I really like Heading For The Top too, but I preferred the live version from last year when it was noisy all the way through. I Am What I Am is fantastic too.

I'm really surprised this album hasn't leaked yet- even the older one before the tweaks Jason made

WOW. That sounds great! I'm actually a little bit surprised. Headin' for the Top and get what you deserve sounds like they have some good fuzz and synth zaps mixed in. yeah, I'm really excited now.

Amazon.com, not .co.uk - find the mp3 download version.

As for me, I hate listening to snippets, but did let my mouse hover over them for a second before going 'it's only two weeks!' and slamming the laptop shut

yeah its weird, whats this thing Jason likes to do where it sounds like the vocal was recorded in a different building to the rest of the song! its kind of dry sounding. maybe he's going for the Lou Reed deadpan thing, but I prefer the live versions

just has another listen to the clips and I retract my statement about the vocals.. it's all sounding rather good and I cant wait to hear the whole thing!
it sounds like Mary crossfades into Life Is a Problem.. in the gigs their running order was the other way round.. one of the bits of 'tinkering' Jason did?

one thing I don't like though is the drum fills from Get What You Deserve seem to have gone.. one of my favourite parts of the live version!

I've been thinking about the intro to the album. Could it be something like the sound of walking to a car and starting it up? It would fit with the 'drive fast and play loud' in the sleeve notes and the stop sign artwork. What do you think?

"Drive fast and play loud" has appeared on at least a few (earlier) SPZ records.

I just saw that metacritic has posted a very solid 82 score for SH, SL based on 6 reviews.

It also has the album coming out on the tenth. I must have missed something. I thought it was coming out the 17th.

Wiki says the 16th, Amazon too, but I was in HMV the other day in Dublin and they had a list of upcoming releases with it on the 13th.

Nope. "What?"

I am absolutely blown away by the album. Pure ecstasy!

I will have it on 24 / 7 for the next week. Wow Wow Wow.

I know it is new, but I think it is my favorite Spiritualized album.

mmmmmmmmmmm

Oh, and I will be buying every format available so I do not feel guilty for having it now.

"Get What You Deserve" is droning on as I write this. Oh Yeah, Baby!

I was listening to my promo I got that has Hey Jane radio and album edits and I'm fucking PUMPED. They sound fantastic. J's voice is so frail and delicate in some parts, it feels like he's going to keel over. I think it adds to the overall effect of the music. Jesus Christ, it's great.

Yeah but playing all the previous albums back to back and on repeat is building up the anticipation of a new album.
I haven't even watched the BBC red button Radio 6 gig that I recorded and put on to DVD yet.
I only succumbed to listening to "Hey Jane" in a rare moment of weakness.

This is hardcore, like going cold turkey and waiting for the next big fix.*

If I`m not mistaken the author was in The Cooper Temple Clause & Dirty Pretty Things ,how that makes him qualified to critique a Spiritualized album I`m not sure ,but it sure reads like a shitty article,

at least he seems to have listened.. most reviews say almost nothing and give you the suspicion that the "journalist" heard LAGWAFIS a few times in the nineties and not much more..
I do see what you guys mean.. but I prefer reviews like this over the "pro" ones - the ones forgotten within 30 seconds.

If you are of a sensitive disposition look away now. Although it can't really be said to be a review of the album in any sensible way. A rant against the video, which I agree is unpleasant. Didn't Everett True introduce the Daniel Johnston show?

I came across this lovely little display at a fantastic little independent shop in Sydney, Australia while I wandered the city earlier today: http://instagr.am/p/JTeym1Fdue/ According to the posters, it comes out April 13 (tomorrow) in Australia. I may or may not have snagged a copy already... Very exciting indeed!

I think its quite funny the way Everett True felt the need to come and defend his reviewer. Clearly he has all the answers or at least thinks he does. I think the comments already on there make a better argument than I could.

Ah, my bad - thought the review was written by Everett True, because, well, he's a cunt.

About the use of the word 'cunt', Everett True goes 'Yeah, she can say it because she's a feminist'. Something about that sits really uneasy with me. I mean, I could classify myself as a flaneur because I walk everywhere. I could classify myself as a feminist because I'm not a misogynist, but I think it's an act of self-classification that's very self serving. What sounds better? I walk everywhere and don't hate women, or I'm a feminist flaneur?
But that doesn't change the fact that it's an offensive word, and if you're as clever as you think you are, you just don't drop offensive words into conversation and think you can get away without being offensive. I think that's my problem with it. They both think they're very clever, but if someone reading this got offended by the multiple C-bombs dropped on this page I wouldn't turn around and say 'I'm a feminist and I can say that word, and it's ok'. Being clever is no excuse for being obnoxious.

