Deluxe versions of other Spiritualized albums

Post by Dreamweapon »

Given the treatment that LAGWAFIS received and Jason's propensity for finding the perfect sound (and therefore the increasing likelihood of multiple versions of tracks), I wondered whether there might be any chance of other albums in the Spiritualized back catalogue being given the same touch....?

I know there's Friendly Fire, Blue On Blue, the two Complete Works and the Real Complete Works albums, but if there is other material to fill more albums, I'm pretty sure a whole load of us would buy it (and also give Jason some money, especially following comments about how much it cost to put on some of the ANH shows)...

yay, A conversation about Spiritualized!

I think Pure Phase is a candidate for this. There must be some good out takes and alternative versions from that. I'm sure I recall bza mentioning and 18min version of these blues? Or was there a rumour of a version of the album performed entirely by the The Balanescu Quartet?

Friendly Fire, Blue On Blue and the first Complete Works come from an era when the band was an actual band, and Spritualized were verging on the prolific whith numerous singles and EPs with alternative takes to fill the gaps between albums. The basically ceased around Ladies and Gents, with everything focussed on the album release, so I wonder how much material there is for delux version of later albums? Saying that I'm sure Jason said in interviews something about wanting to revist aspects of ANH, or was it the Space project song - Always together with you?

I sincerly hope for some form of spz activity in 2020. A UK tour would be great, but I can't say i'm optimistic. i'd like to see Jason making occassional music, like those excellent Kenzo tracks that appeared out of no where a few years back.

There was some talk of this on here when Will was offering those cassettes of Spacemen 3 early Spiritualized. Did he ever sell them by the way? Agreed that Pure Phase would be the most likely for the Deluxe treatment. There is definitely material available. I recall Jason saying in an interview that he found an early version of Take Good Care Of It, which was stripped down and with Rico much higher in the mix, and him saying that it sounded beautiful and he wondered why he ended up putting so many effects over it.

Found it. It's from Uncut 2015 with Jason discussing Spiritualized, album by album.

It’s weird because recently I found an original mix of “Take Good Care Of It”, with Rico Rodriguez. It’s kind of straight, without any of that phasing and soundscape to it, and it’s beautiful. I listened to it, thinking, ‘Why the hell did I do anything to that?’ But the work involved in doing something is almost more important than what you’re making.

I'd love a box of Let it Come Down sessions. That would be amazing to hear. I can only imagine how many demos there are if most of the ideas were hummed into a tape or played on piano keys. 20th anniversary next year, too! The time is right. :D

And yeah, a UK tour would be greatly welcomed!

For me, Amazing Grace and Let It Come Down were simply leftovers from the Ladies & Gents sessions, so I'd be surprised if there would be much more of interest in the vaults from around then. That's when Jason lost his mojo a bit (IMO) and we had a couple of lacklustre albums. Some highlights, for sure, but not much more.

That about sums it up for me.

Come to think of it i still haven't listened to the second bonus disc of the L&G reissue

Personally, i'd like the full Glastonbury 1993 set to get an official release. Actually, that would make for nice bonus material for any deluxe treatments; a professionally recorded gig from the relevant period.

If we are fantasizing, my vote will forever be a release of the Glastonbury 1994 concert.

There is a poor cassette recording which is barely listenable. Included is the best version of the best Spiritualized song of all time. Slide Song. It is amazing and in my opinion superior to the other 94 recordings of Slide Song which are also superb. There is a different arrangement, more guitar, it just makes me smile.

It also reminds me of Ian Goodchild, a massive Spz fan who I wish still visited these parts.

in terms of fantasy island, i'd go 1992. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cInkTa9kq3A
Sadly I don't think I was there for this, although I've somehow managed to convince myself over the years that I was actually there. I rember being so excited when I bought an expensive VHS of this show in Camden market. A video recroding of spiritualized back then was as rare as anything.

I was definately there in 1993 and 1994 and think I preferred the 1993 set, (headlining the other stage after the Orb?) to the 1994, but I think we deserve a quality release of all the glastonbuy performances just to see...

Could really go for a live album release. I won't be picky. Just want a new official release.

I would go for a comprehensive Spiritualized at the BBC boxset, sorta like the one the Super Furries did. All the sessions and maybe a couple of full Glastonbury gigs.

Folks, we have a thread winner!

Good idea :D
You are correct in preferring 1993 to '94. The former was mindblowing, the latter merely very good. Btw, it was Porno For Pyros they followed on the Other Stage in '93 on the Sunday night. The Orb played Saturday.

I love the sound of this. Though I'd be happy with a deluxe vinyl update of Pure Phase too.

Can't believe the lack of love for a Let it Come Down box. Just me then? I'd love to hear some of those orchestral and choir sessions or even versions of the songs without these parts on. I'm even curious about the demo tape of LICD Jason gave to Doggen when he joined the band- were these just stripped down guitar versions of the songs before the album got anywhere near Abbey Road? It's just such a massive album some of the individual components must sound stunning.

The BBC box is a great shout and I am on board for that too!

i'd love a LICD box too, for sure! As you say, it would be amazing to hear initial/demo/acoustic versions as a contrast to how the album ended up.

LICD seems to split opinion huh. I for one think it's a fantastic album in all its ambitious and overblown glory. rock solid songs on the whole too.
I can see how it might have been the last straw for some however, as there's very little drone or minimalism in there.

I would be very interested in a deluxe version of it, however I think the fact the musical parts were hummed into a dictaphone and built up from there, means that no proper demos likely exist.

how about that live rerecording of Amazing Grace then? or the ten minute version of This Little Life of Mine.
or just remix SHSL with some reverb please ;)
