What aren't we talking about

Post by JakeCardigan »

Inspired by BZA's spot on comment in the UH thread I thought I would try and spur our thoughts to something a bit different... and also echo some other comments about the value of this board for recommendations.

So this thread is to recommend some albums/eps/singles/live recordings of music we love but never seem to get mentioned on here or only briefly.....

So I would recommend and direct people to:

Nathanial Mayer - Why don't you give it to me?
Quasimoto - The Unseen
Religious Knives - The Door
MV/EE - the live albums released by Heroine Celestial Agriculture... I am a big fan of MV/EE but definitely sway to the more plugged in incarnations of the band, particularly when they get into their groove and the recordings have a bite
King Midas Sound - Cool Out EP - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_BSIv1wwF8
The Gaslamp Killer - We Make it Good mix - http://wemakeitgood.com/mix-series/shil ... amp-killer and the amazing song "when i'm in awe" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFp4eidLRPo

Came across both of these recently and was able to pick them up on record on eBay

okay, here are a couple of albums that I think have been mentioned before on here. but not enough

The Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters (2007)

one of the best debut albums for many years in my opinion. proper songs, earnest, almost folky,
on top of that layers of rippling MBV guitar, as well as stuff like pump organ, accordian.. basically it's a perfect mixture of tunes and noise.
the song titles are wonderfully evocative, almost like 'chapter headings' in a book (And She Would Darken The Memory, That Summer At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy..) and I love the fact that the singer doesn't hide his gorgeous scottish accent when singing.

I saw these guys support Idlewild (I used to be a big fan of those guys and go and see them for nostagia mainly!) and they totally blew them off stage. it was earsplittingly loud for one thing. instead of trying to replicate the layers of the album they just cranked the guitar up to insane proportions, giving it a different spin.

I can't recommend the album enough. you either won't get it, or you'll love it.

The Walkmen - You & Me (2008)

these guys have been bubbling under for a while. they are semi well known for a song called The Rat which was more of a fast Strokes-y thing, but that's not representative of this album at all.
hard to think of reference points, but shades of latter Bob Dylan, The National, maybe Calexico in the border town/travel feel. maybe some Television in there.
its all crisp, lightly reverbed guitar, clickety-clack production, occasional horns, and the singing is all passionate and vein-bulging :)
I really love the production on this album, its perfect. it's basically an indie-rock record, nothing ground breaking. but its just a cut above everything else, pure class.
check out the songs In The New Year (for a faster one) or Red Moon (gorgeous ballad)

that's my favourite walkmen album. i like the wintery/holiday season feel. plus they are able to nail this really great world-weariness like no one else right now. i read that they were listening to a lot of roy orbison when they were making it, which explains a lot. obviously you've seen them live (it's a little scary- it seems that neck vein could burst any minute).

Thanks for making this thread.

Mean Red Spiders — Stars & Sons

Canadian shoegaze band from Toronto. Lot's of tremolo and lovely female voice.

Acid Mt. Fuji — Susumu Yokota

Early 90's Detroit style acid with a Japanese twitch.

Best,

Mark
Design.

yea this is great, tho it's a couple of years old now
(tho obv not as old as The Village of Love)
there's a great detroit dirge-y groove to WDYGITM? obv due to the players on that record. but NM's voice is still the star of the show. lascivious but also otherworldly, it's a heart-stopping ass-shaking concoction.
brilliant album.
gonna burn brightly

oh yeah, well the only other one i've got is Lisbon which just seems like a weaker version of You & I. the songs aren't quite as good and neither is the production.

never actually seen them live, just watched clips on youtube. next time they tour near me, I'm on it!

you're right about the world weariness.. the whole album just has a particular atmosphere that it maintains throughout and binds it all together. sign of a good record.

saw the former supporting micah p hinson (who i saw supporting richard hawley and had a nice convo with m about how great hawley is) they were ok but i never got round to listening to the album and the walkman- i had bows and arrows (the rat) but never listened past there. i had some more albums but i think i lost them.

incidently how great are hawley and hinson? :D

pawn hearts is one of my favourite records.. here´s man-erg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2K1mUSN-tI

here is part of their second attempt ever at playing a plague of lighthouse keepers live..they rehearsed it once earlier that day:

saw them at a festival i worked at. same their name in the program and went around to everyone else working with me going 'how can a band with this name not be great?' i expected a choir- i got three guys looking like they'd just come down from the rockies (not the boxer films) with great big boots and dirty beards. and the banter 'this is a banjo song, i tuned my guitar to sound like a banjo cos it's cheaper' is wonderful. i'll try to dig out a record of theirs n upload it here