Sorry for the ramble, this sort of thing pisses me off.
Reading the comments, everybody is some sort of self-congratulatory ass. Talking about art as a concept and namechecking some French philosophers doesn't make your views any less ill-informed or a better critic because you are being paid to actually review the album and not regurgitate your fucking degree for money. ARGH. That's better.

I'll stop soon, promise, but there are actual clever, insightful, and thoughtful reviews taking into account Spiritualized as a 20 year old musical entity and all that, and not just 'Man, that video doesn't seem related to the song, does it?' Like this one, which actually works as a neat parallel to the crappy one.

not sure I should have publicised it more than it needed to be. Everett True posted on the guardian album thread say that the video was 'reprehensible' with a handy link to their in depth review. Self aggrandisement. Opinions are apparently only worthwhile on the internet if they are really extreme. Why be measured and thoughtful, when you can post obnoxious crap and get a lot more click through for your money.

I can understand why the reviewer was upset by the video, I didn't like it much either, watched it once, probably wont be watching it again. But I can't say I think it is taking advantage of anyone. No more than an episode of the Wire, which is lauded by seemingly everyone, right on guardian writers included, but I've never managed to get into it.

As far as the stuff about privilage, it was Sonic who went to public school, not Jason. And apart from the school Rugby isn't particularly posh.

Spiritualized and Spacemen 3 have always been honest about their influences. Nothing exists in a vacuum. Jason is particularly good at assembling these influences into what I consider as something new and original or at least extremely well done, while they consider it pastiche. Fair enough, but that argument could have been made far more effectively rather just talking about the video and not even bothering to to talk about the songs themselves.

Two paragraphs in I realized I had a splitting headache and stopped reading. So I really am not sure the point the reviewer was driving at.
Seems interesting to me how much time ET and LC have to respond to comments tit for tat(is that sexist?).
So now ET has a blog that 100 people read. Seems this was done for no other reason that to advertise his blog.
Period.

It can be summed up quite quickly :

Some paragraphs about Art probably rehashed from whatever degree she took. Headache-inducing is an excellent description.
J recycles stuff. She's biased against him before even listening to the album. She hates - really hates - the Hey Jane vid. She hates J and Spiritualized.

Her style is both pompous and vacant and indeed hard to read.

... I really, really wanted to go and respond to that "review" (although hatchet job seems a more apt description), but I'd be there all day, and some sensible voices have been posting too, and fuck it! I've got better and more important things to be doing than responding to total bullshit with ET and his appallingly ill-informed shit-spewing reviewer. It seems to me she's made an awful lot of assumptions about things. Not so long ago I defended Everett True... I take it all back now, the guy is a total chump. Even Courtney Love won't talk to him these days. And anything else being said is just gonna give the guy some more publicity.

(And claiming the album sounds like "Lou Reed". That's just fucking lazy. Bets he's not even heard it.)

Totally agree here. I wouldn't suffer that review and the comments on anyone.
Here's the thing, I actually work with some pretty appalling people. That's my job. And yet I've never felt so angry and compelled to rant as I have at these two morons. And what's worse is this may be the first time I've struggled to pin point why exactly.
You should totally stay away from this.

I haven't been saying much about SHSL because, honestly, my expectations have been low. I've said before that I thought Songs in A&E was a compromised record, with some tentative songwriting and production that just didn't "feel" like Spiritualized.

Between that album, the indifferent concert I saw on that tour, and then that J toured Ladies & Gents (which I've long felt is severely overrated), I had more or less concluded that Spaceman's glory days were behind him.

Well, last night I had the chance to listen to the new album, and I am very pleased to say that J Spaceman has blown my expectations out of the water. The production is stunning and it feels more of a piece with his whole body of work than A&E did -- I actually think it might be his spaciest release since Pure Phase, but more subtly so. The songwriting is sharp and memorable, revisiting familiar themes but also striking out in new directions more successfully than his last album. Overall the album seems to combine the reinvention of A&E with the concise precision of Amazing Grace.

One of my favorite bands has roared back to life! Perhaps I would have chosen a different title or artwork, but I am thrilled with the new record.
