VU afterhours tapes

Post by The Dr »

anyone know anything about these?

The Velvet Underground
The Afterhours Tapes

The "Huge and Great, Afterhours Set" is a unofficial collection of tapes, originally edited by the Velvet Underground Appreciation Society. All tapes came with fully-printed covers with full info on the music inside. All comments are reprinted from the V.U.A.S. list.

VU : THIRD LP-ALT. MIXES, ODDITIES; LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA, 1970 (pt. 1)
This is the remixed 3rd LP, with the two guitar version of "Some Kinda Love". Also : Carol Lou Trio : "Afterhours", the promo 45 ad for the 3rd LP, and swell live versions of "I'm Set Free", "WGO", "Cool It", "Jane", and one of the two-known live versions of "Murder Mystery", (as part of "Sister Ray"). Excellent studio sound/good live sound.
VU COVER VERSIONS AND TRIBUTES I
VU LIVE-BOSTON TEA PARTY (JAN. 10, 1969)
The Songs in a great set, at their favorite place to play: H, Move Right In, Set Free, Run, Waiting, WGO, Can't Stand It, Candy Says, Beginning, WL, Pale, Ray. Sound : good+ : "Not wide dynamic range, but instruments and vocals are very clear and sharp". True.
CALE LIVE IN BOSTON (OCT. 19,1982), PLUS ASSORTED OTHER RARE CALE LIVE RECORDINGS
VU LIVE : LA CAVE, CLEVELAND (OCT 2, 1968) PLUS GREAT COVERS
Live crankin' in a legendary club : WGO, Waiting, Foggy, H, Jesus, Venus, Beginning, Ray. Some of this overlaps with the live '68 boot, which is on tape 10. Sound : good.
REED/CALE/NICO LIVE PARIS 72, PLUS RARE SOLO SIDES
Here is the excellent acoustic concert the three did (their last collaboration). Also many hard to get Cale, Reed and Nico studio and live tracks. Sound : E to G+.
VU LIVE : SECOND FRET, PHILADELPHIA (EARLY 1970)
WL, Jane, Over You, Foggy, R&R, Kinda, Age, Candy, Head Held, Train, Oh! Sweet Nuthin' (only known live recording), Ray, Waiting. Tape is continued on #1. Sound : good.
NICO : LIVE AT CBGB'S (NYC, MARCH 1979), PLUS RARITIES
VU : DEMOS AND RARE EARLY RECORDINGS
Here's 17 of the '66 to '69 demos in their original acetate mixes (much different in feel than VU or Another View). Plus these early rarities : 2 songs live from the EPI film, Noise, Loop, Index, More. Note : the 6 1966 demos are presented here at the correct speed for the first time anywhere. Sound : good to fair.
VU BOOTLEGS : "1966" AND "LIVE '68"
2 classic bootlegs well preserved here : 1966 is the live EPI instrumentals with Nico 4 November 1966, and Live '68 hails from La Cave and packs these punches : WGO, Move Right In, Can't Stand It, Foggy, H (with Cale). Sound : VG, VG-.
LOU REED : LIVE CHRONOLOGY (VOL 1)
SOUNDTRAX EXTRAX
Rare scree from the silver screen : Hedy (1965, with Reed, Cale's screaming guitar), Cale music from Caged Heat (1974), and Who Am I This Time? (1982), and Lou's dialogue from Jimi Hendrix (1973), One-Trick Pony (1980), and Get Crazy (1983). Sound : good to fair.
THE VU & NICO, WL/WH : MONO MIXES
Sterling Morrison says they spent all their time on the mono mix of the 1st LP, and that the stereo is inferior. We agree the mono is the way to go. Also on board : WL/WH, a deadly overload in mono. One channel of "Sister Ray"? Pow! Sound : E.
MIXED BAG O' RARITIES
Lots of lots, from Lou's 1957 Jades 45, Pickwick trax (1964), 1971 acoustic demos, to 1971 Nico on the BBC, live post-VU lou (1972), the australian "VU", and Moe's Paris 1942 band (1982). Sound : E to G.
METAL MACHINE MUSIC PLUS
INTERVIEW EXCERPTS
VU : LIVE & LOWDOWN I
Great liveness, from 1969 to the last VU in '73. The incredible 'guitar amp' Ray is the centerpiece, there's mucho great, rare live trax around it : Run, Candy, Ferryboat, WGO, BADS, To Much, Oh Mickey, Little Jack, WGO, H, Oh Jim, Let It Shine. Sound : E to G+.
MISCELLANEOUS RARITIES
Much : VU live '66 (Chelsea Hotel soundtrack), Nico with neuronium, Cale live '76 (with Lou - only time they worked together from Paris '72 to drella), Lou live on italian TV in '83, and his work with Nils Lofgren and Kiss. Sound : E to VG.
VU COVERS AND TRIBUTES II
NICO INTERVIEWS
EPI LIVE 4 NOV 1966
Dreams come true here, with the complete concert EQ'd and speed corrected for the first time! It's all here - The VU & Nico, their only live recording together - the 7 songs, and the long instrumentals they called "Melody Laughter". You know how screwly the speed was on the songs - even the new CD boots are wrong. Hear it the right way. Sound : VG.
