New Brian Jonestown Massacre

Post by runcible »

A friend linked me to this... No idea of anyone else has heard this stream but if you like vintage BJM have a look:

This sounds like a direct return to form for me. Proper drones and vocals and very reminiscent of their stuff pre My Bloody Underground.

I've liked much of the stuff he's been putting out on youtube over past 2-3 years - lots of it patchy, but lots of it very good.

But the stuff that's been coming out past 3 months is definitely a step-up - far more And This is Our Music rather than Who Killed Sgt Pepper

Not a band who could be accused of originality. At least they added a little 13th Floor Elevators into the mix too in that first track.

Well Anton has always sounded like Robert Smith. But I'll take your Cure card and trump it with Moon Duo as that's who the opening track reminded me of!

Having said all that I think is a very strong set of songs and the best BJM I have heard in a long time.

Finally got around to giving this the proper attention it deserves.

Have to say that a lot of bits piqued my interest. I definitely hear some ATIOM as well as BR&N throughout these songs. All good to me as I love those two albums. I was never a big Cure fan so would never have picked up on that comparison but the opening track has a real nod to the Elevators jug with that "warble" running throughout.

Also, there are some wonderful guitar and lovely fuzz on some of the solos. There are probably four or five songs that really got me listening BUT, the one that starts at approx. the 15'55 mark is outstanding! It is easily the most heartfelt, honest and deeply affecting songs Anton has written in YEARS! This is up there with "Open Heart Surgery", "Disconnected", "God is My Girlfriend", "Prozac vs Heroin' and "Tschuss". The song is stunning and incredibly profound. It also, sadly, reads like a death mantra. Absolutely beautiful and very powerful.

I also dig the closing instrumental that comes in at around the 41'20 mark.

Very promising!

Not really BJM, but Anton's got a new project with Tess Parks, and a record out soon. The song, Cocaine Cat, sounds good:

First of all, although I have enjoyed selected 12" singles and a couple of Albums, I first bought BJM recordings as a sort of Type of "novelty" records for my collection, but was pleasantly surprised with several examples! The clever use of wording and language is interesting, but is for me, a sort of "Punk Rock Commercialism" set of Albums and there are some fun goodies with Promo Copies; still it is not something I take very seriously, but it is entertaining. I bought several recordings for the artwork alone, similarly to why I first bought The Dead Kennedy's - but a clearer understanding and appreciation of what they were trying to do came later, and now I enjoy them very much for several reasons; and maybe a similar sort of appreciation will come later for BJM. Although I did obtain "Strung Out in Heaven" for many of the reasons I mention above, including a sort of "cutesy" Promo Edition in addition to the commercial release, I enjoyed that piece; and Methadrone, another purchase originally for non-musical reasons has a strange appeal. Although "less than absolutely original", there is quality of some Uniqueness of Type here, and I find with subsequent listenings, the more I enjoy BJM music; I am still very much behind in my listening, [period], but making progress!

that's funny, when I saw Tess Parks supporting JAMC, the first thing I remember thinking is "this sounds a lot like BJM!"

Me too. Enjoyable enough but ultimately throwaway...

...In saying that I have just seen that Anton and Tess are playing The Sugar Club in Dublin in July so i'll be trying to get a ticket for that on Wednesday morning!
