Making Lists to Play Music to Smoke Weed to...
This weekend, a friend asked me what music I listen to when I smoke weed. His simple question turned into a drawn out, complicated answer when I responded with, "Well, what type of experience are you trying to get?"
After my friend abandoned his question, I made a list in my head. The obvious/gut-reaction choices are early Spiritualized, Spacemen 3, The Heads, and Moon Duo/Wooden Shjips. These bands have the psych/repetitive qualities that go for miles when you're high, but I feel like there is a lot of other music whose qualities can be expanded when the listener is high.
What are your go-to albums/bands to listen to when you are high? What makes them this way? I think it will be very interesting to see what people say...

A list of songs is probably a bit difficult without some serious thought but a few albums off the top of my head...
The Boo Radleys - Everything's Alright Forever (album MUST be played from start to finish! its a rule i have)
Sleepy Sun - Fever
Spz - Lazer Guided Melodies
Julian Cope - Jehovahkill
Lift To Experience - Texas Jerusalem Crossroads
Probably more than a few others...

Speaking from long ago experience...
I think in my early days of such things I would tend to go for the cultural touchstones: Pink Floyd, latter-day Beatles, Hendrix, Bob Marley, etc. Later on, I moved on to other acts that do amazing things with sound -- Verve, early Spiritualized, the Spacemen, Stone Roses, etc.
But then eventually I concluded that any music that's done really well is mind-expanding in its own way. The economy of a good country song that does everything it needs to in 2 minutes can be equally or more otherworldly than a fifteen minute space jam. Really, I think a lot of self-consciously psychedelic music uses that as a crutch to avoid disciplined songcraft.
Things that I have enjoyed under influences include vintage country-blues (Blind Willie Johnson seems to come from a different universe), orchestrated bossa nova, Bach organ works, and plenty of other things. Just avoid anything that doesn't sound good without chemical enhancement!

Tame Impala -- Innerspeaker I'm surprised I haven't really seen any mention of them on these boards, most likely because they've been pretty quiet since they released this album back in '10. If you've heard this album, I think you would probably understand why I put it here, if not, go check it out and have your mind blown.
Animal Collective -- Merriweather Post Pavilion/Strawberry Jam, these two albums are probably my favorite of theirs, they are so textural and layered -- excuse the hyperbole, but they can sorta just be like their own 3d landscapes when smoking trees.
Stereolab -- Peng! Mellower, more meditative but still has drive/repetition that can be come hypnotic, as well as the beautiful song K-Stars.
These next two are more for their sort of emotional appeal to me, when I just like to chill out and think about things/relationships etc.
Yo La Tengo - Painful
No Age -- Nouns - if you don't
Specific Songs -
Deerhunter -- Octet (Cryptograms)/Atlas Sound (w/Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab) -- Quick Canal (Logos)
Bob Dylan -- Girl From the North Country (Freewheelin' Bob Dylan)
Can -- Oh Yeah (Tago mago) - All of Tago Mago, Soundtracks, and Monster Movie are awesome.
Recently -
The Allah-Las -- Tell Me (What's on Your Mind) For those hazy summer days cruising around LA faded, on the way to or from the beach, blaring from a shitty car stereo with the windows down.
Of course, LGM.
I think jadams is totally right though in that for me, it's more just music that I love on it's own becomes even more incredible with your mind in a different state - I guess some stuff does lend itself to that more easily than others?

um didn't a new poster get in trouble once for making a topic similiar to this?
“You're not Dostoevsky,' said the citizeness
'Well, who knows, who knows,' he replied.
'Dostoevsky's dead,' said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently.
'I protest!' Behemoth exclaimed hotly. 'Dostoevsky is immortal!”

Q: What did the deadheads say when they ran out of pot?
A: This music kind of sucks

I wouldn't call myself a "deadhead" but I do love the Dead...especially early, primal Dead. Ignore anything you might know about them or any preconceived biases. If you actually listen you too might "get it".SpaceLine wrote:Q: What did the deadheads say when they ran out of pot?

I've heard that before - a good joke but wide of the mark. Most of the time I play the Dead I am sober and they sound fantastic.SpaceLine wrote:Q: What did the deadheads say when they ran out of pot?

And it took me over 20 years to understand their music.
Re: Making Lists to Play Music to Smoke Weed to...
Keith Richards told that joke in an interview.
I too like me some Dead. Specificly early 70's era Dead.
Interestingly the Spiritualized tour was news on Jam Base(I think thats what its called). A jam band website.
All the lines are blurring together these days.

i think the first lesson of listening to the dead is focus on their live stuff rather than albums.
...and for the purposes of this thread, try kid loco's 'dj kicks' album. incredible!

like spaceman85 said - everything, really.
But I remember for years Recurring used to be the bedtime album of choice. I'd also mention i think I'm in love live at the meltdown in 1998. Evokes strong memories whenever I hear it!

True but most don't know that. I know I didn't and it was only in the last couple of years that I have linked in with that notion. Glad I did though!moop wrote:i think the first lesson of listening to the dead is focus on their live stuff rather than albums.

I used to get laughed at in my shop when a "Dead" fan would walk in hear American Beauty on the CD player. I love a few of the studio lps. Dont understand the mockery that Dead fans unleash.

I don't know about "mockery". I certainly would never mock the studio LP's. 'American Beauty' is a wonderful record as is 'Workingman's', 'Anthem and 'Aoxomoxoa'. I also really like the first record. BUT, these records do not tell the full story. Live is where these songs and the band REALLY come to life.spzretent wrote:I used to get laughed at in my shop when a "Dead" fan would walk in hear American Beauty on the CD player. Tell them to listen to "Earth 2". They'll be floating six inches above the ground by the end of it.
Wish I had some weed.
