best neil young album

Post by bunnyben »

harvest moon- delicate and beautiful. feels like mr young is sat in the room bathed in moonlight singing, not to you, but next to you as you try not too but cannot help peeking into his private world swimming in a puddle
'raging and weeping are left on the early road
now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie
of soaring crosses and poisened thorns'

I will also vote for On The Beach. "Revolution Blues" is one of my favorite songs ever, but the whole album is a masterpiece.

i'm gonna vote for ... both harvest and on the beach. love them both too much to decide between them. (i'm ignoring 'are you ready for the country' though)

Probably Tonight's The Night with On The Beach second and Zuma third. I really love Zuma.

I don't have a copy (CD/vinyl) of Harvest Moon, used to have a cassette copy in the early 90s but lost it. Some of the lyrics on Unknown Legend are awful but there were tracks on it that I liked too. Must give it another go I suppose.

Everybody Know this Is Nowhere
Zuma
Tonights The Night
On The Beach
After The Goldrush

There's my top five. No way I could nail it down to one.

Tough one... really tough one. The guys back catalogue is equally vast and amazing...
Where do you start? Doubt I could give you just the one album, these are probably listened to the most though:

Time Fades Away
Tonight's The Night
Live at the Fillmore East with Crazy Horse 1970
Trans
Dead Man OST
On The Beach
Broken Arrow
After The Goldrush
Eldorado EP
Dead Man OST
Sleeps With Angels...

I love, love, love Le Noise as well.

... but the one I've probably played more than any other (and was my introduction to the mad world of NY) is
Mirrorball - an absolute classic and probably my favourite, and never fails with the 'pure spinal rush'. So guess I'll choose that one.

Honourary mention for Decade though - picking one album is way too hard, so as compilations go, that one takes some beating...

dead man is good but does it need mentioning twice?

In terms of album from start to finish...'Everybody Knows This is Nowhere' gets my vote.

But, Side 2 of 'On The Beach' is hands down one of the greatest sides of music ever recorded. EVER.

yeah it's a great comp isn't it. the first NY album I bought. still some awesome songs on there that are hard to get elsewhere like Sugar Mountain, Campaigner and Winterlong

my top 5 in order from best downwards:

Rust Never Sleeps
On The Beach
Harvest Moon (yes I prefer it to Harvest- just!)
Harvest
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

will say that even some of his better albums are patchy, or have some filler on there..I find Tonights the Night a bit of a dirgefest myself

Yep. For me, it doesn't get mentioned enough in regards to the cream of NY's discography.

And yeah. I love Decade - right down to the awful cover and NY's handwritten sleevenotes - I'm sure they were difficult to read anyway but once they're shrunk to fit a cd case it becomes extra challenging!

I think Spzretent hit the nail on the head with those 5, though I am particularly partial to Ragged Glory as well as that and the live album, Weld, were my entry point into the wonderful world of Young. I think Rust Never Sleeps is a great album too. That decade between 1969 to 1979 is just incredible really...the bloke's a genius.

I think Mirrorball has some great songs ruined by a shit band. Would have loved if that was a NY solo or CrazyHorse record.

Le Noise is good (must spin it again) but it seems to get a little tiresome at the end, maybe it's aural fatigue with the production. And yeah Dead Man, so good ya listed it twice!

it's got 'like a hurricane' and 'will to love' though. plus it's got all that raggedy country stuff with nicolette larson.

Zuma for me was the first album of his I really loved, but then I picked up Tonights The Night, After The Gold Rush, On The Beach, Ragged Glory/Weld........and plenty more.

My soft spot is for Zuma so I'll plump for that.

(but Tonights The Night when I'm wrecked)

(and then Harvest for when I'm feeling all homely)

He did... but I still have to put harvest there instead of zuma
(although I listen to the latter a lot more, for me it would be like betraying a childhood friend to leave harvest out)
