Still In a Dream: A Story of Shoegaze (boxset)

Post by angelsighs »

always thought this whole scene needed a boxset. someone's finally done it, and they have wisely played fast and loose with the term, covering ambient, drone, spacerock etc all under that banner. Spiritualized and Spectrum feature. I honestly can't think of a band they have obviously missed.

This looks amazing. A few bands I don't recognize but many of the usual suspects...and Majesty Crush!
Muscles, will you sign my box?

What!!?? The Spacemen and Spiritualized are nowhere even close to what I consider "shoegazing"'to be.... That's tantamount to calling them goth or some shit!!

Seriously though - loads of stuff I've never heard before. Looks like an interesting comp.

Proper 4AD style artwork and all!

MBV might as well be on there also. Weird how they are not - Loveless sorta is the instigator for a lot of this music, no?

Spiritualized may not be shoegaze but they are still fairly close to that sound.. not a million miles away. soft, dreamy vocals. oodles of reverb. sound familiar?
as I said, they have wisely been fairly broad with the definition. there was definitely something in the water around the turn of the 90s where guitar bands got all dreamy and noisy. they've included some of the dancier and more ambient stuff too (Bark Psychosis, AR Kane)

the only obvious omission is MBV, that's either because 1) it was too obvious or 2) they couldn't get permission?

no verve either as far as i can see. i don't buy the 'too obvious' line, reckon it's more about getting approval.

I didn't look that close at every disc but I would say almost none of disc 5 are shoegaze bands.

Check the comments- label says they couldn't get clearance for MBV or Stereolab.

Ugh... This is a tough one for me. As I had started something similar that was going to have a book etc...

It was something that I started a couple of years ago and just started to write all the plans etc.

Oh well.

The ttitle of this box set is so misleading.
The Story of Space Rock maybe. Just not as marketable apparently.

Sure.

A friend of mine had put out a book and cd/lp collection about the drum and bass scene here in the UK. So, I spoke to him how he went about getting photographs, people to contribute to the story and of course the music. It's a really nice project!!!

As of now it's just about 30 pages of notes, contacts, music ideas, and about 200 images in a file. I wanted to create something the movie could not do. Sadly, things have taken so long due to work and taking care of a family that I had not taken it to the next level. Maybe i'll try over xmas to sort it out. When I met RIDE sans Mark for that intimate talk last month I had seen and heard so much more than anyone has ever spoken about that 'era'.

So, you never know. I need to sit and really think about the next steps to honest.

I understand, and have often commented on the difficulty of the "categorization" of Music, (or just as often, the mis-categorization of same); but regardless of how I might question the point, to have such a nice slice of what is an important era of Music to me with selections that I generally like, this looks like it may be a really nice set that I intend to obtain.

Over the years I have been lucky enough to hear or read about, (Thanks angelsighs!); or see ads for, or just be fortunate and happen across, in a proper, complete type of Record Store; Wonderful Box Sets. The Majority of these are on vinyl; some are MULTIPLE 12" LP Box Sets, and a few are Beautifully Boxed in Hardwood, Velvet and sometimes Leather, in that Special Classical Music Style of the 1920's, or the Heavily and Protective Box Sets of the style of the 1980's.

I look forward to seeing how this set is packaged.

An interesting opinion piece on `shoegazing` and who killed it? With quotes from liner notes from this box set so I`m assuming it was inspired by it, posted on The Quietus site today, diminishing returns and circumstances if its the chart bothering end your speaking of, the more experimental end continued along in the margins/underground untroubled,
