Desert Island Discs

Post by simonkeeping »

The idea for this thread came from listening to it this morning, they had Bear Grills on it and he had some pretty bad choices including nickelback. So after a bit of online banter someone asked me what would I choose?

To be honest Im still racking my brains trying to work out where to start? Its a ridiculously hard to narrow down 8 songs (including one favorite). You're also allowed a luxury item and a book. What would you choose and why?

Easier (but still difficult) to name top 8 bands. Was there another thread about that in yesteryear?

I've done this before. But 8 is an odd number. It was usually 10 or 15.
I'll give it a go.
1. Rolling Stones- Exile(shocker)
Song: I Just Wanna See His Face
2. Spiritualized- Lazer Guided Melodies
Song: Shine A Light
3. Neil Young- Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Song: Cinnamon Girl
4. Velvet Underground- Third
Song: What Goes On
5. Flaming Lips- In A Priest Driven Ambulance
Song: Unconsciously Screamin'
6. Julian Cope- Fried
Song: Sunspots
7. Echo & the Bunnymen- Porcupine
Song: Head Will Roll
8. 13th Floor Elevators- The Psychedelic Sounds Of
Song: Tried to Hide
9. Four Tops- Reach Out
Song: Bernadette
10. Big Star- Number One Record
Song: Watch The Sunrise

Totally impossible!

I'd go along with Runcible in naming my top 8/desert island eight bands. Much more do-able. Not saying it wouldn't be really tough..

Very difficult.

The original post actually asked for 8 SONGS and this morning I was going to post a question asking if we could list 8 albums rather than songs. I like spzretent's thinking. I too would have to go with full length discs rather than single tracks.

Realizing many who post and lurk here are music obsessives you should make it 25 albums, your choice of tipple, and what food you couldn't live without. Any more suggestions?

Its the format off the show,a radio institution ,didn`t make the rules, yeah its hard but maybe whittling it down is part of the fun,if you can pick 8 albums ,try picking your fav. song of each although by that method I think my picks would probably be different, any way chose these songs because by rights I should be sick to the back teeth of them having heard them so often ,but weirdly I can still listen to them almost anytime and still be filled with joy and by my logic they would stand me in good stead on a desert island I think,

p.s. these choices, no doubt if I though about it would change most days of the week.

Pink Floyd - Echoes,

The Beatles- In My Life,

Bob Dylan- Desolation Row,

The Clash- White Man In Hammersmith Palais,

The La`s- Timeless Melody,

Van Morrison- Astral Weeks,

Underworld- Dirty Epic,

Spacemen 3- Hypnotized,

My discs of choice will be 8 dual layer double sided dvd:s..
may require some thinking to get it down to about 1000-1200 albums (in 320kbps mp3 format) but I think it´s doable.. :P

but ok, if the thread title is misleading and it´s supposed to be 8 tracks..

I hope it´s not a very boring island?
expecting it to be somewhere between King Kong and Lost so I´m mixing slightly scary and calming music. The tracks are a bit longer than your average lady gaga tune.

Soft machine - Moon in June (1968 version) 20:46
Philip Glass - Subterraneans 15:11
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Dream 21:23
Genesis - Supper´s ready 22:50
Pink Floyd - Atom heart mother 23:44
Pink Floyd - Echoes 23:29
Talk Talk - The rainbow eden desire 22:38
Van Der Graaf Generator - A plague of lighthouse keepers 23:04

less than three hours..

will this little excursion last more than a week?

book: bhagavadgita
luxury item: only standard moroccan,

In the case that it´s a long vacation I´d rather bring some hemp seeds (for making ropes and clothes of course)

OK, this is Desert Island discs, so normal “best of” rules don’t apply.

Here’s my 8 songs:

Tindersticks - My Sister
Brian Eno - Music for Airports
Spiritualized - I Think I’m in Love
Love - You Set the Scene
Spacemen 3 - OD Catastrophe
The Stooges - Loose
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Carny
My Bloody Valentine - Soon

Book: Jamie Oliver - Jamie's Italy - I could have a crack at some of the fish recipes.

Luxury: I was going to put Camel cigarettes but I guess this would be a good opportunity to pack up smoking so an endless supply of a good Chablis is probably a better choice.

I look forward to playing OD Catastrophe to Kirsty Young 8)

This is sort of impossible but...

Rolling Stones - She's A Rainbow
Spacemen 3 - Walkin' With Jesus
Led Zeppelin - What Is and What Should Never Be
The Heads - Hairy Chapter from February 2005 rehearsal
The Beatles - I Feel Fine
Bardo Pond - RM
The Damned - Plan 9 Channel 7
Lee Scratch Perry - Dreadlocks In Moonlight

This list will change in an hour I reckon, and then again this afternoon./

Virtually impossible to list only eight songs (so I chose 10). I am sure I will want to change/substitute this list as soon as I post it. But here you go:

'Road' - Nick Drake
'Ambulance Blues' - Neil Young
'Trouble' - Cat Stevens
'Hear My Train A-Comin' (live 10/10/68) - Jimi Hendrix
'Into Dust' - Mazzy Star
'Morning Dew' (live 2/28/69 or 5/2/70) or maybe 'Brokedown Palace' (studio)- Grateful Dead
'Slip Inside This House' - 13th Floor Elevators
'Aldrin' - Bardo Pond
'Shine A Light' - Spiritualized
'Daisies of the Galaxy' - Eels

Favorite? If I had to choose just one from the above list it would probably be 'Road' by Nick Drake. Why? The guitar is so beautifully played that it makes me weep with joy.

Book: A sketchbook so I can draw.

Luxury item: a guitar so that I am not limited to the 10 songs listed above!

1. Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros: Bhindi Bhagee
Album: Global A Go-Go
2. The Durutti Column: Vigil
Album: Someone Else's Party
3. Spiritualized: Shine A Light (Clear Light/Clear Rush)
Album: Fucked Up Inside
4. The Stars of Heaven: Two O'Clock Waltz
Album: Speak Slowly
5. Mogwai: Mogwai Fear Satan
Album: Young Team
6. The Fatima Mansions: Blues For Ceauceseu
Album: Viva Dead Ponies
7. Magazine: The Light Pours Out Of Me
Album: Real Life
8. Kraftwerk: Radioactivity (live)
Album: Minimum-Maximum

Book: aw come on, that is just too difficult...... Maybe 'The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire' (unabridged).

Luxury: Endless supply of Mayer Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley.....

This is REALLY difficult. There is no Spacemen 3, Joy Division, Stereolab, The Heads, VU, Spectrum or Galaxie 500 (to name but a few) on the list. There is no jazz,or classical music (Ornithology by Charlie Parker was close though). I am pretty sure if I did the list again in a few months time it would look radically different. This is my Desert Island Disks list for December 2011 really......

Hmmm... without putting too much thought into this, and trying to pick what would be my fav songs with the artists i would consider, my list would be:

Spiritualized - Feels Like Going Home
Spacemen 3 - Losing Touch With My Mind
Boo Radleys - Paradise
Telstar Ponies - Does Your Heart Have Wings?
BMX Bandits - Hole In My Heart (demo)
The Heads - Legavaan Satellite
Bardo Pond - Isle
Teenage Fanclub - Star Sign
Led Zeppelin - How Many More Times
Asteroid #4 - Kate And The King

Think i could possibly survive with those...

Luxury item? Would have to be a guitar...

Book? Probably Fear & Loathing... never fails to amuse me...

I've never seen this program, are you meant to take the premise seriously, or is it just an excuse to talk about your favourite songs?

either way, I've selected songs that I love, but also that are quite long (how bored would you get of a the same 3 minute songs over and over?), and some selections that would sound awesome sleeping on the beach as the sun comes up :)

Bob Dylan- Visions of Johanna
Can- Hallelulah
Dirty Three- Authentic Celestial Music
John Martyn- Small Hours
Jimi Hendrix - 1983
Ride- Nowhere
GYBE- Static
Talk Talk - The Rainbow

It's on the radio so a listening thing rather than visual - Radio 4. Been going for decades. And it is indeed a chance for whoever is on it to play their favourite music and say why they like it. It can be very engaging.

Ditto! Anyway, have been potentially layed off work until after Christmas, plus I'm in bed with a rotten cold so now seems as good a time as any to try and get my head round this impossible task. This is what I've come up with so far this morning, just going through my i-Tunes and trying to get a mix of mellow and heavy stuff (pretty damn hard when you've only got 8 songs to play with!). Anyway, here's my collection which would hopefully get me through till I was rescued off the proverbial desert island:-

Carlton Melton - When You're In

Mogwai - New Paths to Helicon

Spiritualized - Shines A Light

The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps

CSN & Y - Almost Cut My Hair

Stone Roses - Tears

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Down By The River

Primal Scream - Come Together

Luxury Item - Guitar

Book - How to play the guitar guide ( :? )

Not an Easy Task; UNLESS I could just have my home and contents "Transported" ONTO the Desert Isle; I hope there is an area of Untouched jungle on this isle; and 75 Years of Underground Fuel storage for the generators.

In 1980, Deutche Grammofon released, and I purchased, "Sounds" a 10 LP Box Set of "Albums you would want on a desert island". It was, naturally, incomplete, but a noble effort, and an EXCELLENT Quality set of German Pressings.

Many Great Recordings have been made, or rediscovered and made available since "Sounds" was released.

Since I have the "enviable problem" of several hundred New selections that I have not yet heard, I believe I will wait a while because I am certain My List will evolve.

Because it IS a desert island, I suppose w/ a premise of no way out, One song comes to mind from David Gilmours
Debut Solo album, w/ "There's No Way Out of Here, when You're in You're in for good........." It might be useful to have a recording that is not only well done, but allows one to come to terms w/ possible complete lifetime isolation, which, in many ways, appeals to me. Just Airdrop Food, Drink, Refreshments, and New Recordings..........

There was a thing on this on TV this morning. The programme celebrates it's 70th birthday this year and they went over a few things with a large graphic of some 7" singles behind the presenters. To my surprise the main record in the picture was Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers but I couldn't see which single it was, but it was on the Berserkley label. An interesting choice.

today's is Professor Tanya Byron and she seems very impressive. now what would be your 8 tracks? (singles not albums) as in 8 tracks that you cannot live without or 8 tracks that define a moment in your life

Glad I'll never have to do this in 'real life'...

Off the top of my head:

Sex Pistols - Pretty Vacant - because it's where it all started for me
Beta Band - Dry the Rain - because it would always remind me of the missus
Underworld - Moaner (live off Everything Everything) - as reminder of past glories
Spiritualized - Let it Flow - gotta have a bit of Spz in there!
Pink Floyd - Sheep - ditto
Miles Davis - dunno, something by Miles definitely
Low - Canada - a firm favourite of so many 'all back to mine' sessions it's not true
Talk Talk - Runeii - to get me off to sleep at night with a smile on my face

Book - Fear & Loathing: on the Campaign Trail 72 by Hunter S Thompson

Luxury - a big bag of the best charlie...

Oh yes. Well said that man. Seeing that on Top of the Pops in 1977 remains THE pivotal moment in music for me. Everything changed in those 2 or so minutes and hasn't been the same since. My 'before and after' moment.

 I don't remember writing that, but I'm hard pushed to disagree with much of it. Would probably not want the Mayer now though........
