Spiritualized Glastonbury Live 27th BBC Radio 6 + Video

Post by evan:) »

Stuart Maconie: Glastonbury Live show starts 21.00.
Glastonbury, 2015
Stuart presents live music from the festival, including Spiritualized, John Hopkins, La Roux, Suede, Kanye West and Mavis Staples.

They play 21.30 - 22.30 so maybe a few tunes.

Listen live online http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music

Watching TV pictures tonight forgot how vast that festival is.

I'm sure you'll be able to watch Spz's set from the BBC website. On their Glasto coverage you can pretty much watch the entire sets on all of the main stages, Park Stage included. I watched the SFA Park Stage headline set last night and they were great :D

That slot is usually a "secret" band who play early on the Friday to properly open the festival, it's quite a high profile position on the bill. Blondie did it last year I think.

Kanye coverage will start slightly later than live on BBC 2, I'm just going to record that and watch it after Spiritualized. Hopefully see the Mothership set as well somehow, possibly on the iplayer later.

Ladies and Gentlemen we have the Spiritualized 2015 predictable festival setlist ...
Here It Comes (The Road, Let's Go)
Lord Let It Rain on Me
Electricity
Shine a Light
Electric Mainline
She Kissed Me (It Felt Like a Hit)
Oh Baby
Rated X
Soul on Fire... (maybe J thinks it will get become a better song if it played enough times... it won't
Walkin' with Jesus

At least they played with more enthusiasm than at Primavera...

I agree w/ the sentiment from (my old buddy?) scraecrowz. Familiarity breeds contempt.

Hey Jane?
Sweet Talk?
Baby I'm just a fool?

Even two, even 1, newer seiece would be nice.
It's just a nostalgia trip atm. The one new song, at the start, suggests a similarly singer songwriter direction on 'progressing nicely'..

You forgot 'Come Together'. Same set as Dublin several weeks ago. Sounded OK through the stereo. Momentum killing Oh Baby/Rated X mystifies me. I'm not sure I like the current take on WWJ much either.....

I'm very worried about Liverpool in September if they stick with this.....

Shine a light -> Electric Mainline -> She Kissed Me was a great run, but yeah, Oh Baby -> Rated X killed that momentum.

Firstly, thanks to everyone for sorting out a decent copy to watch. I was out at a gig last night so missed their performance and just watching it now. Does anyone mind if I share it on my Psychedelic Drone Rock Facebook page?

Thoughts so far:-

[*] I don't recognise the drummer, bassist or keyboard player (the drummer did remind me a tad of Matt Berry though!). Is this the band that's played all the dates so far this year.

[*] Good to see them playing once the sun had gone down and the lightshow seemed pretty impressive.

[*] Electricity....Shines A Light...Electric Mainline....She Kissed Me section was pretty intense. Good to see the drummer really giving it some welly.

[*] Can certainly do with less slower tracks. If they stick to this set at Liverpool its really not going to cut the mustard. Think it worked for this show though to be honest. And I've always loved Oh Baby.

[*] Surprised to see that they played nothing off of Huh?....Hey Jane in particular. He really does love filling a set with Amazing Grace material though doesn't he....4 out of the 11 tracks here.

[*] Liked his "Spaceman +" guitar stap 8)

[*] It certainly wasn't a terrible set, especially when they hit the highs (Shine A Light/Electric Mainline/Come Together). I think we all want a little something more though. I really can't see J changing it for Liverpool though...he is a creature of habit after all.

Not feeling this at all. Combination of the ballad heavy set/and they just don't soar like they used to. Admittedly a relatively new line up.
The Furnace at Liverpool is a room that is crying out for a Glasto 92-esque head fuck of a set. No place at all for these ballads. We shall see. Not looking likely though.

Jason Pierce is a 'Drudge Pusher'.

Best thing about that gig was WWJ, i'm liking the way they're playing it out now, much closer to the Spacemen I think.

