Levon Helm in final stages of cancer

Post by angelsighs »

:(

Dear Friends,

Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.

Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration… he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage…

We appreciate all the love and support and concern.

From his daughter Amy, and wife Sandy

Very sad news. The man has been part of some great music, and seems to me the one member of The Band that everyone liked.

With all due respect, i haven't much cared for his recent solo albums. Dirt Farmer to me was the pinnacle of plastic, suburbanized, pseudo-roots music.

I.wish Helm the best.

An American music icon is clearly in the last stage of his life and you think its time to take a pop at his last record?
Sad.

No, it was a tactless comment from one individual. Don't paint us all with one sweeping, generalized paintbrush.

This is sad news indeed about an absolute legend who continued to promote wonderful music inside "The Barn".

I said the news was very sad, tipped my hat to his important role in music history, mentioned that he was well-liked, and wished him the best!

Dirt Farmer wasn't even his last record, by the way. When any musician dies their legacy to the public is their body of work, both the ups and downs. It's not remotely inappropriate on a music forum to offer an opinion on his album, particularly since everything else I said was completely positive. When Michael Jackson died it was appropriate to say Invincible wasn't quite Thriller, etc.

If you disagree with the comment, ignore it or offer your own. The scolds are a bit much.

Perhaps in your world.
I find it wholly inappropriate in a thread with this title.

I find this relatively recent clip a better way to celebrate Levon.

It was his studio where The Black Crowes recorded their last album proper with DVD to go with it. The place looked absolutely magical in that footage and the short clip in which Levon featured showed the guy's genuine love of music. You could tell the vibe the place produced in the Crowes - they were all in awe at where they were.

My knowledge of The Band is limited - the 2 albums I have are glorious - but the legend and influence, of all core members, is without question. It's that legacy, from the earliest recordings by The Band themselves to the artists who used Levon's beautiful facilities, that should be remembered rather than whatever albums the guy released in his later years.

If people don't mind me weighing in, I'll be spinning The Band's Rock of Ages tonight. If only it had that sublime version of It Makes No Difference from The Last Waltz, for me it would be the definitive Band album.

Whispering Pines from the self-titled LP is sublime. Not sure if that's Levon singing or not.

Nah it was Richard who sang the great whispering pines. Levon couldn't sing like that but still had a killer rock n roll voice.

had the Last Waltz on last night myself, probably Big Pink tonight.

what amazing musicians they all were, especially Levon. he could supply a pounding rock n roll beat but also some really weird funky beats too. and what a voice. I know it's an obvious choice but the Last Waltz version of Dixie is stunning

I was reading that Robbie visited his bedside to finally make amends

Bye Levon. I only have three The Band records but they´re great.

I was going to name my firstborn Levonhardu but I chickened out and chose the modern contracted version.. the choice was still in part inspired by Levon.

I had a dream about this thread a couple nights ago. It's really strange because it has been over 8 years since I read these posts. I don't know why my brain conjured it up now. I've never got into The Band, but I might check them out now.
