Simple Minds 6x CD Box Set

Post by spzretent »

I know there are some fans of the early music. This box is really inexpensive and it stops with New Gold Dream.

15 quid from their web site
13 quid from Amazon UK.
Not shilling. Just a fan.

I love that Sons and Fascination period - people I've played the best songs to are amazed at just how good they are and how psychedelic some of Charlie Burchill's guitar is. Some thick bass grooves too. Amazing to think it's over 30 years since this stuff came out.

I know many here sneer at the thought that they produced good music after the awful chart stuff but that 1981 period featured some fantastic moments. Like this:

And this masterpiece, which inadvertently influenced the early rave scene. Probably their finest ever moment.

Let them sneer!
I cant wait for this box set.
I realize how they became bloated arena rockers(or tried) after this point.
These 6 LPs are well worth owing too for under 3 quid each, shipped!.

I listened to that love song link this morning, and enjoyed it. Now listening to it on 6 music as I type. Spooky!

Inspiring. I knew I'd liked them - rummaged through vinyl in attic today, and located most of these as well as 12" singles from period. Ignored the bloated later stuff, they're still in attic!

Amazing value. Adding the 12" mixes etc is a real bonus. Never liked the first album, but all the other albums up to and including New Gold Dream were brilliant.

I went off them when next album Sparkle In The Rain came out, although there were some good tracks on that album as well.

One later track I did like though was the instrumental A Brass Band In African Chimes. I think it was the B side of Don't You Forget About Me, which was the single that really seemed to mark their turn in direction to bloated stadium rock.

I never really liked the 1st album but after having gone back recently to listen to it it sounds a lot better than it did before. Remarkably it holds up quite well. Pleasantly Disturbed is an amazing track.

There you go kids, if you want your band to continue making interesting music don't kick your bass player out and keep on the drugs.

The Verve get a lot of airtime on this board for the contrast between their early and later stuff, but the variance between what Simple Minds were to what they became made a deeper scar in me. They will always be special to me as the first gig I ever saw was Simple Minds at Glasgow Barrowlands, but the truth is I can't listen to anything beyond New Gold Dream anymore.

So many amazing songs on Sons and Fascination, I've fallen asleep to that album for the past week on my ipod.

Thanks for this link. Great article/interview.
Simple Minds were the band I collected in the 80's. I kept what I thought were the essential records and peddled off the collection to someone who lives in the Orpington who never, ever, wavered in his love of Simple Minds. To this day I am really happy that ridiculously large collection went to a 100% fan.
I am really looking forward to this box set and hopefully some you tube clips of this new tour to see if the band can pull it off.
Jim Kerr seems remarkably aware of the arc of his career which is pretty cool.
I agree with him and the writer, the older records are really pretty amazing. And they have aged very well.
The fact they dug up this fantastic track blows me away

I knew there would be a Simple Minds thread on here!
And no surprise to find a few folks who rate the early stuff as much as i do.

Just found this radio session on YouTube that includes a track called Here Comes The Fool that I had never heard.
