Atomos a Winged Victory for the Sullen

Post by clewsr »

So I was relaxing last night watching BBC 4, when after watching quite an interesting film about Classical music in Britain, this came on - https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... gor-atomos

70 minutes of comtempory dance to an immensely haunting and droney sound track. The music felt to me to be in the realm of Silent Sound or Dreamweapon.

So it was the first time contemporary dance held my attention and probably the most interesting thing I've seen on TV in years. They don't often make deliberately obscure TV any more.

A bit of googling this morning told me more about the soundtrack, which I'm listening to again now - https://www.erasedtapes.com/release/era ... len-atomos.

so you will like the first album :: https://www.erasedtapes.com/release/era ... the-sullen

and parent company Stars Of The Lid especially 'Their Refinement of the Decline' album and other side project 'The Dead Texan'

all lovely ambient/neo classical/ drone stuff.

I believe myself and fellow Outpatients saw these play at the ATP festival a few years back, it was a nice chilled break from the other acts.

big fan of Stars of The Lid, it's proper beautiful minimalist stuff, I don't think you can really go wrong with them. sometimes it's just one note fading in and out but it often sounds totally sublime.

are there any other acts which sound like this??

I love Stars Of The Lid... really beautiful, beautiful stuff.

Couple of years ago, i was listening to some stuff on random and one of their songs came up (Mullohand). I was enjoying the tranquility of it all when it eventually faded out and the track that followed (Telstar Ponies - Song Of Ansuz) just arose from it all. Seemed so perfectly paired. I loved it so much, i put them together.

Just one of those wee moments when things just align in my head! 8)

Best SOTL album for me is Gravitational Pull vs The Desire For An Aquatic Life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ie0ZXAd3IY8

The final song 'Be Little With Me' is the perfect soundtrack to sitting on top of a mountain watching the sunrise. Or facing a beautiful dawn after a wonderful night of overindulgence, just utterly blissed out. It's essentially all about re-birth and new beginnings

However,I do find their later material gets a bit cold and uninviting.

Windy & Carl plough a similar furrow imo.

thanks for the recommendations all, I will check out further.
the trouble with a lot of ambient stuff is it can become wallpaper music if you are not careful. Stars of The Lid seem to get it right though

I see there's a new A Winged Victory For the Sullen long player released today:

The Undivided five - there are a few sound clips at the URL. Sound good. I've added it to my Xmas list!

Ticket procured yesterday for AWTFTS gig at National Concert Hall, Dublin in March. Should be interesting at least.
