Probably 40 years ago on was on a trip to Toronto with my family. I got in the elevator and I was surrounded by these 4 funny looking guys who I couldn't understand. This may have been my first real contact with an English person and my only other way would have been thru Mary Poppins.
Anyway, these 4 guys stated joking with me. They told me they were in a band and wanted to take me to the show with them. My parents said no way. The next day I got in the elevator and there must have been 200 Get Slayed!(or possibly Get Slade!)stickers all over it.
Oh yeah, at one point they told me they were the band Slade. I had not heard of them.
Today I bought a Slade record- Old New Borrowed and Blue. They weren't that good. Must have been a timing thing.

There are moments on Slade Alive (particularly Get Down Get With It) which are superb not to mention surprisingly heavy. Slade made lots of excellent singles and rocked much harder than people realise. You need to ignore the sideburns and mirror hats though.

And I actually bought the legendary '(So Here Is') Merry Christmas' as a 7" in 1973. Every time you hear that song at Crimbo I contributed to its success! I also bought Wizard's 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day' that same year. What do you expect from a 9 year old?!

I played '(So Here Is') Merry Christmas' on the tuba in my school band many years ago. I wasn't very good, so I tried to play quietly, hard to do on a tuba.

Kings Heath has got its own rock'n'roll zone now with UB40 plaque on the Hare & Hounds, a pavement star for Toyah and a plaque at the old venue where the Beatles played. Wonder if we can get them interested in a Sound Of Confusion plaque? (I know the answer to that)

And I keep meaning to get to the 2-Tone Village in Coventry....

had to mention this.... the legendary Dave Hill Out Of Slade will lead a charity world record attempt in Coventry for the most guitars playing one chord at the same time.
Hundreds of guitarists just playing one chord. It'll be like a giant Spacemen 3 homage.

It takes place on Sunday at the Ricoh Arena.

I was there! Dave Hill being there was a total surprise.
it wasn't one chord we had to play- there were 3 riffs- Smoke on the Water, Whole Lotta Love, and All Right Now. it still got pretty hypnotic when just playing one riff for 10 mins on end though!
