Angel Olsen has announced details of her new album, ‘My Woman’, which will be released on September 2 via Jagjaguwar. It follows 2014’s ‘Burn Your Fire for No Witness’.

As well as the details of the album, the Missouri-born singer has outlined plans for her forthcoming tour, which will start in the US in July before heading to Europe in September. You can see the full list of dates at the bottom of the page.

Last week (June 1) Olsen revealed a video trailer for the first material from ‘My Woman’, entitled ‘Intern’.

The album is produced by Justin Raisen, and features guest guitarist Seth Kauffman alongside Olsen’s regular band, which is made up of bassist Emily Elhaj, drummer Joshua Jaeger, and guitarist Stewart Bronaugh.

Olsen says her forthcoming album is about “the complicated mess of being a woman. I’m definitely using scenes that I’ve replayed in my head, in the same way that I might write a script and manipulate a memory to get it to fit. But I think it’s important that people can interpret things the way that they want to.”

‘My Woman’ tracklist:

1 Intern
2 Never Be Mine
3 Shut Up Kiss Me
4 Give It Up

I'll definitely be buying this. Her last album was great. I listened to the new single and dug it.

Just got my download via Amazon. The first half of the album hasn't impressed me much. The production is too lo-fi and the songwriting isn't great, aside from track 1, "Intern," which I think was the first single. Mostly it sounds like she's forcing it. Bummer. The second half/side of the album, though, is glorious. I wonder if it was recorded in a different session and/or at a different studio. I'll be curious to look at the credits when my vinyl copy arrives tomorrow. Anyway, side 2 - so much atmosphere and intimacy. Really awesome. The songs are longer and stretch out elegantly. So, yeah, this is definitely a strange album. Curious what others will make of it.

I found a link of the album at the end of July and couldn't resist, so I've been listening to it a lot since then.

I liked 'Burn Your Fire...' a lot, but always found the second half to be a bit patchy. I think this one is a lot more even and builds to more to a satisfying conclusion. I'd agree that the 2nd half is a lot stronger than the 1st, but I tend to love albums that are structured that way. It would be nice if there were more songs like 'Intern' but I think that starting with 'Heart Shaped Face' the album gets better and better with each song and makes for a very satisfying listen.

She just released a really nice video for 'Sister' which I'd say is the centerpiece of the album. I think it might be a better sample of what the album has to offer than 'Intern' or 'Shut Up Kiss me'-

"Sister" is incredible. I love the way it goes all Fleetwood Mac in the middle. Definitely a new direction for Olsen.

I've been listening since 'Strange Cacti' came out- that one's really lo-fi and all of the songs are acoustic guitar and voice drenched in reverb. She's been moving away from that sad acoustic ballad type of sound. 'Halfway Home' has a lot of really dirgey, slow songs with sparse instrumentation that can be a bit melodramatic at times. It's got a few full band songs that really soar, though. Her voice on it is very unhinged, too- it seems on 'Burn Your Fire...' she started trying to explore more subtle ways of using her voice- those are the key differences to me. Something like 'Forgotten/Forgiven' or 'Hi-Five' seems like a very conscious shift into more of a hard-hitting rock band sound, a lot of what falls a little flat on 'Burn Your Fire...' is how forced some of the songs exploring that sound seem (at least to me).

Wow, totally unimpressed with this. Only made it to track 5 before I had to turn it off due to embarrassment (teenagers are the harshest critics). Sounds forced and contrived. The lo-fi production is shit as well.
Am I doing something wrong?

The second half of the album destroys the first half. If I were you, I would start with "Sister" and just listen to the last four songs on the album, two of which exceed the 7 minute mark. Honestly, to me side 2 sounds like a completely different album from side 1. Very strange. The production, songs and performances are so much better. I went back to day and listened to the first four songs and they're still not doing much for me, other than "Intern," which is alright. "Shut Up Kiss Me" is terrible. I can't believe she released that as a single.

I actually bought the CD on the strength of Sister and on recommendations from places such as this forum. Will follow your advice and listen to the second half.

it's a grower- the more i listen to it the more i like it- some songs haven't 'clicked' for me yet but i'm sure they will- keep at it, i beleive it is worth the time- even if we are the instant gratification generation. often i find albums i like straight away i bore of quite quckly (obvious exceptions), stick at it.

do you know the previous album 'burn your fire for no witness'?

oh and ps (edit) her voice is turning into something special now!

if you see the video and read how she wrote it as a snide comment on people who say she keeps changing then it makes a lot more sense. it's growing on me

recent convert to Angel Olsen. not heard the new one yet (apart from the singles- I agree that Sister is brilliant) I've definitely found her to be a grower. at first I was liking the voice, and a lot of the production and atmosphere, but the songs weren't quite there.. they revealed their charms on more listens.

is it me or is White Fire on the last album pure Leonard Cohen? I like her sound- it's a quite haunting mix of more intimate stuff like that but you can also tell she likes fifties pop too with twangy guitars- Shut Up Kiss Me isn't the deepest song out there but surely obvious to be chosen as the single?

Me too - I'm an even more recent convert, following the ecstatic sounding recommendations above.

'Sister' is absolutely incredible. Paul's Fleetwood Mac mention is absolutely spot on - it's like an epic Buckingham/Nicks outtake from 'Tusk' or something, just beautiful. :D

yeah Sister is a gorgeous song. not often I say this but the video is really good too. not much going on in it but the soft focus shots of LA give it a dreamy feel which fits well

Such a great album, really is. I'd easily put in my top 3 for the year. Her gig at Camden Koko a few weeks back was simply amazing.

Does anyone like Weyes Blood? Her new album "Front Row Seat To Earth" should appeal to fans of My Woman I reckon. It's from the folky side of life, influenced by that 60's/70's Laurel Canyon sound, nice lush arrangements and beautiful detail. Check it here https://weyesblood.bandcamp.com/album/f ... t-to-earth , great video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml_sZOWY6yU . I'm off to see her in a week or two in London.
