Hey Jane / Album Art (Pitchfork)

Post by TheWarmth » Fri Feb 24, 2012 2:29 pm

I think this deserves it's own thread:

http://pitchfork.com/news/45536-spiritu ... bum-cover/

Hopefully we will get an offical announcement/explanation about the artwork.

I'm on my second listen and am really digging it! I can't wait to have this on vinyl. Might have to buy the mp3 off of iTunes to tide me over, though.

:D :D :D
Thanks for this Paul... I tried so very hard not to listen to this but... I'm off today, the sun is shining, and Spiritualized are back in 2012! It sounds a m a z i n g ... 8)

Dig the alternative octagonal op-art design as well. So that is the cover art... well, why not. Definitely not what I imagined. Which is always good...

(Maybe this is sourced from one of the promo cds - as supposedly unfinished?)

That's not too bad a song actually. Much prefer it after the breakdown, where it all goes a bit motorik then gospel vibes near the end. I also like the scuzzy and rough sound to it, which will win me over more than a clean and precise Spz recording.

As for the album art..........not so sure.

Hey Jane is sounding great!

Not sure what I think about the album art, I was going along with the idea that is was just a place holder, but I don't think it is any worse than the last two. I'd like to know the idea behind it. Maybe it is time to move away from the Farrow minimalism.

No way! I love it and the minimalism. It's a mockery about everything.

Song is really good — especially the second part.

Disappointed about the artwork, but I guess it saves me the cost of buying the vinyl. Not that I don't usually like supporting Spaceman, of course.

Glad to hear you all like the song -- I'm going to try to wait to release date so I can hear everything in one piece.

the song feels kind of unnecessarily long

if it stopped it at the first part it would be a tight little pop song

just a first impression though.. it's still pretty cool

Jury is still out on the album cover, but it does look better when "big" compared to the thumbnails from before, and in tandem with the single artwork you can at least see where they are headed with the octagon shape as a theme.

LOVE the tune though - sounds a bit weak at low volume, but the louder it gets the better it sounds. I think I could be a fan of the album if all the production sounds like this - big songs but with a slightly rough, home-made edge.

I'm supposed to be most excited for me wedding in April, but getting my hands on this album is running it close!

neat trick with splitting hey Jane into two sides of the 45, - might increase chances of some radio play?

It certainly does. Op art sleeve for Hey Jane single is cool although very similar to the Spectrum/Cheval Sombre split 7". Pierce copies Kember again!

The song itself sounded better coming out of the laptop than on the headphones. :?

unless the sleeve in real life is embossed, foil blocked, spot uv varnished and has a pop up centre section with scent infused ink, it's a no from me

The op art thing again? It's pretty tired at this point. Also, Sonic still uses that style for his Spectrum releases.

Hopefully some show up on eBay. I'd like to have both the UK and US version on wax. Might have to hit up some friends in the UK, although to be honest none of them have any taste in music at all.

Really digging the new song. Every album I go into it thinking..."this has got to be the time the Spaceman finally lets me down." ...I'm wrong every time. :)

Don't care about the artwork. He could put a picture of dog poop on it and I wouldn't care, just as long as the music is good.

Wow, I'm listening to this now and I'm really digging the 2nd side - especially when J and the choir start chanting the title of the album over that vaguely kraut-rockin' beat! If this song is any indication of what the rest of the album is going to sound like, I think we're in for a real treat.

Also, now that the cover is confirmed, I'm even more intrigued. If nothing else, the covers are always thoughtful and executed with a great attention to detail, so I doubt very much that this was simply thrown together. I could be wrong, but I suspect Farrow Design is still behind this one - with Jason's input and/or direction of course.

I love this song and it feels like the "sweet heart, sweet light" section should have always have been in existance. Also, the Other Voices version is just as good.

So very, very excited.

reminds me of the two songs in one that was Cop Shoot Cop where it broke down and came back with the stunning "The desert is..." section.

Is that some sort of error? I mean, Pitchfork mentions that song in its little write up..... How strange.

Jadams, it's apparently so on both sides of the Atlantic - Double Six in the UK and Fat Possum in the US. Certainly is curious.

Worry not, chums, if Domino is dumb enough to give Americans an abridged release (which I find highly unlikely), surely some of your pals in these parts can help make sure you hear the whole album.

I'm sure it's just a mistake on their part that Life Is A Problem and Pretty Things have been missed off. After all, Pretty Things is a fairly typical Spz album closer.

I'm intrigued as to what Huh (Intro) will be - an unused Harmony piece from A&E?

pre-ordered the 7". i'm a big fan of 2-part 7" singles- really looking forward to getting it in the mail. in the meantime i'm just going to visit that page and listen to the song a ton since i can't buy it on itunes yet. i like the live version a lot better, but that's usually the case with any spiritualized song- the spirit of the recording is nice as it's not quite what i expected- it's nice and gritty, which is good.
i hope fat possum releases a vinyl version- i don't know why they wouldn't as they always seem to. it looks like it might not be released until well after the cd at this point, though. i suppose it's still a little under two months away, so we'll see.

Here you go...

http://hypem.com/#!/search/spiritualized/1/

Listened to it once so far. Really stoned the first time (now), like it.
Like someone else said, first half is a great pop song.
Could have ended at that point, glad it didn't.
Again, maybe cause the state I'm in but for about the first minute of the second half it almost sounded like parts of the last Arcade Fire album.
The Bass parts song really good to me.
Into the song as a whole and the outro is great.
Not to say I havn't enjoyed the last two releases but to a certain point almost accepted them because they were new Spiritualized recordings and that in itself is a good thing.
But this sounds like something I may actually feel passionate about.

