2021: what are we looking forward to?
I know we're all looking forward to the end of this pandemic, lockdown etc, and gigs starting again, but what new records are people excited about/looking forward this year? There were hardly any gigs last year so have bands been locked away home recording new stuff or have they been having some time off?
I can't think of lots of stuff, but a couple of release have caught my eye over the last few weeks:
The Telescopes - new long player from them in Feb. The teasers from this have sounded good. Fuzzy hypnotic guitars with Stephen Lawerence's voice way down in the mix.
Cheval Sombre - two new albums promised by him this year. Both involving Sonic Boom. I've been waiting for this for years - since Mad Love (was that 2012?). I think they are being released on Sonic Cathedral - not sure when!
I see the High Violets have got a new reord deal, Billy Duffy has been recording stuff for the Cult, Anton Newcombe has been busy recording new BJM tracks (nothing new there - it seems it releases a new song every other day!), and Sonic is releasing a "remix" version of last years album with the two Japanese tracks included. Hopefully lots of other stuff that I don't know about.

Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
Have The Black Angels, Kikagaku Moyo and Dead Meadow live albums all on pre-order.
The Cheval Sombre one looks (and will be) fabulous.
Hoping the debut Flowers of Hell album gets its much needed (and proposed) vinyl release too along with the rumoured 10th anniversary reissue of The Dead Skeletons debut.
Plenty of lovely stuff to look forward to!

Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
Its early days but the new release schedule never halts, like Laz Im waiting on the Kikagaku and Black Angels live albums
Got a new Burial 12" on pre order and when pay day comes I`ll have a new Blanck Mass and William Doyle album joining it, a new Mogwai early this yr as well,
Mythic Sunship have a new album coming on Tee Pee, first release away from El Paraiso? Should be interesting, lets hope its better than the last Causa Sui, found it disappointingly underwhelming,
Maybe the one I`m most looking forward too, is hopefully the first new LOOP album in what, 31 yrs? fingers crossed that happens sometime this yr

Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
drawing a bit of a blank on this one. usually there's a few things I'm looking for in the pipeline but not sure. new Mogwai soon. guess I'll be the first to speculate MBV (like every year). heard whispers that there might be new Durutti Column material too.
That Black Angels live album sounds good. apparently it's all songs from the first two albums - still their best.
there's video of one of the songs here

in terms of reissues it's gonna be the 50th anniversary of a lot of classic albums from 1971, so that could see some good archive stuff come out.

The Durutti Column may be recording a bit but I wouldn't expect much from them yet. Vini's playing is still very affected by his last stroke. The Sex and Death LP will see a reissue on 2xLP (for the first time) and CD in the next few months.angelsighs wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 10:37 am drawing a bit of a blank on this one. usually there's a few things I'm looking for in the pipeline but not sure. new Mogwai soon. guess I'll be the first to speculate MBV (like every year). heard whispers that there might be new Durutti Column material too.

I'm looking forward to the Mogwai LP and to the 2 LPs Cheval Sombre is supposedly releasing with Sonic producing. There is also Sonic's remix thing to look forward to.

Cheers Olan. Yeah just spotted somewhere that he was recording, it's understandable if it is a way off. I'm just glad he's writing again. The reissues are coming thick and fast, hopefully he's getting some of that money.
Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
A gig. Just a gig, with a plastic cup of crap lager, a ropey sound system and the usual post-smoking ban waft of BO stinging my nostrils.
And I'll be as happy as a pig in sh1t.
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone

Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
Just spotted that the Flyying Colours have a new long player released in Feb. Really liked their first two EPs, and album.

I went for the yellow and pink one, seems to fit more with the sleeve artwork.
I have high hopes for this one, love their previous output and the last two singles.
Also looking forward to Neil Young’s Way down in the rust bucket. Freedom, Ragged Glory and Weld were my entry point for Neil, so I gotta have this.

New Madlib album came out today.
Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
The new Flyying Colours album was delivered today. Lovely record upon first listen. Pretty smooth production, good tunes. Reminded me a bit of Pains of Being Pure at Heart (remember them?), twee songs with loud guitars. A bit of a step away from shoegaze, but very nice indeed. Think I’m gonna play it again right now

Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
Ordered the limited Bandcamp version (all 150 sold out in an hour) even though the shipping to the US is as much as the album Any idea if there are plans for US distribution or if any US record shops are carrying the yellow vinyl version?stegraham wrote: ↑Fri Mar 26, 2021 1:04 pm Just pre-ordered the second new Cheval Sombre album of the year:

Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
+1!
And for the shops to reopen - I don't think I've browsed records in a shop since last summer, early autumn at best?
First for collection services to resume.. I do have a few LPs to go collect off Monorail once that restarts (I got myself a streaming stereo system last year, so I haven't minded getting my hands on physical LPs a bit late), but I'm also keen to resume browsing and shopping from the two local shops.

At this stage I'm very much looking forward to a haircut. After that, a slow, steady and careful return to normality (whatever that is) particularly for my kids would be great.

Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
anyone else looking forward to the new Six Organs of Admittance album? from the previews it's sounding like yet another metamorphasis for his sound, lots of dramatic electric guitars over otherwordly electronics

this interview is really good, in particular it's really interesting what he says about Spiritualized, high praise indeed. I know what he means as well- even when Spiritualized albums get really busy or noisy there's so much clarity and you can hear every sound. Cop Shoot Cop springs to mind, or even as recent as And Nothing Hurt where there can be a lot going on
RCU: You know, just putting it out there, I think you have mastered the artistry of textural music in a way that I think is pretty unparalleled. When I hear somebody else utilizing a great deal of texture in their sound, you’re the person who I typically compare or rate them by.
BC: Thank you. Yeah. I probably compare my stuff to—I don’t listen to them all the time—but, Spiritualized. In terms of texture, and that’s not even in terms of noise. Although he does get kind of noisy. But in terms of pure texture and layering, some of those records…I don’t understand how he mixed them. I don’t understand how you can hear everything in the mix. It’s incredible just on a pure sonic level. So he’s kinda my texture guy. I’m like, “How did he do that?“

Great interview. I think he knows what he’s talking about - the layering and such.
I remember on this this board people complained about the horns prevalent on the likes of ‘On The Sunshine’ and particularly ‘The Morning After’ - and the lack of guitars.
The guitars are all there! Play it louder.

Re: 2021: what are we looking forward to?
totally! I have no issue with the production of ANH at all. as a home recording I think it really benefitted from the time to work on it and get all the elements perfect in the mix where he wanted them.
interestingly I think the last Six Organs was also a home recording and although very different musically I can definitely hear some similarities on a sheer sonic level.
