"Damage" is my favourite at the moment, reminds me of "Broken heart", but there is a lot more going on. Heartbreaking stuff indeed.
"The morning after" is brilliant as well, the last few minutes sound like "The individual" to me. A proper freak-out. Glorious.
Anyone else out there who doesn`t like the whistling sound in "Here it comes" ? It ruins the chorus I`m afraid.
"I`m your man" is okay, his voice sounds sooo fragile here...
"Let`s dance" - wow, he brings in some analogue synths, can`t remember anything like that on a Spz record.
There are some really crazy sounds and even voices / vocals on the record. Did he bring in a mouse choir or sth ?
Overall I can hardly find any "Spz by numbers" songs here, and even the lyrics seem quite different this time.
It feels like it could be maybe his best album for ages after the first day.
Let's Dance reminds me of something off Pet Sounds. I don't think there's a weak link really. My least favourite is probably I'm Your Man.

It's going to be hard to resist temptation, but after waiting years, one more week isn't going to kill me.
I can almost see and feel the vinyl in my hands right now, and if I focus hard enough I can practically hear it! :D

Amazon US has vinyl pre-order available at $15.18.
The deluxe vinyl at $32.99.
And the cd available at $11.27.

Seems to be the least expensive options yet?

bets on these coming up in the next interview:

- I wanted it to be like an old Columbia Records session
- When I got enough money I went into the studio to record a tympani or horns
- When I said it might be the last record I was quite sincere
- I was inspired by doing the Ladies & Gentleman shows and being inside all that sound
- I wanted the album to be like you're driving in a car in the desert

Here ya go. One for the interview bingo/drinking game. A new interview with "Mr Pierce" in the NY Times.

Well, listening for the first time and here it comes:

The Damage - This is a big WOW. One of the most emotional songs he has ever written. Every part is perfect.
Let's Dance - This really captured me. I listened live versions before and already liked it. But the studio version is beating them indeed. The slow beginning, then growing little by little, a perfect melodic ending at the end. Loved it!
On the sunshine - Great Rock'n'Roll. Choir, horns, guitar, keyboards, it is pure Spiritualized. Loved every second, can't help screaming "State of mind!"
I'm Your Man - Ballad song, first single. No surprises in the song itself but liked it anyway. His voice sounds very nice.
Here It Comes (The Road Let's Go) - I still can't help loving the drugged up "Sydney Live 2012" version, which was perfected by Bza for the listening. Studio version is more pop, more catchy. Loved it and listening like hell. But that won't mean i will give up the hazy live version -Sydney 2012 live- That means so much to me.

and...

A Perfect Miracle - For years, for the first time, i felt it again. This is Spiritualized. Back to the origin. I'm loving every bar, every note, every line, every melody of it. The emotions, the melodies, everything is flawless.

Thank you Spaceman. I was 12 when i first started listening you. Now i am 30. I am happy to listen your music, feeling glad that your every single song became my soundtrack. And now, the movie is still going on.

Thank you man, thank you.

But the songs for the album weren’t yet written or arranged; there was no way to simply gather musicians and perform them. Nor did Mr. Pierce have the kind of huge budget a long stint in a professional studio would have required.
I don't know Jon Pareles. I emboldened his most obvious inaccuracies above.

I've paid good money to the NYT for the amazing reporting done by friendly familiar faces such as Maggie Haberman, Mike Schmidt, Jim Rutenberg, Liz Buemiller, Mark Liebovich, David Rosenbaum and Peter Baker - plus many other unrequited heroes, plumbing the soft Trumpian depths to report hard news!

The age of Trump has emphasised the importance of the fourth estate. The respectable reporting has been nothing short of stellar - it needs to remain that way, to keep any and all legitimacy.

We have records of songs written long before And Nothing Hurt was recorded. Mr Pareles could take a lesson from the NYT's Washington bureau, in respect of providing factual journalism and the importance of such at this juncture.

Whilst I doubt the White House has time to concern staff and elected officials with eagerly anticipated music releases, this sloppiness only contributes ammunition to their fake narrative about alleged fake news.

I never thought I'd think the NYT was failing, in the current news climate. We have evidence documented of many of these songs existing in multiple forms, before a single note of And Nothing Hurt was committed to hard drive.

Furthermore Fat Possum / Bella Union provided a budget for recording. Sadly the results were complicated by a failing producer with a business-oriented agenda, not suited to the vast and complex needs involved in the valuable mission of adding to the treasured and carefully curated Spiritualized canon of work.

Apologies for derailing this positive thread with a predictable Trump rant.

This space should not be polluted with such, but in an era where we face the very real threat of a hegemony of lies derailing the truth - exemplary degrees of care and due diligence are not just required, but essential to holding the high ground!

Apologies again for going off script; as you were...

To be fair to the guy (I know his name but not much else about him) Jason has been saying similar. In the 6 Music interview the other day he was talking about the live shows and how they were having to work stuff out because the songs haven't been played live before.

We all know some have, and he knows fans will know that. I think what he was saying is that the songs in the form on the album haven't been played live and weren't finished. Look at the changes to I'm Your Man for example. I expect that and Here It Comes will be different for the forthcoming tour. They all will.

Maybe he should have done more research rather than relying on what the press agent told him before the interview, I dunno. But I wondered what Jason was on about in that 6 Music interview, because A Perfect Miracle and Here It Comes were both played and recorded properly for a charity concert, so he couldn't be saying that public recording didn't exist. But I kind of understand what he meant after a few seconds thought.

I am SWOONING!

