New Godspeed LP out 31st March

wow! I like how they play their cards close to their chest. this appears to be a recording of the 40 min track Behemoth that they have been playing live. I really like the excerpt even if it's nothing new from them per se.

Very enjoyable thus far. Getting a wonderful Earth-like vibe from the first part.

Yeah I agree- it's definitely in the same vein as Ascend...
they have become more traditionally rocky as they've gone on. less minimalism, less voice samples and atmospherics.
this album does rock like a mother though. and the droney bit in the middle sounds great too. nice dark spluttering guitars and then it's back into the rocking.

I've heard the Earth comparison a few times now! not a bad thing for sure

Listening again now and, although i never picked up on the Earth thing at first, its pretty evident. Main thing for me and certainly part of my overall love for them is the cinematic strings they seem to do so well. When they get going they just transcend simple songs. That gutteral broken tone to the second track is also great... the thicker than thick bass notes... you can almost feel every vibration. The third track starts almost EAR like... just layering texture over and over until its a blizzard of sound which bleeds very nicely into the last one which fires up the Earth tones and strings again before rising and rising until its just a whirlwind of strings, riffs and drums.

I do kinda miss the field recordings/samples a little as i felt they worked so well on some of the earlier recordings, not so much the interview parts but the background sounds. They helped paint a picture for their soundtracks, but i appreciate that was back before their hiatus and bands move on.

Only downside is I'm now in the mood to see them live. Hope they pass through soon.

yeah agree with pretty much everything you've said there Laz. they seem to have tightened everything up and become more of a traditionally rocky band since they came back. I do miss the really quiet and atmospheric bits but this new stuff is damn effective when you want a direct hit of Godspeed.

I am seeing them live in Manchester in a couple of weeks so will report back!

Giving it yet another listen, this time at higher volume. Man, what an epic piece of work! As well as those EAR-ish tones in track 3 Laz mentioned, I'm really loving the Spacemen 3-esque repeater effect underpinning the build into the final part. Much love for the growling, roaring guitar tones and Sophie's soaring violin lines as well. This album really rocks like the proverbial beast. Superb stuff! I think I might well have to put Allelujah! on afterwards, as well. Oh, that section in "Mladic" that sounds like a death metal riff on Stereolab's "Jenny Ondiolone"

This live show is outstanding. I increased the volume a bit to make it a bit more audible and its just sounds immense!

Thanks or posting this. Sounding great so far.

I reallylike the new album, too. It's more rocky and drone based, but still has thoe classic GY!BE moments of bleak splendour.

I had exactly the same thought. Definitely channeling their inner Dylan Carlson there.

I'm probably going to be at the Liverpool gig in October. The MCR gig earlier in the year was tremendous.
