i was just listening to his solo album the other day. great stuff! also got to the part in phil lesh's audiobook where jerry goes into a diabetic coma and had to learn how to play guitar all over again. very sad, but i love that just prior to this when he was resisting going into rehab he taught his cat how to fetch. knowing how into coke they all were at the time, my more suspicious side wonders what incentives he used to achieve this purpose! either way, it's pretty amazing.

Great choice of video too.. I think china cat sunflower is probably my favourite dead track (with the obvious exception of dark star live, of course)..

Which one? His 1st?

1971/72 were HUGE & SIGNIFICANT years for the Dead. I capitalize simply to emphasize the importance of those two years. Garcia's 1st solo and Weir's 1st (ACE), which was important as Weir finally established that he had grown up and was able to write and compose songs. A ton of new songs were also written that were added to the live set and lasted all the way through to the end.

In '71 the band stripped things down from psych/country to basic Chuck Berry'esque/country rock. In '71 Pig, of course, was also ill and eventually Keith took over in October '71. By 1972 they embarked on their huge European tour and really moved into the beginnings of what would be a professional band. The band matured dramatically from '68-72 and both Garcia and Weir's solo efforts from '71/72 were hugely influential in the future sound of the band.

Oh yes, there are several Garcia solo LP's. But, as with the Dead there are also a lot of Jerry Garcia Band bootlegs out there. The 1st Garcia solo though is perfect. In fact, especially perfect for the summer. I think runcible will agree too. "Deal", "Sugaree", "Loser", "To Lay Me Down" and "The Wheel"...wow! All tunes that lasted the test of touring because they continued to play them until the end.

Bob Weirs first solo is "Ace". It isn't too difficult to find and has some stellar moments too. He wrote all songs with John Barlow but the backing band are....the Dead. Yep. So, it is essentially a Dead record but Jerry lets Bob run the show.

The Wall of Sound was an amazing concept but also impractical. Fucking awesome photos of them playing in front of it. Owsley designed it and it caused many headaches for him to capture the true sound of what he heard in his head (not to mention transporting it). '74 though, in my opinion, is when they became a professional rock band firing on all cylinders. The band had all become very good musicians and song writers and both Keith and Donna were comfortable in their role. It was a peak in many ways because even the band didn't know where else to take it and thought about breaking up. I think touring with the Wall of Sound also (physically) did their roadies in! They took a brief hiatus but returned to play four live shows in '75 before hitting the road again in '76 without the Wall of Sound.

Personally, I still prefer '66-72 Dead. I really love the raw, primal energy of vintage, psychedelic Dead but my favorite song writing years would probably be '70-72 Dead and both "Garcia" and "Ace" came out during this time.

You're so right about the Garcia album being perfect for summer. In particular, i love Sugaree and To Lay Me Down, though it's all good really. It does go a bit wierd near the end though!

I thought i knew 'deal' from their live sets too, so i guess i was right about that after all.

I found a copy of the Weir album online. Yeah, you can hear it's basically the dead playing, but it's a different feel to most of their stuff. more funk and soul, i guess? I really love that funky bass playing on 'greatest story ever told'. it's just asking to be played through an overpowered subwoofer

i saw the wall of sound pics. insanity!! would have loved to actually been there for that..
and yes, i agree that i probably prefer the earlier, more psychedelic dead too, but can still appreciate the improved songwriting that followed.

I do. Except I always skip Late For Supper and Spidergawd as they don't fit as far as I am concerned. The rest of the songs you highlight are absolutely magical. Sugaree is totally timeless. The trippy end to the album is just fantastic too.

I have older brothers who are major Deadheads and they refer to Ace as THE definitive Dead studio album above all others. But for me American Beauty is one of the most perfect records ever made. It's beyond criticism. The greatest country rock songs ever recorded are on that album.

My favourite live Dead era is 1973, particularly the shows they did at the end of the year when Donna was on maternity. There is something about the way the blokes cover all the backing vocals that feels less strained. Donna was good when she was on form but she couldn't half wail on an off night!

Been playing lots of Dead in all this hot weather I have to admit.

Good call, ro! The album ("Corridor of Faces") is brilliant. Originals being nigh impossible to find (or afford) but it has been reissued including a recent one by Jackpot Records here in Portland.

Also, worth looking for is Euclid's "Heavy Equipment" album. They were from Maine but Lazy Smoke's guitarist joined/formed Euclid. The Beatles'ish harmonies and psych of Lazy Smoke, however, are replaced by some seriously heavy late 60's/early 70's style riff rock on the Euclid record. Originals of this one are also very difficult to locate but it too has been reissued.

I have all three of their albums. Tommy Bolin only plays on the first two (S/T & "Back To Colorado"). The song above is the opening track on the 1st LP. What a monster 'eh? Candy Givens has that big Janis sound and at times she is somewhat wild on the first record but I still love it. The second record sees her more in control of her gigantic voice making for some very sublime moments between music and voice. Sadly though, Bolin was disappointed with the recorded efforts and felt they did not represent the band as well as early demo tapes or the live show so he split to join the James Gang and then later Deep Purple. From everything I have read Zephyr's live shows were incredible. Both Tommy and Candy blowing the minds of their audience.

I wish I had a time machine...

Big gigantic headphones are more popular now with American kids than the ear buds. They wear them around their neck like a fashion statement. Is that the same in Europe?

I have a very nice pair of big cans but I keep them at home by my stereo. I never take them out with me and use on my ipod. I have a decent pair of Sony ear buds that were less than $20 but provide much better sound and far more bass than the white ipod buds that come with it.
