A spin on the "Love, Peace and Poetry" series that an old tape trader of mine (Stan Denski) started? Cherry Red is a decent label...not sure if a lot of their stuff is bootleg/pirate or legit as it is getting harder and harder to tell these days if the masters are a clean vinyl run through some digital processing or indeed from the real tapes. But, they have some interesting titles and I have come across there releases a few times.

This series compiles some well known psych titles (Tintern Abbey, Open Mind etc.) with some highly regarded obscurities (Forever Amber). It also takes a few early cuts from better known bands in their early days (ex. The In Crowd eventually became Tomorrow). As with any compilation people can question the inclusion or exclusion of certain tunes/bands but this looks like a decent set for the money.

great, thanks for the info!
I think they have been honest and said that some of these are from the master tapes, some aren't (I bet for a lot, the master tapes are nowhere to be seen anyway)
I remember reading someone's opinion that Tintern Abbey created the utterly perfect psych single (they didn't even do an album I believe)

Yea, like I said though...unless the single they use as a master is in poor condition I don't know if you will be able to tell that much of a difference these days with all the editing software. Certainly better than the old 80's releases where you could hear the needle drop on the record they used as a master.

For some pretty cool compilations that have dug up a fair number of obscure psych/pop cuts you should also check out the 'Fading Yellow' series.

Tintern Abbey's single "Vacuum Cleaner/Bee Side" is fantastic. I know runcible is a huge fan too. Personally, I rate the Pretties "Defecting Grey" as the greatest UK psych single ever recorded. Both the official release and the unedited version are absolutely stellar songs. But then again, I'm a huge Pretty Things fan.

I finally bought this compilation the other week, it's brilliant! there's all sorts on there- garage psych rock outs, some weird curios, mod psych with hammond organ, etc etc. very informative booklet too.

it's also surprising how damn catchy a lot of this stuff is, even when it's fairly weird.

and how obscure a lot of it is.. a lot of the sleevenotes say 'never issued'!

I still can't recommend this compilation enough. gems galore!

I've also got my eye on this comp from the same people, which gives psych-folk a similar treatement.

Another nice looking compilation, this time giving space rock the 6CD treatment. I really like compilations like this to give an overview and house all sorts of nuggets. and the clam shell boxes look great lined up on my shelf
