Spiritualized® - Greatest Hits (1990 - 2008) BZA Selection

Post by BzaInSpace »

OK - something for the weekend.

Not so long ago the Mrs asked me to make up a Spiritualized® comp for her pal - she had heard them but didn't have much of their stuff - she was thrilled at us going down to see them at the RAH and would have gone if wasn't for work etc.

With this vaguest of briefs I set to work - how can I possibly condense this music that I love onto 1 single disc?

Well the answer is, of course, I can't. I tried but it just didn't work, I had to leave out too much amazing music.

So, I set myself two standard 80min discs, and Let It Flow in chronological order, and apart from one evolutionary (IMO) track I avoided the live records and bootlegs.

There were many dilemmas - not least the choice of the final track or 'Borrowed Your Gun'? Can it really not include 'Cop Shoot Cop...'? Maybe it should start with 'Hypnotized'? Surely no compilation can be complete without the always-awesome live 'Shine A Light' segue? And what about the Acoustic Mainlines stuff as it was so good? I also have to neglect the remixes and stuff, like the awesome 'Walking On Thin Ice'....

In the end, whilst going for the a lot of populist-but-totally-amazing choices I also picked some stuff that to me really worked the "Highest of the highs and lowest of the lows...". Needless to say that in a years time - or even 6 months :D I'm certain this would be a very different selection...

So...what do you think? And what would be YOUR selection?

Works Vol. 1 (1990 - 1996) [78.20]

Anyway That You Want Me
Feel So Sad (Rhapsodies)
Run (Single Version)
You Know It's True
Take Your Time
Shine A Light
200 Bars
Take Good Care Of It (Fucked Up Inside)
Medication
The Slide Song
Let It Flow
Lay Back In The Sun (Single Version)
Stay With Me

Works Vol. 2 (1997 - 2008) [79.27]

Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space (Can't Help Falling In Love)
Come Together
I Think I'm In Love
Electricity
Cool Waves (String Session)
On Fire
Do It All Over Again
Don't Just Do Something
The Twelve Steps
Stop Your Crying
Going Down Slow
She Kissed Me (It Felt Like A Hit)
Lay It Down Slow
Harmony (Mellotron)
Sweet Talk
Baby I'm Just A Fool
The Waves Crash In

PS - Sorta makes me glad there is no official "Greatest Hits" record out there (although if any band is deserving of that title it's gotta be Spiritualized®!!!) as to narrow those records down to one disc would inevitably be disappointing due to so much being left out.

That's a great selection Ben - dunno about splitting the Royal Albert Hall 10 October 1997 tracks 'Intro' and 'Shine A Light' though? Unless you are into maximum anticipation and stuff?

'Don't Hold Me Close' - yeah mate. Another one that should be up there. Beautiful.

I'm not by my itunes to see the length of songs so I can't offer a list right now, but I think a big reason that there hasn't been a greatest hits on 1 or 2 CDs is that the birth of Spiritualized really happened way back in Spacemen 3 days, and anything without a handful of those tracks would be inherently incomplete.

I'd think there could be a 3 disc anthology, perhaps starting with Walking With Jesus or Things'll Never Be The Same. You'd need something from Playing With Fire too, before Hypnotized (essential in my opinion) and launching into the kind of thing you did.

I dunno - Spacemen 3 deserve their own anthology so for this compilation I would include 'Hypnotized' as an intro track... or not at all. Anything else I think is strictly Spacemen 3 and should remain that way.
I would rather include the Let It Come Down take of 'Lord Can You Hear Me' than the Playing With Fire version anyway (and please, don't post just to argue this point as it has been thrashed out ad infitum - and you're wrong as well)

If there were a third disc (and why not?) for this comp it ought to be the best of the live recordings - which for me would be harder to narrow down really - although if I were to pick any take of 'Walking With Jesus' I would choose one from the last tour - specifically Glasgow 2008. That beats everything really.

Great choice, Barry. You can't really fault this selection, and as you say it's a tough call leaving some tracks off. In fact, I'd argue it's harder choosing what doesn't go on, rather than what actually is included..

Personally, I need All of my Tears (though the argument 'it's a S3 song' is valid), Anything More, Cheapster and Don't Hold me Close. Also prefer the LGM version of Run, and the non-Elvis version of LAG.... Of your selection, I'd sacrifice Lay Back in the Sun, Twelve Steps and some A + E tracks to put my stuff on. But that's pretty much it, the rest is a fantastic introduction to Spiritualized. Kudos. Moreover, imagine being the lucky person to experience all this music for the first time?

I tried to get my friend into the band and tried not to hit her with too much heavy stuff to break her in. But with Spiritualized that's like castration, isn't it? I ended up putting some of the noisier stuff on too, just to fairly represent the music as best as I could.

