Listening to vinyl backwards

Post by bbbhenko »

This is perhaps a wierd topic, I don't know... 8)

I recently bought a new turntable (an Audio Technica AT-LP120USBHC) and it has buttons for choosing Forward or Reverse mode for the turntable. I have never before owned a turntable that could do this, and I'm not really sure what to make out of it, but perhaps it could be used for an interesting listening session... My only fear is that it might somehow damage either the record or the needle?? I guess that this is an irrational fear, but perhaps someone knows more than me about this here? :)

Great Thread idea! I have a similar setting on my turntable and I used to listen to stuff backwards all the time - particualy good when mixingDJing. A particular favorite record to put on backwards at parties was the 'Royal Wedding - Charles and Diana' I picked up from a charity shop. The priest talking and hymns backwards - sounded so odd.

some needles (stylus) will not handle backward play very well.

DJ carts are made for that. I'd tread lightly.

It you are using an SL1200 and an appropriate cartridge (e.g. MM designed for DJs with low cost interchangeable stylus) then fire away. It is easy to find the cost of a replacement stylus. If you have an MC cartridge, or a decent MM then I would forget about it.

You are Our Dark Lord Chris Morris and I claim my five pounds...!

Hey, on a serious note, just dub your records digitally through audacity or whatever and the use the handy reverse function - saves fucking about with your equipment and needles and that.

I can confirm though, as those right-wing Christian fundamentalists always insisted, that playing 'Stairway To Heaven' played backward does in fact contain a sinister invocation of Satan himself...

Or does it? Probably helps if you're fucking bonkers, I dunno.

That is next level, Thanks!!
and cheers BZA! High praise indeed to have even a passing comparison to the living legend that is Chris Morris. Talking of which, has there ever been a C.Morris thread on here??