VELVET UNDERGROUND 1990
The reunion that no one thought would happen. Here's the complete show from the Foundation Cartier in France : 5 Drella songs from Lou & John, and a great recording of the VU doing "Heroin ". Plus : interviews with all four before and after the big event. Sound : E to VG.
LOU REED & JOHN CALE : DRELLA IN PROGRESS
100 minutes tape of both shows from their historic first live concerts together since 1972. Recorded at St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn in January 1990 as a prelude to the December 1990 BAM shows, these shows have very different versions of some Drella songs. Sound : VG.
LOU REED & JOHN CALE (& MOE TUCKER) : SONGS FOR DRELLA
3 Dec 1990. The final show of their emotional four night run at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. This is the complete show, with Moe coming out for the only encore of the series, to do "Pale Blue Eyes". Sound : VG.
SEARCHIN' FOR MY MAINLINE
Two tapes full of the landmark boot box. Long out of print, Mainline is the finest record of the history of the Velvet Underground. It traces the history of the band from 1966 up to Sterling's video duet with John in 1986. What also makes this indispensable is the sound - it's boosted well over any other boot or tape. Sound : VG.
SWEET SISTER RAY
The other indispensable VU boot of recent years, this captures the band doing the long-rumored 40 minute hypnotic "Sweet Sister Ray" intro to "Sister Ray". It follows that with a great loud/soft "Ray" from Philadelphia in 1970, and bums the house down with the guitar amp "Sister Ray" from the Tea party 15 Jan. 1969. Sadly, the vinyl is all gone, but this tape carries all the punch. Sound : VG- to VG.
JOHN CALE : THE FALKLAND SUITES
THE BEST OF THE POST-LOU VU
What was left of the VU after Lou left ? Quite a good band, actually. There are several tapes and records around to attest to that, and this is a collection of all the best of those live performances, showing that the various lineups with Moe, Sterling, Doug, Billy, Willie and Walter could still rock. Sound : VG to G+.
THEATRE OF ETERNAL MUSIC : 1960, 1963
Velvet roots in this rare radio broadcast of 5 Young pieces : "Two Sounds" (1960), and these 1963 compositions : "Early Tuesday Morning Blues", "Bb Dorian Blues (5th Day of yhe Hammer)", "The Over Day", "The Fire Is A Mirror". 1963 Personnel : La Monte Young, Marion Zazeela, John Cale, Angus MacLise, Tony Conrad, Terry Jennings. This is a fine place to hear some of the rare music that played a great part in John's contribution to VU. Sound : VG.
VU : GUITAR AMP TAPE Live at the Boston Tea Party, 15 March 1969. This is the blow-out of blow-outs. This unique tape came about when a boston fan recorded the show directly through Lou's guitar amp. The result ? Nearly inaudible vocals, Lou's guitar out in front of everything, and a fantastic ride through the guts of the band on a wild night. Here is the entire set, culminating in the explosive "Heroin"/ "Sister Ray", that may be the finest versions of these songs ever recorded. Sound : a crazy VG-.
VU : LIVE & LOWDOWN II
Vol. 2 in the 'best of' unreleased live VU - their best performances culled from all the various live tapes, and EQ'd to a high quality. This packs H, Candy and Move Right In (Tea Party 12/12/69), WL, Jesus, Ray/Murder Mystery (Tea Party 3/13/69), Waiting, Some Kinda, Jane, Lisa (Woodrose 4/1/70), and Ray (Tea Party 7/11/69). Sound : VG to G.
VU : LIVE & LOWDOWN III
Vol. 3 whips Waiting (La Cave 1/28/69), Set Free, Foggy (Tea Party 12/12/69), Sun, Reason, Walk & Talk It (Max's rehearsals 7/26/70), Run (Tea Party 7/11/69), Story Of My Life (Tea Party 3/13/69), WGO (La Cave 1/28/69), and Sweet Sister Ray (La Cave 4/30/68) on you. Sound : VG to G+.
VU : LIVE & LOWDOWN IV
Here's Waiting, Heroin (Hilltop 8/2/69), Pale, Candy (Bataclan rehearsals 1/26/72), Can't Stand It (3/13/69), Some Kinda, WL (Max's 8/23/70), Ride Into The Sun (x2), Beginning (1970 boot EP of studio outtakes), Cool It, I'm set Free (Max's Rehearsals 7/26/70), Ray, Pale (Tea party 12/12/68). Sound : VG to G+.

