new ian mcculloch solo record and auto bio

Post by bunnyben »

Hi Guys,

Great news, Mac's almost finished recording his
brand new solo record, the first one in nearly a decade.

It's called "Alimony" and according to Mac it's the best thing since Candleland.

The album also comes part of a special 3 CD set, including Mac's
moving performance at the Liverpool Cathedral last January, featuring
a number of Bunnymen Classics, Covers of Mac's favourite
Artists, and a selection of solo songs.
Also included is an Audiobook of the forthcoming Autobiography
"Silverfish- From Eric's to the Echo Arena"

The Album will be released in May 2012, to coincide
with Mac's birthday. Don't miss out on this treat.

Cheers,

Ha! I rather thought that! Candleland was too soft for me.

I'll have to dig my copy of this out. I haven't listened to it in many years and remember thinking it was a bit pipe-and-slippers for my tastes when it came out - bit like Mac trying to do a Perry Como record, really.

My initial reaction to reading about "Candleland" after all this time was "Isn't that the record with a decent single and a track with Liz Cocteau and bugger all else of note?". I'm suspicious that the single and the track with LizFrazier are the same song, but can't check until tomorrow.

That rather sums it up for me - and they are the same track. Except that it's not that amazing, just OK. 2 of the great British singers on one record isn't enough it seems.

Seem to remember enjoying it at the time ,a quick listen/flick through on Spotify ,confirms 3 or 4 good tracks ,-if you like Macca/the Bunnymen that is - and thats it ,but I`m afraid my patience with McCulloch ran out about a decade ago, dragged along to one to many Bunnymen shows ,recently read a review of a particularly embarrassing night that they treated Glasgow to,http://thequietus.com/articles/07092-ec ... drunk-live

The Bunnymen are far edgier than Mac's solo album. You can find lots of psychedelic moments and Will's guitar soars so much of the time - he's massively underrated. I don't get that from Candleland, but admittedly that is my only solo record - one was enough for me.

I am a huge Bunnymen fan. I listened to Candleland back when it came out. It seems it was something Mac "had" to do. A la Mick Jagger. Had to see if he could fly on his own. I thought it was bland and boring.
So trumpeting the new solo record as the best thing since Candleland seems an odd way to sell the record.
I own nothing since the last self titled "Grey" record. Just keepin' the records I will actually play.

I loved Candleland. Admittedly, it's not as edgy (?!!) as some of the Bunnymen's other stuff but it's still a brilliant album. (IMHO.) This next one sounds fantastic (the three-disc deal and so forth.) I can't wait!!!

What's wrong with 'edgy'? It's crucial to a lot of the Bunnymen's music. I just find Mac's solo stuff dull.

I've seen the Bunnymen twice in recent years, one time they were absolutely fantastic, and the other time so dull and Mac looked like he couldnt be arsed. it was such a contrast.
evidently his voice is pretty much shot now too.

only heard bits and pieces of the post-reformation stuff but I really like all the 80s albums, all apart from Crocodiles which I find really basic and scrappy

Spot on!
Crocodiles is far too Doors-y for me.
I rate Bunnymen Lps in the following order:
1. Porcupine.
2. Heaven Up Here.
3. Ocean Rain
4. The Grey One
5. Crocodiles.
To me these are the only ones that count. I have nothing else.
Bring On The.......onslaught.

One of the first singles I ever bought was The Back of Love and I became a big Bunnymen fan up to Bring on the Dancing Horses which I have to say I never much cared for (although I know of at least a couple of regulars here who rate this highly).

I am always surprised at the regular thumbs down Crocodiles gets, that’s the only Bunnymen album I listen to anymore.

I saw Ian McCulloch at the National in Kilburn in 88ish and never bothered with his solo album, I did like September song from a few years before though.

I am/was a huge fan of the original Bunnymen. The gigs they played and the SFX in Dublin in 1984 and particularly in 1985 were unbelievable. Totally agree with Runcibles comments about the psychedelic aspects of their music. The guitar solo on live takes of "No Dark Things" was stunning. For me, they never recovered from the loss of Pete De Freitas, one of the best drummers I have ever seen. I saw them play at the RAH in 1987 (I think) with Blair Cunningham (ex-Haircut 100) on drums after Pete had left - they sucked. Even after Pete's return the edge had gone, and sadly after his death things didn't get much better. I've seen the post-Pete (and post-Les) Bunnymen a couple of times - they were really boring one night in Melbourne. My near-rule about not going to reunion gigs is largely a result of the Bunnymen's gig in Melbourne.....

As much as I try to keep up with new bands, most of which I hear about on this message board, I am a sucker for those deluxe reissues.
I am working my way thru Teardrop Explodes- Kilimanjaro. I cant help think how polar opposite the careers of Julian Cope and Mac turned out.
Julian Cope flourished after the Teardrops. Mac seems to only be able to really cut it with the Bunnymen. I never sold much of Candleland. There was virtually no push and no buzz over here for that record. Conversely, Bunnymen tours were the biggest, most anticipated tours of any of the bands we sold in my shop thru the mid 80's. I used to go all over to see them. Chicago, New York, Toronto and of course Detroit.
Never saw the Teardrops. A major regret but they only played Detroit once. I have seen Julian Cope twice.
My point is this. Two guys who were friends and started out together had careers that took almost opposite paths.
This is a stream of consciousness post while listening to the Teardrop Explodes.

I reckon the autobiography will be more engaging than the record. I'd buy that but as i passed on the last solo record i don't think i'll be pledging anything for this one.

That: "The best album since..." line is the standard Mac blurb
as you will find at 2:40 in this clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYOj582sIBU
from around the time of the first solo lp. He says it all the time. I'm sure i could find more examples but i have let my bunnyology slip recently - i say recently... since 1998 when i think about it.

I played Blue Blue Ocean and All My Life the other day. Love those two tracks, they would have sat well in the recent sets with strings at the Ocean Rain gigs.

Maybe this will help Ian Bunnyman fund his new lp. One of the first ads from last nights Super Bowl.
