God, this one hit me hard. I consider myself lucky that I was able to see him in 2018. Swamp Dogg came out and sang "Sam Stone" with him. Not a dry eye in the theatre.
I just watched this after watching Ethan Hawke on What's in My Bag at Amoeba Records in which he recommended a Prine album. What are some of his albums that I should check out first?
I would definitely say his first album (self-titled) is a must. It's got "Sam Stone" on it (which "Cop Shoot Cop" pulls lyrics from). It kind of encompasses all of his music's qualities (humor/sadness/upbeat/slow/country/rock) and ages pretty well. And this was before cancer changed his voice, so he sounds similar to early Bob Dylan.
I haven't gotten too much into his albums after that, but Bruised Orange and Sweet Revenge are great. I really enjoyed his last album, The Tree of Forgiveness a lot too. It seemed like he almost knew it would be his last with songs touching on mortality and a life lived long and hard, but it has a casualness to it that means (to me) that he's at peace with it.

So far this is the one I've bought. Thanks for the tip! I'll probably be looking more into his catalogue in the coming days and months.
So it is that Brandy Carlile will perform a tribute song by Prine for the 2021 Grammy's. I've ended up purchasing Sweet Revenge, Bruised Orange, The Missing Years and The Tree of Forgiveness so far.
I had guessed that Prine was an obscure artist that would have never received a Grammy's tribute. Now I'm looking forward to checking out this performance. It is thanks to Jason that I discovered him.