I made a progressive list in which I begin with Wild Jason then move on to Soul Searching Jason and finally end with Gentle Jason. I don't have these all on iTunes and I decided to add in the new material as well, so I'm not sure how much would fit on one disc. For me I prefer Gentle Jason, but to get a fuller picture of Spiritualized I added the first two parts. Spiritualized may be more schizophrenic than progressive, however I think Songs in A and E and especially the new material are moving towards love and away from the demons of the past, "Kill all my demons and that would be fine." So here's the list:

1. Lord Let it Rain On Me
2. Let it Flow
3. Electricity
4. This Little Life of Mine
5. Come Together
6. Twelve Steps
7. Slide Song
8. Sway
9. Walking With Jesus
10. Lord Can You Hear Me When I Call?
11. Jesus Won't You
12. Shine A Light
13. Jane
14. Run
15. Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
16. Too Late
17. Oh Baby
18. Stop Your Crying
19. Hey Little Girl
20. Lay it Down Slow
21. Cool Waves
22. Poppy, So Long

this is really tricky, I made a compilation to try and convert a mate once but it was pre A&E so it's even harder now.
also did one for a mate whose music tastes are fairly conservative so included a lot of the softer and more orchestrated material.
(neither compilation worked by the way)

it does seem strange to say that a band that have only done 6 albums are in need of a multi-disc treatment, but it's so difficult to cover the bands various sounds. also doesn't help that a lot of songs are quite long. here's my crack at it anyway

I've left out live material, I think a live comp would be a different beast and would probably have to be a Dylan-esque bootleg series with full shows representing each era.

Anyway That You Want Me (edit)
I Want You (single ver)
Step Into The Breeze
Angel Sigh
Lay Back In The Sun (EP version)
The Slide Song
Let It Flow
Ladies and gentlemen (Elvis mix)
Come Together (Abbey Road)
Electricity
Broken Heart (Abbey Road)
No God Only Religion
Don't Just Do Something
Stop Your Crying (radio edit)
Anything More
Cheapster
Rated X
Sweet Talk
Death Take Your Fiddle
You Lie You Cheat

for fun I've restricted myself to one disc. not checked if it even fits on there (probably not)

I've gone for variety mostly- rockers, free jazz, ballads, etc showing the bands range. as it's an introduction mainly gone for single edits too.

I'd say only a couple of my choices are a bit leftfield (Step into the Breeze, Don't Just Do Something) and these are personal faves of mine.

if the new songs counted Hey Jane would be STRAIGHT on there, closely followed by Heading For The Top and maybe Get What You Deserve.

painful exclusions: Shine A Light, I Think Im In Love... Sitting On Fire is also one of my favourite Spz songs but i much prefer the acoustic mainlines version so that would wait for the live compilation(s)

OK, I did a 2 disc comp that includes some Spacemen. As I mentioned above, I just don't think Spiritualized can be represented or understood without at least a taste of the original.

Hey Man
Walking With Jesus [Demo]
Hypnotized
Anyway That You Want Me
These Blues [Demo]
Feel So Sad [7" single version]
Run [Single Version]
Step Into The Breeze
I Want You
Smiles
Shine A Light
Angel Sigh
Sway
Medication
Let It Flow

---

Take Good Care Of It [Live, F-d Up Inside]
All of My Tears
Lay Back In The Sun [Electric Mainline EP]
Ladies & Gents [Elvis Version]
Come Together [Abbey Road EP]
I Think I'm In Love
Electricity
Broken Heart [Abbey Road EP]
Stop Your Crying
Anything More
Lord Can You Hear Me
Ballad of Richie Lee
Lord Let It Rain On Me
Cheapster
Soul on Fire
Yeah Yeah
Baby I'm Just A Fool
Don't Hold Me Close

I'm going on a road trip in a week and I thought I should try to explain Spiritualized to some people who have never heard them, since I'm such a big fan. However I'm a little worried they'll beat me up and leave me by the side of the road if Spiritualized isn't their cup of tea. That's why I'm still not sure if I'll go through with this. If I do it will be a 2 disc compilation of Spiritualized that would take them from LGM to SH, SL with what I think are the most essential songs to describe Spiritualized. I know this is only supposed to go through 2008, but it wouldn't be complete without the new material. This is different than what I would put on a personal favorites disc, because my goal in this effort is to give a well rounded picture of Spiritualized.

Disc 1
Run
Take Your Time
Sway
Slide Song
Let it Flow
Lay Back in the Sun
Shine a Light
Walking With Jesus
LAGWAFIS
Come Together
Cool Waves
Don't Just Do Something
The Twelve Steps
The Straight and the Narrow
Lord Can You Hear Me When I Call

Disc 2
This Little Life of Mine
Hold On
Lord Let it Rain On Me
The Ballad of Richie Lee
Cheapster
I Gotta Fire
Don't Hold Me Close
Borrowed Your Gun
Hey Jane
Freedom
I Am What I Am
Poppy, So Long
Oh Happy Day

I just realized I want to add three more songs: Medication between Sway and Slide Song, then Stop Your Crying between The Straight and the Narrow and Lord Can You Hear Me When I Call on the first disc and You Lie, You Cheat between I Gotta Fire and Don't Hold Me Close on the second disc. Now I think it's complete. :)

Agreed. It was on my list, and is a true essential in my opinion.