Wow, what a shit cover.

I'll avoid the song as I've managed to avoid everything so far apart fom the Other Voices gig which I found disappointing.

Um, what is it with Jason continually copying Sonic with the 7" cover? It's not like Sonic releases loads of stuff. Does nobody mention it to him?

I hope it's a typo because those are my 2 favourites :? as far as Hey Jane goes I think it's brilliant. And well done on the track split. It might get airplay. The artwork for the single left me feeling a little queasy after a while of staring in itunes to be honest lol not too sure about the whole huh? thing though. It made me chuckle in all honesty

How can I legitimately buy this song in the US? Very frustrating that I cannot buy via iTunes. I suppose I can just wait until the vinyl is released but this song is too good.

This rules: in a first for spiritualized, j spaceman is joined on vocals by his 11-year old daughter poppy spaceman on 'so long you pretty thing', who also wrote the opening verse
"for an artist as consistent as spiritualized's j spaceman, whose 7th studio album 'sweet heart sweet light' and new single 'hey jane', it's easy to assume that there's a certain effortlessness to the creative process."

- Probably the wrong wording given the similarity of "Hey Jane" to this "Joy" track linked to earlier...

oh well, still a fan of the track and anxiously await the album.

knew it sounded somewhat familiar..

I know some of them/even played in a band with one of them

From what I remember Simon is of course a huge spacemen3/early spectrum fan.. (not sure about spz)

I would say it is kind of fun if J. is slightly inspired by someone hugely inspired by him..

I think the song just brilliantly draws on silverbullit's joy, creating an even better melody that fits perfectly well within a spiritualized context! Its like the inspiration comes from the other way around

compared with live it just seems lifeless. i still love it but live it had more kick, plus the strings from albert hall etc
'raging and weeping are left on the early road
now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie
of soaring crosses and poisened thorns'

Bloody hell, I'm loving this track.

I can't stop listening to it since I saw the link earlier today.

I have to agree it was punchier at the gigs, still love it though! (It's also providing a hilarious soundtrack to the BBC2 programme about boybands tonight..) Although I'm a bit worried this could end up being my favourite song on the new album, that and So Long, but I still don't manage to love So Long as anything but a 'guilty pleasure'.

Surprised no-one raised this point before - I'm so glad this is the first single!
At 9min long too - it will be interesting to see how that works out for radio play, even with the two halves. I was totally expecting "Little Girl", but in hindsight, it's no longer EMI so it kind of makes sense.

I wasn't aware of Silverbullit either before, and yes there's a resemblance, but I'm sure that at the time of the October gigs someone pointed out an MC5 tune which had the same riff - and that seems a much more likely inspiration. My first hand impressions from the Edinburgh gig were that it was felt very kraut/motorik inspired.

What, do you really think those two songs sound the same? Cause they don't...

The slide part is very very similar — but I would not point fingers just yet.

It's an absurdly simple guitar riff, it's not beyond possibility that two different bands could have done it similarly.

i was just being flippant, and (un)funny

but behind every joke there is some kinda truth.. right??
what i mean is, i coulda made that comment about a lot of spacemen songs.
i reconciled myself along time ago to the notion they are merely chancers fueled by a greatness borrowed. but ultimately everyone is, & it's how you re-use these things. j does have a good sense of humour which probably is his most precious saving grace & allows him get away with tricks that other's wouldn't.

but what i really think is: if the rest of the album's as good as hey jane it's gonna be a winner.
i like what they've done w/the 2nd half & besides we'll get enough live versions to keep everyone happy.
it's pitched pretty perfectly atm, quite like BIJAF where it's just the right side of too much.
wouldn't have minded if doggen hadda brain donor'd it a bit more, but again there's plenty of that on the live versions (& there needs to be even more!)
the ending is sublime. prob the best song i've heard about a car since SFA's Valet Parking.

tho this comment from the other thread did make me laugh

I don´t think anyone who has listened to a lot of music seriously can consider it song theft..

there is some similarity of notes there, further strengtened by a similar sound but I can assure you that silverbullit/citizen bird´s sound is heavily based on Sp3 and Spectrum.
Those notes and the way they are used come from a palette of already partly mixed colours (scales harmonies phrasing) used by Jason since spacemen3 days.
It´s not a jason-painting-by-numbers melody but it kind of is a variation expected from post-sp3 or bands having them as main sources of inspiration (as in this case).
If this is theft then you might as well stop listening to rocknroll altogether.. casue that means pretty much all of it is theft.

btw.. silverbullit used to open all of their shows with a cover of How you satisfy me

Mr Kember was quite sexy when he performed it on TV - I´d do him..

really like this studio version of Hey Jane.. it's quite polished, but not too polished. I will say I prefer the live version though (where the second part sounded even more krauty, and the whole thing had a bit more balls to it)

on my first listen the vocals sounded too far out in front of the mix, but on a second time when I cranked it up it sounded much better.

the two part single thing is pretty cool (makes me think of Little Johnny Jewel by Television.. can anyone think of other instances of this?), and yeah the op art thing has been done to death but i'm a sucker for it, so hey..

as for the album art.. don't like it at all. I dig the minimalism, I dig the colours.. but the word Huh? .. I just don't get it. lame.

I also don't think Jason has 'nicked' this song... those notes are pretty standard, there's only so many notes in that scale that sound pleasing to the ear, and Jason works within pretty standard/classic parameters. even if he did nick that riff, there is still the entire rest of the song, and its whole feel is totally different!!
