.

I've been listening to this album for the past couple days. Sounds good. They definitely have the 60's garage psych sound down. I was intrigued and went into their myspace...I also like 'may the circle remain unbroken' and 'cat song', which are on their page. 'Cat Song' reminds me a bit of the Golden Dawn's "Starvation".
In fact, much of their guitar sound reminds me of the Golden Dawn album.

on a few songs I can see where your coming from, but I think they have a style that hasnt been heard much before, which is very promising considering their age. late teens i think.redcloud wrote:I've been listening to this album for the past couple days. richard formby? in rugby? thats interesting. i'd have thought mr formby way too busy with wild beasts and spectrals these days.
i'd really like to see the anteloids play in rugby. the only gig i've seen in rugby in years was the recent british sea power set in the library.

Re: The Anteloids - the next successful Rugby band?
A review of the new album, by Paul Le Keux
"Despite being their sophomore album, ‘A Strange Adventure’ comes across as a record released much further forward in a bands’ catalogue.
Less apparent are the ‘tried-and-true’ psych wanderings demonstrated in earlier recordings and live appearances (don’t panic… there’s still psychedelia in there). Instead, The Anteloids explore a grittier, ‘dirty bar room’/’southern soul’ avenue which is rather unexpected, yet brave and massively satisfying. Displaying smart and punchy guitar chops reminiscent of late Velvet’s’ records and thumping STAX-esque backline rhythms, the album takes an intelligent curve through its clear literary influences. Kerouac is mentioned and even makes an appearance; not just by the art of sampling but by demonstration of intelligent prose within the bands lyrics; an art largely unheard within modern rock acts. Witty rhymes and parables are expressed through Tom Jennings’ rolling wails; bringing back memories of ‘Desire’/’Blood on the Tracks’ Dylan vocal performances.
This fresh new element of the groups sound gives the feeling that the album was composed on the road. Whereas earlier recordings held a krautrock motorik-beat notion, ‘A Strange Adventure’ feels more like a long, dusty drive between US backwater states.
As well as the swampy, beatnik R&B vibes, there’s still satisfying hits of those wonderful CAN/NEU!-like instrumental schmoozings the band deliver so confidently on the stage (they always seemed improvised, yet they sound identical here on the album… how’d they do that?!?). Elements of folk which were brilliantly executed on the first album are explored again here with ‘Elephant Shoes’. Lush 12-string acoustic backs up twangy electric licks to deliver a ditty not a million miles away from Pentangle or Incredible String Band material.
These factors aside, ‘Feel It Roll’ is a law unto itself and takes us on a six-and-a-half minute, head-bobbing military march rock-journey… A Strange Adventure indeed.
By venturing down this new avenue one might think that The Anteloids have taken a risk here, but it probably never entered their heads that they were doing anything strange or discriminating. Fans might think otherwise though as their earlier material (brilliant as it was) fitted in between the countless numbers of ‘Black-Angels-by-numbers’ bands they shared stages with. Swampy, beat poet R&B might not find its place in the hearts of punters who’ve turned up to see BJM-inspired-band No. 8.2. Not to say that The Anteloids have completely broken down boundaries with this great new album, but the fickle, fad-based ears and eyes that scan the seas of rock n’ roll don’t often take changes in format too well.
Oh well, if all else fails then The Anteloids should remember the words of Gustav Klimt; "If you cannot please everyone with your deeds and your art, please a few. To please many is bad."
I’m one of the few."

Re: The Anteloids - the next successful Rugby band?
I have had it playing for a few days now. It's an excellent record and I am really enjoying it. There isn't a duff track on this album. A little of the same feel as the debut but they have embraced that indie motorcycle rock style and thrown out a couple of really superb rockers - Hideous Skin has one of the best riffs I've heard for a while that even harks back to a bit of the 70s glam era.steve-o wrote:anyone got their new one yet? previews on their site sound good but im guessing they put the best bits

A few more laid back numbers too including an almost soft rock Ta Voix which closes the album - gentle sounds are then dragged into guitar distortion land for a work out. The vocals are pushed into the mix a little harder on this album and the guitar playing is fantastic throughout, in fact all the musicians sound great - I have no idea of the names of these guys if I'm honest. The unexpected pop gem of Can't Shake It is just irresistible and has a fabulous little guitar lick and solo.
I'm classifying this as a 2013 album as it came out so late last year. Early days but a contender for my album of the year already. Seems like Rugby still has gems to be found music-wise - this has moved away from the more Spacemen influenced material previously released and the band seem to have found their own level. I wish they'd come and play locally!
Highly recommended. The sleeve kind of reminds me of Lazer Guided Melodies too.

I really like both the new album and the debut. Can't you guys come north and play in Leeds? Double bill with Hookworms at Wharf Chambers would be ideal.
Fun video for Can't Shake It by the way - I can see that being ther 'song of the day' on the Dock Ellis Facebook page soon enough!

Re: The Anteloids - the next successful Rugby band?
Hi guys,
The new album is now available at http://www.theanteloids.co.uk/ - there's some samples on there so you can get a flavour.
Would hugely appreciate your support in picking up a copy. This is a limited independent release so try and support it if you can. It's not easy being a band!
Thanks

Excellent - ordered. Liked all the previous stuff and the snippets here sounded nice.
I take it there's no vinyl of this? If not you can make me happy by coming north and playing in Leeds sometime soon please!

I'm on my third play of this now and its great stuff. Couldn't get no higher parts 1 and 2 and the last track the magic of streetside are currently standing out as favourites.
Well worth a go if anyone's wavering.
