Ouch. Even reading this is painful! I thought Amnesty International was founded to stop human suffering!

As an aside, I've liked Raphael Saddiq's album 'Stone Rollin'' this year.

I remember on Family Guy when Meg gets a boyfriend and he buys here a Maroon 5 cd. She says how did you know I like them? He replies "you said you had terrible taste in music"....

maybe they need to cut down the 4 cds worth of **** to just one of okish ****?

Ouch. Bring out the usual suspects. All it's missing is Phil Collins and Dire Straits and it would be almost as if the last 2 decades had never happened. Bob's music deserves much better than this.

dylan wanted pavarotti on the hank williams album but had to be 'reminded' that he's not a song writer

What a load of music snobbery.

Sad...It's a charity album, for a pretty amazing cause... gimme a break.

Another way of looking at it is - perhaps this again shows just how outstanding a songwriter Dylan is when such a varied cross-section of musicians (and that) are able to go somewhere with one of his songs. Over the decades the literally thousands of artists who've covered him are diverse to say the least - sure, much of this won't be for me but I bet there's some ace stuff as well - Patti Smith, Bettye Lavette, Steve Earle, Band of Skulls, Ke$ha  and the Kronos Quartet... as well as the fucking Queens of the Stone Age!

The reaction to this album also strikes me as something that Dylan would probably enjoy, seeing the Dylanophiles quivering in outrage. Again.

Lastly, I believe this album has the edge on the I'm Not There soundtrack (which for me is only really essential for the inclusion of the beautiful title track by the man himself):

Highly recommended - Solomon Burke doing 'Maggie's Farm' will be familiar out there to those who know me best.

BZA, Im with you on getting the dylan fans riled up. I think Dylan gets a bit of a kick out it too. Plus, and I'm always exited to hear what QOTSA record, they are a great band! Same goes for Patti Smith and Bettye Lavette. But, by the same token I'd go mental If someone as talentless and vacuous as Mick Hucknall covered any of SPZ tunes. As I said earlier in the thread, cut it down to a single, or at most a double album of really diverse quality artists and it would make for a great album, and as a result would probably make more for the charity.

obviously   i didn't like the 'i'm not there' ost. as a general rule i'm not a fan of covers. it's rare that they supersede the original

i'm sure there will be a few gems in there, but can't see it measuring up to I'm Not There. just looking at the tracklist a lot of it is pure MOR artists (not a judgement, just a fact)

although I do enjoy a fair amount of Dylan covers, I've never understood the (very common) viewpoint that other people do his songs better. I find his voice and presence unique and mesmerising a lot of the time. but a lot of people just can't get on with his voice. weird.

Even that one is a real mixed bag. There are some indie MOR people on the tracklist -- the versions of Dark Eyes and When The Ship Comes In (I hate that kid, he's so precious) are particularly bad on I'm Not There, which was probably unavoidable since the movie was so awful.

I am as appalled as you all about some of the obvious low points of this comp, but I bet some of it will be OK. Some of this is about young flashes in the pan trying to gain a bit of cred by covering Dylan for human rights, man! If they'd been more selective and cut it down to 2 discs, I bet it would be almost as good as I'm Not There, which did have some real highlights.