It's strange for me, as this is the first SPZ album where I knew the songs so well in advance that I didn't really sit up until On the Sunshine came on. And what a piece of work that is. Every track seems perfectly balanced.. as if Jason has finally hit his stride that he's been working towards since... Amazing Grace! That fucking long!

And every interview centered around this being the last LP! That's fine, release EPs! Christ, stop trying to convince him, interviewers! GLORIOUS!

yeah, i was surprised its not there.

i'm really curious to hear the proper release now. even taking into account the quality of the stream, this doesn't sound like any other spiritualized recording. the press focusing on his at home process put it on my radar, but i think i would have noticed anyway. it seems that different to me. interesting to hear it in all its power and glory

Listened to the stream a couple of times and reckon it's possibly his best since Let it Come Down, but have also listened to SpaceShipp, the Follkaziod collab and the Kenzo soundtracks this morning and think all are vastly superior to it. I honestly think Jason's best work is outside of Spiritualized these days.

beuatiful album. stand out so far let's dance aka baby, i'm a fool slightly different. the production is similar to shsl and may be his sweetest vocal since lagwafis.

it also answers the question what does JS write about when not writing about Jesus and Fire? the answer is car journeys and the NHS

What an album. Thank you Jason.

As I listened it took me back to the days when I'd book a day off of work to go to the only decent record shop in Somerset to pick up the new Spiritualized and then wallow in the music again and again.

If this is it, what a way to go out.

There was some talk when SHSL was released that that would be the last one! I know Jason can't go on forever, but I also can't see him wanting to do much else that make music. I'd expect something else in the future, even if the wait is another long one.

I've been thinking about how I've reacted to this album a lot today. I'm surprised I'm so invested in it given that LGM is and remains a formative musical experience for me & the music has moved on by a distance.

Tentatively, it feels to me that ANH is the destination of a journey J has been on since LICD. I feel J has been reaching for something - a sound, a texture - and each subsequent album has inched towards that something without fully realising "the sound".

ANH to me has the feel of a fully coherent album, with peaks and lulls, strings and feedback, choirs and choirboys, in a way that AG, A&E, SHSL didn't - they had good & sometimes great songs but weren't quite "there".

I love the fact that a Spiritualized album can provoke these reactions in me 26 years after the original.

Anyway, I'm mildly pissed. So do disregard the above.

"Let's Dance" is my funeral song btw.

Glad you`re enjoying it man, currently resisting the urge so far, good to read a positive response though, nothing worse than waiting 6 yr for a new Spiritualized album and coming in here to the same old bitching as the last time he had an album out, and the time before that as well. I would say roll on next Friday but I`m actually enjoying the anticipation, you never know how many times we`ll actually be in this situation again.
Mildly pissed or not enjoy the rest of your evening.

I ended up ordering the white vinyl from Bull Moose here in the USA, since the price was nice at $18.97
https://www.bullmoose.com/p/27462369/sp ... hite-vinyl

I added a $20 mystery 'grab bag' of records which pushed the order above the threshold for free shipping, which I think is $30?

Anyway... I await my physical record album to arrive so I can spin it proper, old-school.

5 Sept 18 status "item(s) has been packaged and will go out in our next shipment."

well I couldn't resist- although I've still not listened to the stream, had to keep peeking at the board to gauge people's reactions. it's very encouraging to hear that the reception has generally been rapturous! can't wait until Friday now. I shall be intently listening on Friday alongside the lush new Durutti Column reissue.

can't believe 'A Song' didn't make it though- it needed tightening up a bit but was a great rocker. guess it just didn't fit. maybe he should stick it on the B side to a single! :D or more likely it will be lost forever

delivery of the new LP arrived this morning! gorgeous packaging, a return to form! very excited to strap on the Sennheiser's and have a record listening experience the proper way. thus far I've avoided the stream and two singles that were released...with help by others on this board pledging the same. thank you for your psychic-togetherness to avoid a sub-par streaming experience!

one question those for those in the states...did anyone else receive the vinyl and not other items you may have purchased at the time? i opted for the enamel badge and shirt...perhaps being fulfilled by another company? Fat Possum shipped the LP.

onward we go...

The only track i am not too keen on is PM track 1. I just find it a bit twee, however the rest is beautiful, uplifting & amazing. I can not recommend enough having a drive to it as J suggested in interviews about a journey through USA.

I personally quite like the idea of having a lengthy break up detailed in a song that's a bit twee. It offsets it nicely.

Wow this album is getting quite a few rave reviews!

Jason is only 4 years younger than Dylan when he did Time Out Of Mind.. That seems really weird :o

One thing I didn't quite get in that review - hasn't Jason's music ALWAYS been quite existential and spoken clearly about death and time running out/not having long left?

I received the CD (yesterday) and album today (from Maryland). Can't stop listening to it. Sail on Through and Let's Dance are favs so far but the entire album is incredible. Jason has plenty left in his tank - he's very critical of himself which one reason why he produces nearly flawless records every time. Can't wait to see SPZ in Brooklyn next month and think I'm about to purchase tixs for LA (the overpriced ones on stubhub but why not).

Still waiting for the rest that I purchased (think I purchased one of everything on the spiritualized website).

Is it wrong to not care about work right now and continuously loop the album throughout the day? Well I am.

Great articles. This (IMHO) is an incredible album. I just want to give Jason a big hug.

very true. as had Dylan's, way before Time Out Of Mind :) but they don't want to let that get in the way of a good angle!

Songs In A&E particularly had issues of mortaility and existential angst way before this one!
