Spoiler alert:

It's an almost 17-minute instrumental with a lovely hummed melody from J and some gospel singer cooing in the background. Whooshing synths and buzzing guitars abound, and it's bloody gorgeous all round :D

Kind of sounds like one of those songs that you say to yourself I wish this would go on longer except this actually does.

Liking this a lot! It would make for a nice side of vinyl if Spiritualized were still releasing EPs. Has a nice "Lay Back In The Sun", good dope, good fun vibe. Lovely. Hope the new LP shares the same DNA...

There's a Soundcloud add on for Firefox that adds a "download" button to the web page. It downloads as an 128kbps mp3, but better than nothing.

Forget this - link still valid!

Anyway this is truly fantastic stuff - the most interesting and entertaining debates and chat on here for a long time, and out of nowhere appears this monolithic slab of spaced-out goodness.

Just saying, if Jason can throw down something like this for a gents fashion show who knows what will be on the new album?

New J/Spz music?

Post by BzaInSpace »

This new epic track sounds fuck all like LGM by the way - the initial sound is way harder and dense and is a bit like the recent remixes Jason has done - the Suicide-esque pulsing drum machine with the onslaught of particularly heavy guitars isn't so much 'Stooges For Airports', but 'Stooges For Footage Of Sharks Ripping Apart Their Prey'...

Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing this. To me in sounds like an instrumental as his remixes rarely have drums in (I guess the studio costs don't make it worthwhile). I had a very, very brief listen to sections with one headphone at work and thought it was maybe another drone project he'd been offered but how wrong can you be! The layering and drifting in and out of instruments is beautiful. When did that acoustic guitar come in? I hope this doesn't end, good it's dropped back
In again. Dense, really well produced and still really organic sounding. Paraphrasing what Bza said in another thread: never mind 1992 - this is where it's at!

I worry that it's a clever magician's mis-direction, in respect of the forthcoming album...

It clearly has little to nothing in common with the new material we heard last year. How does he square that circle?

First post for a long while.

Dear God, that's something special. The first time I've got goosebumps from any piece of music for a while (the last was "The Bridge Song, natch).

I'm still not sure this is a blueprint for the next album though. J's stuff outside of the Spz brand is often removed from the band's "sound" at the time. From memory, J himself has alluded to the fact that there's a type & feel to Spiritualized songs that means other music he's making wouldn't fit within a Spz album.

Here's hoping though. The brief appearance of a Melodica is a treat. Could that be Youth's dub influence beginning to show?

it's a good point. he often does superbly interesting and experimental extra curricular stuff- Spring Heel Jack, solo improv, the Mister Lonely soundtrack, these one off tracks. then the Spz records are a bit more traditional and within certain parameters.
it's almost as if he's got too strict an aesthetic for Spiritualized.

Sad Days Lonely Nights was better than much of Amazing Grace too.

another band with the same problem are Wilco. various members do some amazing side projects in the free jazz world, or Jeff Tweedy's more leftfield work with Loose Fur. then the recent albums are mostly dadrock with the members seeming to rein everything in.

To me it sounds like a Spz track minus the vocals. As in, the places in the tracks where it drops down a level sound like space for the vocals to sit in. I'd be surprised if that wasn't on the album. He was offered 2 grand to do that drone which turned into the bridge song - as in he was going g to do a drone and it turned into a song. This piece/song is 16 minutes long. That's a hell of a lot of work for a remix. The structure is incredible and the production is top drawer. As I mentioned earlier in the thread - live drums - which cost money to lay down. They also have a similar low down in the mix sound to some of the last album which I really like. It relies on the power of those melodies (which have hooks so large you could hang your coat on) and tremolo guitar underpinning it. It reminds me a little of the remix that turned into electric mainline which name escapes me right now. Someone mentioned it doesn't resemble any of the live tracks they were playing last tour and I had the same thought, but he's always changed stuff when it comes to putting it down on tape. As I see it playing that material live was him playing around and finding a way to make it work.