LOU INTERVIEWS 1983-1986
NICO/REED BEDROOM REHEARSALS 1970
Two old friends in a room running through some of their musical pasts - some of it collective, some of it quite separate. Fascinating tape of two very different minds at work, with some odd songs ("Little Sister", Little Queenie", "Wildwood Flower"). And doubly interesting to hear these two working on some of the classics they created : "All Tomorrow's", "Femme" and "Mirror". Bonus : the 4 songs EP boot from Paris 1972, with great sound, at the correct speed (for the first time). Sound : VG- to VG+.

VU : END OF COLE AVE
Important tape #50 unreels itself as a wonderful item : one entire evening of the Velvet Underground. Loose, well-recorded, with even portions recorded afterhours. You've heard most of the highlights on Live 69; now you can hear the entire evening - two complete sets worth of the VU. This is the entire rare End Cole Avenue CD, except the "Blue Velvet Jazz Jam" is truncated. It's just as well there's not room for all of that, as that sloppy jam is not the VU (maybe Moe and Doug, on other instruments), but mainly audience members having a rip at ye olde blues scales. The set list for the Velvet Underground, end Cole Ave, Dallas, Texas, 28 Oct. 1969 : Waiting, It's Just Too Much, Mirror, Some Kinda, Femme, Beginning, Afterhours, Sticking, One Of These Days (only known live version), Pale Blue Eyes, Ocean, I'm Set Free, WGO, H, S Ray, Lisa Says (Lou and crowd), R&R (Doug & Moe, 'Blue Velvet Jazz Jam'. Great sound !
MOE TUCKER & STERLING MORRISON LIVE MARCH 1992
VU : END OF COLE AVE / FIRST NIGHT
Very fine show - all totally new. This Has all the true VU portion of the sets, with only a truncation of the "Blue Velvet Jam" that's not really the VU anyway.
VU : LIVE IN LONDON 6 JUNE 1993
The complete Wembley Arena show.
VU : LIVE IN AMSTERDAM 8 JUNE 1993
The 5th show of the tour, and a special one - this was the smallest venue they played.
VU : LIVE IN ROTTERDAM 9 JUNE 1993
A large hall of 7000 wired fans boosted the band to a fine show.
VU : LIVE IN PRAGUE 13 JUNE 1993
The show of shows from 1993. No place ever embraced the Velvets as has Prague, and this show, with President Vaclav Havel in attendance, was the emotional peak of the tour.
VU : PARIS 15 JUNE 1993
It's Paris, the band is up and onward, and the crowd loves them !
VU : PARIS 16 JUNE 1993
The second night, and perhaps the finest single set of the tour.
VU : PARIS 17 JUNE 1993
VU : ROSKILDE FESTIVAL, FINLAND 1 JULY 1993 (Actually it's Denmark - ed.)
VU : MILAN 7 JULY 1993
Their last (ever ?) show as headliners, featuring "What Goes On", and a quite different, more abrasive VU sound from the Paris shows.
“You're not Dostoevsky,' said the citizeness

'Well, who knows, who knows,' he replied.

'Dostoevsky's dead,' said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently.

'I protest!' Behemoth exclaimed hotly. 'Dostoevsky is immortal!”
