Mark Lanegan Interview

Post by TheWarmth »

There's a really good interview with Lanegan (and also Mac DeMarco on the same show) by Marc Maron on his podcast. I know a few forumites dig Lanegan, so you might want to check it out:

That was a really good interview. Thanks.
I picked up Gargoyle yesterday and love it. This prompted me to dig out the last two Mark Lanegan records and they are just as strong as this new one. I played Blues Funeral a lot when it came out but Phantom Radio not nearly as much. I have played a few times in the past few days and I cant believe I overlooked this so much. Must have been a lot of records that came out around PR.
I am also revisiting both Soulsavers records with ML.Some amazing songs on those as well.

Thanks for turning me onto Lanegan. I've listened to Phantom Radio multiple times on YouTube and I'm going to purchase it now. I also enjoyed listening to the WTF interview. He said on there that Gargoyle is his tenth solo album. I'm curious as to which of his other albums I should check out next. It's cool that he has that early connection with grunge with his band the Screaming Trees and Kurt Cobain, but has found his own unique style.

Whiskey For The Holy Ghost is essential.
Bubblegum is a must.
The Winding Sheet is great.
Blues Funeral too.

This ^
One of the great back catalogues in modern rock (n roll). Yea whiskey is prob his high water mark but mostly everything is stellar. I love field songs, reading that track list is like a greatest hits, or rather best of, album. It's a fuckin dark record.

See my location for probably, if push came to shove, my favourite lanegan tune ----->
gonna burn brightly

Thank you! I'm listening to Blues Funeral on Amazon right now. The Winding Sheet is available on YouTube. I've listened to it once. That was his first I believe. These days I like hearing an album before purchasing it. I may take a chance on Whiskey for the Holy Ghost as it doesn't seem to be available online and it's gotten stellar reviews from Amazon, Allmusic and of course your strong recommendation.

I have to admit ignorance of Mark's entire oeuvre (aside from some guest spots) if there was ONE album to try, what would it be?

All the above recommendations are solid shouts, but if you want a `way in` album I would say Bubblegum, it covers a lot of bases/styles, kinda mid period album and reflects where he came from and maybe a bit of where he was going, Field Songs and Funeral Blues/ Phantom Radio are poles apart but maybe you can see both periods in some of Bubblegum I think, will have to play it now, beautiful sunny morning here, should go down a treat.

The LP I listen to most is 'Blues Funeral' which is by The Mark Lanegan Band. After that it is probably 'Black Pudding' which is Lanegan and Duke Garwood and then 'Bubblegum'. Phantom Radio just didn't do it for me at all, but the new one is superb.

It is also worth having a listen to the the LPs he released with Isobel Campbell too.

Blues Funeral and Bubblegum would be my top two.
I liked Phantom Radio, it's a grower. Just had my first listen to Gargoyle, very nice indeed. Can see it getting a lot of plays.

All of his records are now back in print thanks to Sub Pop. Whiskey has been stretched to a double LP and now sounds fantastic. All are good value imho.
The latter releases are reasonable too.
If you are in the US and you really like the Sub Pop era material there is a gorgeous box set that is really reasonable. Not sure how much it sells for overseas.

There are several as indictated above, but for me Bubblegum is unbeatable.

He's got an autobiography 'Sing Backwards and Weep' and an album, 'Straight Songs of Sorrow', to go along with it. Had always hoped Lanegan would do a book someday. Very much looking forward to it :D

Had a little book out just before Xmas, not quite a biography, but some insights to work and thoughts about it. First track from new album sounds pretty good as well

Dear oh dear, Mr. Lanegan has got himself involved in a twitter spat with Liam Gallagher

Surely he's not that desperate to sell copies of his autobiography? Thought he had a bit more class than that but i guess not.

He'd also be criticised if he didn't respond. To be fair it seems like it's literally just one page that mentions Liam and its the press who have picked up on it.
It is quite unbecoming of a man his age to be getting involved in this. But part of me loves the idea of Liam getting a pasting. He 100% reminds me of people from school who were cocky bullies and hid behind people twice his size.

The Screaming Trees FB page posted that link. Mark Lanegan has nothing to do with this page. I wouldn't blame him for starting this. I am sure the press picked up on this and started it.
I agree that he should respond to Liam's tweet. It was a bit below the belt imho.
Not surprising from LG.

My twitter feed was full of reaction to the page in question on Sunday, Sunday papers journos posting screen shots of it, and its a pretty fierce take down over some incident 25 yrs ago, in the social media era Liam was always gonna react. In Lanegan`s Quietus interview that appeared today he seemed a bit more... reflective when asked about it rather than today`s tweets offering him out, Gallagher we know is a dick, I thought Lanegan was kinda above this tbh, I mean what if he accepted, are we gonna have a square go in Hyde Park next summer? Gimme a break guys

If someone I had no respect for called me a "junky" I think I would have a hard time not responding.
That was low, even for Liam.

Another Lanegan article from NME this time, pretty interesting, very little time for the Conner brothers it seems, shame I really liked the Screaming Trees last two albums,
Not read the new book but have been listening to the new album after reading a lukewarm review, have to disagree, really liking this album, the electr/pop stylings apparent on some recent album - by the way I have no problem with this, some of his best later period songs done this way - are missing, its linked into the book and is quite a heavy, laid back, late night beer and a whisky kinda album, in that spirit I`m really enjoying it.