The rest of it? I dunno, it just doesn't excite me anymore. Competent. Perfunctory. Is that what I want to associate with Spiritualized? Even when they're making a noise it all sounds a bit flat.

After a brief period of excitement around SHSL it all seems to have regressed to the dark days of the noughties for me.

Thought the Super Furries set the night before was far more enjoyable.

I really have to agree with you there.

But during the last tour the set list seemed to be really fluid with new songs appearing all that time. I expected this spate of festival shows to be aiming to heavily whet appetites for the new album. Instead they have reverted to a setlist from around 2004 and they seem to me more like a heritage act than a going concern.

I think we have to assume that the rumour of September for the new album is looking very optimistic.

Sadly I agree, I was gutted I missed out on tickets for the Leeds show, now Im not so worried. I know they're in the middle of recording an album but really, Jason is always saying in interviews he doesn't over rehearse stuff, he hardly did anything for the LAGWAFIS shows as he wants spontaneity so they could mix the set up, rehearse some different songs in soundcheck? This set really isn't going anywhere and the worst thing about it is he'll stick to it for the forseeable future. Its a weird start to the set as it doesnt seem to get going, the old way with Hey Jane was really nice as you had this little intro with Here it Comes then this huge sounding song to follow it. they know how to play it as they played it at Hyde Park last year (with a different bass player and keys - but the current bass player toured with the last album so he knows how to play it). The fact is If you're going on tour then you can rehearse whatever songs you want so it seems like a very clear choice to play these particular ones. Real shame as we all know they can take it somewhere special and for whatever reason they\re not right now.

I don't want to come across as a 'hater' but I think after seeing the band 15-20 times I know what they are capable of.

Maybe he's waiting until September to unveil the new material at the Brudenell show. Even though I don't really get the current setlist, I'm not going to lose faith. The prospect of a new Spiritualized album is always exciting.

^^^ Spent about 15 years preaching that line until I realised that those days were not coming back.

Bliss. My first Glastonbury and they were mind blowing. I'll always remember the smelliest crusty i've ever encountered (complete with dog on a string) standing beside me and offering me a toke on his spliff. I declined  The following year they were even better. It was 1994 that was the beginning of the downward trajectory for me...they were good but didn't quite scale the heights. All further Glasto appearances just left me frustrated, but looking back I was probably just expecting too much (with the exception of Acoustic Mainlines where I wasn't expecting much at all).

With their regular gigs I was probably too harsh on them during the Pure Phase and L&G tours but they had blown me away so much from 1991-93 that when subsequent gigs didn't reach the same peaks I was left disappointed. Always remember thinking at the time that if it had been another band i'd have thought it was amazing, but the bar had been set so high in the early years that it was impossible for me to accept that every Spiritualized gig wasn't like that.

By the noughties complete and utter disillusionment had set in but I couldn't stop myself from attending, just on the off chance of something happening y'know. It wasn't until the A&E tour that I reconciled myself with the whole thing and then a miracle occurred with SHSL and I got excited by them again. Obviously not at the same level as the early years but definitely the best gigs and record they'd done since L&G.

Anyways, not quite sure what the point of this post is or if there even is a point...i'm just rambling i guess..

Some pretty harsh comments, I just caught the last three tracks on Saturday night and watching the full set just now, just pretty pleased to be able to see & hear a BBC production of Spiritualized live.

Not really sure why there`s so much negativity TBH, at least three somewhat more casual Spiritualized fans I know tweeted me after they finished with comments ranging from `Immense` to `blown away` , they loved it.

i think the problem with the band is that they are older than they used to be, how dare they not be the same band they were 30 years ago!

It was a tricky one I'll grant you. Thank fuck Spiritualized were not clashing with Paloma Faith though, that would have been heartbreaking...

