Mazzy Star to release new album in 2012

Post by bunnyben »

Mazzy Star have revealed that they will be releasing an album of new material and also touring in 2012.

Following the recent release of their AA side comeback single, the Californian band, made up of Hope Sandoval and David Roback, will perform a host of live shows early next year before releasing what will be their fourth album. No official release date for the record has been announced.

The duo released their new single ‘Common Burn’/‘Lay Myself Down’ at the beginning of this week (October 31).

Mazzy Star put out their debut album, ‘She Hangs Brightly’ in 1990, following it with ‘So Tonight That I Might See’ in 1993, which contained the single ‘Fade Into You’. They released their last album, ‘Among My Swan’, 15 years ago in 1996.

Hope Sandoval has released two albums as Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions – 2001’s ‘Bavarian Fruit Bread’ and 2009’s ‘Through The Devil Softly’. She played the Matt Groening curated edition of All Tomorrow’s Parties in Minehead last year.

now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie

This is great news. I too am stunned but also very excited. They were one of my very favorites in the 90's. I was blown away when I first heard "She Hangs Brightly". I really liked Opal but Mazzy went straight to my heart. Much of that was the combination of Roback's fluid guitar playing mixed with the sweetest, yet, most haunting voice I have ever heard.

I've looked for this new single release at four different decent record stores but it seems the physical copy may have been released in the UK only. Is this true?

Apparently today (Black Friday) is "Record Store Day" pt. 2. I'm tempted to stop by a couple dependable record stores to see if they have it in for today but I'm not prepared to pay out the wazoo for an imported 7".

'Dostoevsky's dead,' said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently.

Anyone who loves Mazzy Star should check out Speck Mountain (if they haven't done already).

One comment on the clip below describes them as Mazzy Star meets Spacemen 3 .. hmm not sure about that, but they definitely got the woozy mellow country spirit of Mazzy.

Yup - SM have been lauded on these very pages more than once. I Feel Eternal is pretty superb.

Speck Mountain have been playing shows around Chicago recently. I haven't had a chance to see them, but I think they are gearing up to release a new album.

I happened upon some interesting information on the mazzystar.nu forum today. Here is the Feb. 27, 2013 post:
homeostasis wrote:New Album Track Listing!
A bunch of new song titles written by Hope Sandoval and David Roback have very recently been registered with Hope and David's publishing company, BMI. These are definitely legit song titles from Mazzy Star. The question is: why would Hope and David suddenly copyright these 10 songs, 4 of which we already assumed would appear on the album? The only possible answer is... Album Track Listing! YAY!

In the order they were registered:
Common Burn
Lay Myself Down
Flying Low
Spoon
Kingdom
California
I've Got To Stop
Does Someone *
Seasons Of Your Day
Sparrow

* "Does someone... have your baby now." BLUES

Things are definitely happening now people!
