Now-Again records

Post by simonkeeping »

It's a rare thing but every very so often you discover a new portal into some music you've never heard before that bowls you over. This is one of those occasions. I follow Edan (underground hip hop legend) on Instagram and as well as updating on new music he's involved in he posts some amazing psych music he plans on playing when he's DJ'ing. On one of his posts Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) asked if he knew of any good comps to find some tracks he had posted snippets of and Edan revealed Now-Again Record as a good source.

I may be alone but I've been digging into their catalog and it's a joy. One of those opportunities to fall down a brand new rabbit hole and embrace some incredible music. Zambian Psych rock, Iranian Psych folk (from before the revolution so making westernised music was illegal), Thai folk, unheard funk oddities from all corners of the globe - It's just mind blowing how much amazing unheard of music lurks in their back catalog. Every time I stumble on a yet another reissue or comp I add it to the ever growing list of things I want to buy from (the shipping from the US is a little eye watering but never mind).

It's also really exciting to hear music wth other languages and accents.I'm guilty of ignoring a lot of non-western music in my quest for new music. I guess that's in part down to the way it was treated as a slightly poor relation in many shops I frequented in my younger days. HMV used to shove the 'World music' in a few racks next to the jazz section at the back of the shop. It's thanks to a new generation of labels throwing their nets out so far that finding this stuff now is relatively easy (if you know where to look).

I'm sure I'm late to the party on this as there's plenty of people on here who seek this stuff out but if you haven't had the pleasure then check out some of this magic.

Anyone, wanting to dig into Edan's instagram it's here - https://www.instagram.com/edanexists/?hl=en
But be warned it's probably going to cost you bit in records...

Definitely one of the better re-issue labels out there. Put out a lot of good funk and afro comps. Also releases current acts too.
Pretty sure the guy who runs the label turns up in the Thunder Soul documentary about the Kashmere Stage Band as he put out a comp of their material.

For sure. So many great comps. I need to check out the Thunder Soul Doc, Is it good? Yeah - Egon runs it right? Some of the finds he posts on Instagram are insane. Charity shops still seem to have some treasures in.

Hi all...new member here.

For what its worth I can vouch for the wonderfulness of Now Again Records. Egon (and Madlib, who finds a lot of the stuff), are truly deep diggers and constantly unearth treasure. If you're on Spotify I heartily recommend Egon's profile & playlists, a great way to explore - he's just put a World Psych mix up which is glorious.

Plenty of his DJ sets on YouTube too, and Boiler Room collections which is fascinating.

Hi there and welcome! I need to dig in to the Spotify playlists. Funnily enough I stumbled on His Boiler Room DJ sets at the weekend. So, good! I need to set aside some time to watch the collections videos, I imagine they are really interesting.

Edan is awesome - Beauty and Beat is one of my favourite albums and I really like it when people share the wealth of their musical knowledge too (rather than hiding tracklistings and being secretive about what they are playing). Something both J and Bobby G do too. It really shows a real generosity of character and a passion for spreading the love of music to be like that.

Thanks! And yes, 100% agree. Egon is always willing to share. Madlib always worth listening to as well. This interview is great...his going through Radio France archive.....the series is worth watching, Geoff Barrow's is good.