Which perfectly sums up my feelings towards the majority of the grumpy old men on here who habitually hark back to 1992 or whatever and infect discussions like this... fuck that. I was 12 years old in 1992 and have no respect for that kind of nostalgic reminiscing.

You know what? Thank fuck it's not 1992.

I had an extremely challenging week for various reasons, and the post about Spiritualized being played live via the BBC at Glasto made my day - and certainly made my night, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the set from a crappy laptop: perfect timing for the gig, the sun setting through the show was awesome in itself...

The whole set ebbed and flowed, and the band are tight as. Johnny Aitken and the bass player were right on it, and so good hearing Jason and Doggen doing the dual Jaguar thing.

'Oh Baby' and 'Rated X' may not be my pick of their catalogue but hearing them live around the Amazing Grace tour made me really get into them.

I think from a gig that slowly builds from the ever-evolving 'Here It Comes' (sounding way more epic now) into some progressively more intense stuff ('Electric Mainline' ) those two tracks would be a welcome cooling off, particularly if you were actually there at the festival and on the requisite Glasto enhancers...

I also would suggest that unlike everyone who has posted here, watching this gig from some giant flatscreen TV, I'd rather hear the opinions of anyone who attended the gig. A girl I know texted to say that Spiritualized were the highlight of Saturday. Also loved the crowd shot during 'Soul on Fire' to see these people jiving away, high and happy.

Anyone who doubts Jason has stalled creatively only need to hear that compilation bootleg I made from the US 2013 shows, new songs every night, and some incredibly frazzled space rock epics amongst them. Guess he's holding them until the new album is out...

Also please understand my ideal Spiritualized festival tracklist would be an hour of churning 'Electric Phase/Cop Shoot Cop...' chaos, with a solitary run through 'Always Forgetting With You' midway. Nobody is gonna be dancing to that though... well, maybe I would.

Also - is anyone going to comment on how healthy Jason is looking at this point? No chair required. You all know what this guy has been through and even being here is a miracle in itself... his vocals are better than ever.

"GO SPACEMAN!"

Best thing about that gig was WWJ, i'm liking the way they're playing it out now, much closer to the Spacemen I think.
That is a superb line actually

Hey, pedantically enough Spiritualzied have been playing WWJ in a similar fashion since late on the epic 2012 tour: the Sydney Opera House gig had a fantastic take on it. It's since grown and gone full circle unto the, yep Spacemen 3 style thing they have now. Beautiful. Jason plays these gossamer notes, while Doggen plays some incredibly restrained noise. The best bit is the girls joining in and the absolutely elongated part "Oh listen sweet lord..." and everything drops away and time seems to stand still.

Wow. I'm going to listen to it again....

PS: The 'country shuffle' version from 2008 was awesome too!

I reckon on a candid day I could have written this myself word for word. First Glastonbury - 92, check, Spiritualized equally mind blowing 93 - check, but diminishing returns thereafter - check. I guess there is a reason why I listen to LGM more than all the other albums put together.

Perhaps I am just over familiar with those songs but the set felt steady and workman like to me. Not what I ever hope for from Spiritualized. I mean they have been doing that opening combo of [Quiet Song] + Shine a light + Electricity + Electric Mainline since at least 1998! Ok, it wasn't quite in the same order but all the same It doesn't looks particularly fresh does it? Jason is always talking about wanting to play new songs and keep developing the sound. Its seems odd not to be playing Hey Jane, Heading for the Top, I am what I am, for instance.

If you think about it in 1993 at Glastonbury they did Shine a light -> Electric Mainline and closed the set with WWJ. Twenty-three years later and the three tunes are still the cornerstone of the set.

I rearely listen to Amazing Grace, Songs in A+E or Sweet Heart, Sweet Light. I made a point of playing all three last night. They are all very fine albums, but nowhere near the LGM and PP records IMHO. Including CDs, I own about 4000 albums. The Spacemen 3 and first two Spiritualized and Spectrum albums get played incredibly regularly (along with a small number of other LPs). I never tire of them. The same cannot be said of the later material. It is simply not crucial to me. Live, they have been hit and miss since 1997 IMHO, but particularly so since 2004. Having said all this, I still look forward to each and every gig and the spectular treat of a new bit of vinyl or plastic!

