"Frontman Ian McCulloch is quoted as saying “it’s the band’s best work for a very long time.”

He says that every time.
Good title.
Looking forward to it.

Just seen on FB that Black Submarine will be the main support for the Bunnymen's upcoming May tour. Think quite a few on here may be happy with that pairing.

yeah great pairing, an very appealing to me. however tickets are in the region of 30 quid a pop.. makes Loop prices look like a bargain!
they are playing on my doorstep, but unfortunately I have another gig that night! might have to do some moving around, or journey further afield..

that song sounds very bland for me, it's a bit too happy and shiny too.
wasn't Ian's voice suffering a bit a few years back? it sounds okay here.. guess will have to see what the live dates are like.

Just found this on YouTube

A track called Satisfaction from the Crystal Days box set. One of a very few previously unreleased tracks on there. I'm guessing that this was from 1985/6 ish. An unused Grey Album b-side? It holds my attention more than the new track.

The July issue of Mojo has a feature on Pete DeFreitas as it is 25 years since his last ride.
Some nice words from the usual folks. Hardly any on the new release. Worth skimming in WH Smiths.

I have a cassette, the lp and the VHS. So i probably spent more than the 1985 ticket price on obtaining bootlegs of he Bunnymen performance.
Thanks for reminding me that a video exists. When i watched it just now... (skipping through) i was thinking how the person whofilmed it and their associates probably made a few quid via the NME small ads. I got it as a bundle put i paid for it. And i paid for one other E&TB VHS at a record fair. I considered it a bargain as that kind of material just could not be found elsewhere at that time. And all of sudden i had these TV performances that i had read about but not seen.
These days no such rare and budget busting purchases are necessary.

Today was the first time i have managed to listen to it all the way through. Not a good sign but i didn't want to make a comment on it until i had given it some time.
I'm finding it hard to remember any stand out moments or any of the elements of the Bunnymen approach that i love.
I don't like the amount of delay on so much of the vocals. I'm very sure about that. I found it really annoying straight away and it seems a favoured technique across this record. I think that's why i have given up on every other listen. I can't remember being so irritated by something a band i love have done.
And sadly that is all i can say about it at the moment. I will give it several more listens and hope more emerges.

Now i really want to listen to Siberia.

flowers is better on the live in liverpool album. the songs are much better in that setting. i really like half of the fountain but mac's last solo album and this album are just bad, so bad. will didn't even go into the studio, just did it at home and emailed the parts in. then you see the cutter live (the manchester link on youtube) and it is awesome. but with mac's solo tournig (talk, drink, drink, start song, drink, fight, go home) routine and these poor albums, just makes me so sad

the new album isn't bad as such, it's just depressingly, boringly average.
a brave failed experiment would be preferred at this point.

you can definitely tell that Ian wrote the songs, and then Will added his guitar later (Urban Hymns anyone?)