And if I'm wrong and this is something he's done in an afternoon then think how amazing the album is going to be! A

Thankfully I understand Jason's music well enough to know the next Spiritualized album won't contain clichéd beer commercial lead guitars, even though he's not as good as Nels Cline...

Seriously though - I think Simon makes an excellent point about the amount of hard work evident in this new piece of music. Last time I recall hearing about so much effort was the bountiful 1997 - 2001 period. The natural evolution of Let It Come Down combining experimental sonic textures with the rich tapestry of orchestrated song structure sounds like a heavenly prospect.

Listening to it through proper speakers and its superb.

Incredibly frustrating that he can still pull out these fantastic tunes (This one, Bridge Song, some of the unreleased stuff of the past few years, Hey Jane, I Am What I Am, Heading For The Top) but persists with filling albums with ballads instead.

I remember an interview post-SHSL where Spaceman said he was interested in going in a more electronic direction, and that seems to be where he's gone. Given his comments and these two songs, it's likely that the new record is like this. I love SHSL, but the Bridge Song and this one are the first one's that sound like Spiritualized since Ladies and Gents. It's like the more traditional music he's been making has been his experimental phase, now he's back to making solid psychedelic music.

I used to be snooty about baseball caps, but I've come to appreciate their logic & design esp for the game they were made for. The sun is an amazing star, but sometimes it's too busy & baseball caps help counter that distraction when it's unwelcome.
Tho I'm sure you're well aware of the function of hats & their various forms..
& not that I wear them btw.. I'm not really a hat guy. More sun cream/+ glasses.

Never been a baseball hat wearer.

These days I proudly sport an old mans flat cap ala Brian Johnson, probably more often than is strictly necessary.

how the hell did we get onto this subject? being follically challenged, I am quite partial to a hat. but baseball caps just don't suit me at all.

going back to this new song- lets not get our hopes up. if it's gonna be on the new album, why is it under the name of Jason Pierce rather than Spiritualized?
and many of the other new songs already played still fit into the ballad category. the only one which really floats my boat is Let's Dance.
'A Song' is a tune though.

I at least hope the album literally soundslike this tune though, or The Bridge Song. the production is really nice on both.

I like that clip. I'd like to think of myself as a striding across the moors kind of cap wearer rather than sitting in coffee shops drinking frapuchinos.

for spz album I'm hoping for sounds like what we've heard released so far. I'm loving the new track, and always together with you and the cut copy remix were fantastic.

I'm sure we've heard that Jason has loads of songs to play with and that he's looking for something sounding completely different and these songs are different from anything we've heard in years so if this is a return to a more spacey sound then I'm massively excited.

The sun is amazing tho. It's carrying everyone of us.
We're sure going to miss it when it's gone.

Agreed!

Anyway I've been playing this Kenzo Soundtrack for the last week whenever I can... it's just the best.

I kinda wish it had a title though as it deserves something better than the above.

It's almost like a distillation of all the Spiritualized sounds into one mad epic track - the tremeloes, the free-form guitars, the synths, 'Lay Back In The Sun', the motorik beats... and the melodica?

I also love somewhere near the end when it all drops out there is a faint astronaut bleep.

Really the whole thing is some rush though, it's kicks off and it's like a rocket in that it keeps building in energy and momentum. Truly spine-tingling stuff. Hats off Jason, and great to see a lot of love for this from all.

I'd be surprised if that wasn't on the album. He was offered 2 grand to do that drone which turned into the bridge song - as in he was going to do a drone and it turned into a song.
I see some similarities in this and the Bridge Song too - that looped vocal thing is on here too - and as someone mentioned - leaning back to 'O Superman'. Agreed on the production too Simon. Dynamic!

Even if it's not on the album - surely it can't just be some throwaway thing? - I hope it's officially released in some form or another.