I have only seen one song from the set (Soul on Fire which was posted on the band's Twitter). I agree with BZA, Spaceman looks in good shape and happy, which pleased me to see. Good to see he treated himself to a Jazzmaster too.

Considering some of the crud they show on BBC, I'm happy the band are getting some coverage. I'm glad one of my faves is still going after so long and not doing the same thing he was 23 years ago. Just looking at a still picture of The Who these days makes me shudder.

If anything, it is making me wonder what the hell the new album will sound like. The few new songs he's played are vaguely singer-songwriter as per the last two or three records. Yet he's working with a name producer for the first time, and the last song he recorded (the Bridge Song-a classic definitely in my top five spz songs) was so unique and unlike anything he's put on an album for years. It is very interesting to see where it will go next. I anticipate a new album full show like he did with SHSL in London months before it was released. A release this year would be a treat.

Heisenberg - go and download that comp of various tunes from the 2013 tour that is in the bootlegs thread - if unable to do so PM me.

Some incredible stuff there, recorded in early stages through compromised means (non-soundboard) yet most of that stuff is incredible - of course there a few 'ballads' but also some primeval rock and roll shit that rocks my world. Abstract and electric...

2006 the Acoustic Mainlines tour started - into 2007 I think

The Edinburgh show which I attended remains the most ecstatic gig I've ever attended - the good vibes there could have spun the earth of it's axis.

By contrast the Xmas show at the Union Chapel - complete with an awesome rendition of 'Silent Night' - is fantastic as the crowd are near silent.

These shows should be available on here in the bootleg threads - if not, PM me!

I don't get the desperation to go back to 1992. That was the band at a certain time and this is another time. It does seem that when the set list isn't fitting with people's expectations a few just give up and consign Jason Pierce to the 'not as good as he used to be' bin. A couple of the accounts of Austin did just that, and now the Glasto set is getting similar treatment.

I have learned never to write Spiritualized off. I've seen off shows, I've seen shows where I didn't think the set list did the band justice. But I have also seen shows that have taken me by surprise and my head has been ripped off. The golden era for the absolute greatest Spiritualized gig I ever saw wasn't 1992 but actually 1991. But that was the most incredible musical experience I have ever had, so I don't continually expect to have the same experience at every show Jason plays. But the last Spiritualized show I saw - in Holmfirth almost 2 years ago - is up there with not only the best Spiritualized gigs I've seen, but gigs by any other band too.

To have been as elevated as I was at the Picturedrome was something I hadn't expected. It was the best I'd seen them in almost 20 years and I loved every minute. That means the next Spiritualized show I see might not reach those heights. But on the other hand maybe it will? Jason is someone I've given up trying to predict - he does things his own way and when that way hits my sweet spot there are very few musicians on the planet anywhere near as good.

So for me I won't give up. I can't wait til Leeds. And even if he chooses to play a few slower numbers which I might like less than other songs, I know that something incredible could be just around the corner.

Thanks BZA. Downloading it right now. How did I miss this? I'm usually pretty on the ball when it comes to your brilliant uploads. Feel Like Goin' Home? No way! Thanks again!

I remember hearing a version of 'A song', maybe from 2012 (I could be wrong on this) at London Roundhouse. Mind-blowing. I was excited for the new album even back then. Let's hope that type of ferocity makes the cut on the new record.

Not to mention it was a completely different band.
Interesting how this forum has changed over the years.
It used to be the:
LGM & PP crowd versus the LAGWAFIS forward crowd.
Now it is the 1990's crowd versus the just let Jason create his own art crowd.
Thank god he is still here given his recent bouts of illness.
