New Music Recommendations

Post by RoboHobo »

My dear old mum got me some Amazon vouchers for my recent birthday, it's brilliant, like I'm thirteen again. I've already bought the Alien Quadrilogy box set on Blu-Ray for a bargin of £13.99 but now I need some music, and I'd like something new, for my mind to be Spiritualized, so to speak. Can anyone recommend me something please?

I would really appreciate it if I could use your excellent music taste to point me in a new direction. Thanks to this place I got into The Heads, Black Angels and Warlocks, but I'm open to suggestions from any genre. In fact, that's what I'm really looking for.

To (hopefully) make it interesting for everyone else, I'll give something back in the form of a review of each album I buy.

I've got about £30 to spend so I reckon I can choose three of the albums. To set a cut off point, I'll make that choice from the first ten that are posted. I'll make the choice purely based on the words in this thread. Once I've listened to them I'll post a little review of each lovely new album.

So, go for it forum, I know you will astound me.

Thanks in advance.

Here are a few of my favorite records of the year:

Gruff Rhys - Hotel Shampoo: undeniable psych-pop masterpiece. Every song is excellent. Hopefully you are already familiar with Super Furry Animals and, if so, you should have an idea of how good these songs are.

Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will: This is a divisive album amongst Mogwai fans. I love it. There are lots of interesting twists and turns that find the band exploring territory they never before have tread upon. A massive slab of awesome.

White Hills: H-p1: W.H. are one of the absolute best of the heavy psych-rock bands around. I love them because they pack such a variety of material on their records, especially here and on their previous self-titled release. You'll find monstrous, pillaging rock songs, krautrock grooves, ambient/drone pieces and guitar insanity within.

Nice thread RH...

Among a few others I'll shout:

W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) Pharoahe Monch: Nothing like the Heads or the Warlocks or the Black Angels and certainly not much like most other hip hop that sadly this record probably gets lumped in with: in reality it's a mad psychedelic affair, a strange and awe-inspiring mixture of future-conspiracy-theories, cutting edge production and one of the best rappers in the world. Pharoahe's masterfully erudite vocals and clever use of metaphors and wordplay require several listens just to grasp a lot of what is being said - it's not all superdense headfuckness though, as on his previous albums there's a cunning pop undertow. I probably still prefer Desire from 2007 (easily the best album from that year for me) but only as I've not been able to give the new one that length of listening pleasure.
Highly fucking recommended!

The Wants by the Phantom Band - twisted Wickerman-esque psyche-folk-shanties played in a razor-sharp metal-meets-krautrock style, and sung by a scary man with a beard channeling the spectres of Nick Cave, Will Oldham and David Lynch. Dwells on the 'twisted heart of important things' . They perhaps meet somewhere in between The Screaming Trees and Arab Strap but really sound like neither. The second song on this record has a Lady GaGa style beat and is one of the great pop songs you never heard. They are really nice guys and are based in Glasgow so that's cool as well.

PJ Harvey's latest is called Let England Shake, it's terrific, even though it won the Mercury Music Prize... fair enough though.
Bit more of a late night/early morning vibe this time. War and The Autoharp. I love her music and I really dig this one.

... how about a new but old album? Recently dug out Courtesy of Choice by Leila (2000) and it's still amazing and light years away from most other stuff... even today. Bizarre and psychedelic, but not in an obvious way. Theres pointers to all sorts on here (Prince, Staple Singers, Soft Cell, Al Green, etc etc) but it never really appropriates anyone else's sound - it seems to exist in its own strange place. Her first record was on Richard D. James' imprint but it bears no relation to him or any other Warp people either. A curious kind of dusty lo-fi-ness somehow enhances these amazing tunes as opposed to being reductive. She also has three amazing singers (close friends & relatives) featured here like on her previous record - astonishing.

Thanks for the replies so far. There are already some mouthwatering choices. If this keeps up I'm going to have to spend a bit more cash. Yes, Bza. Good idea. Let's open it up to albums from any time, not just newly released ones.

I've already got the PJ Harvey one and the Mogwai one. I love Let England Shake but am still undecided on Hardcore Will Never Die. Mexican Grand Prix was fantastic live though.

Thanks for the replies. Some brilliant suggestions. I listened to previews and the links provided and decided I had to go over budget. Have ordered these:

CAVE: Neverendless
White Hills: H-p1
Pharoahe Monch: W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)
Leila: Courtesy of Choice
Woods: Sun & Shade

Kurt Vile and Gruff Ryhs are going to be ordred next month. Kurt Vile is getting a lot of play on BBC 6 Music at the moment and does seem perfect for these Autumnal days. I'll probably weaken and buy this one too this weekend.

So, hopefully a wide range of music there. I'll post a review of each when the music drops. CAVE and White Hills are obviously well known around here but I'll give my tuppence worth anyway.

Cheers all,
RH

I like the new Kurt Vile album, too. It's probably the best thing he's released. Definitely let us know what you think after you receive your purchase.

I've just discovered these dudes and think they’re pretty cool. Nothing new, but nice nonetheless:

On the other end of the scale there’s Bob Log III:

(If you don’t know him already, check out his tracks on MySpace and then take a look at videos of him on Youtube. I couldn’t believe it when I first saw the videos.)

.
I found a CD called Checkmate Savage by The Phantom Band today for the princely sum of $1. Its blasting out of my speakers right now. And its very G O O D.
Also picked up Darker Circles by The Sadies for $1 which is good as well.
Gotta love these specialist smooth jazz and r&b shops that could care less about anything remotely rock.
