Recommendations
Not sure if we ever had a place to put recommendations other than via the What You Listening To and recent purchases threads, so i thought i'd start one!
Coupla records that have fell head over heels with recently are:
Trevor Beld Jiminez - I Like It Here
The Trevor Beld Jiminez album is just a gorgeous slab of Californian sunshine, much needed on these cold and bitter Scottish days. Groundbreaking? Not really, but i'm a sucker for Cali-vibes. Well worth checking out if you are fan of GospelbeacH, Beechwood Sparks, The Tyde, etc. Out on Brent Rademaker's (of all those previous bands) own label, Curation Records.
Farmer Dave & The Wizards of the West - S/T
Keeping with the Beechwood Sparks link, Farmer Dave's first album in a long time. Heard the song above a few weeks ago and just got sucked in. GORGEOUS guitar tones on this, reminiscent of J Mascis playing but, again, just some great songs and sunny vibes. And lets face it, we could all benefit from some of that to lift our spirits sometimes. Also out on Brent's Curation Records.

Re: Recommendations
An excellent thread idea James...
My tastes have mellowed quite a bit in the last decade. I'm more drawn to sounds like these links James has posted these days - these are both unfamiliar to me and sound nice. Sunny American music, particularly a lot of hippyish southern sounds, tends to be the soundtrack in our house.
My favourite album last year was The Texas Gentlemen's 'Floor It!'. Formed by 2 massively experienced and respected session players - Nik Lee, guitar, and Daniel Creamer, piano - with others chosen from a select pool of quality session musicians in the Dallas area. Here's a live session of one of the choice tunes from that album, 'Skyway Street Car'. Nice Little Feat vibe here (Little Feat rather encapsulating the stuff I'm listening to now).
Over in Tennessee, and from Nashville, are The Cadillac Three who managed to release 2 full albums in 2020, both terrific and close runners up for album of the year. Fuzzed up country rock songs about girls, getting stoned, southern roots and bourbon are the general content. That said 1 of last year's 2 albums was pretty much funk. Here's a classic from the non-funk record, 'Back Home', which covers all the Cadillac's favourite subject matter.
Last choice is a leap back to 1968. I'd heard some Taj Mahal but never investigated properly. I recently found out this tune, 'Leaving Trunk', was the basis from one of the most crucial pieces of music of my life, Jack Nitzsche's 'Poor White Hound Dog' from the Performance movie soundtrack. I had no idea it was based on this but that's certainly the case. Psychedelic blues at its finest.

Nice one Mark. As much as i still love my heavy, noisey stuff, i do enjoy a little mellow escape too.
That Texas Gentlemen session is great. Very reminiscent of Chris Robinson Brotherhood and their Grateful Dead vibes. Really enjoyed that. Haven't heard of the 2nd one, and have never looked into Taj Mahal much, but that track is superb.

Nick McCabe’s put out some new music, instrumental ambient type stuff, haven’t given it a proper listen yet, but sounded nice enough in the background while working.

I've tried The Cadillac Three a few times in recent years and i just find them far too clean and polished.
However,if country funk is your thing you can't go wrong with Light In The Attic's two compilations, Country Funk Vol.1 & 2. Between them they cover 1967-75. I think volume 2 has the edge but both are worth having.

Terry Gross: Had this on repeat since last night. Been quite a while since something has demanded multiple listens from me. Nice to be excited!
Trans Am's guitarist lets rip with a couple of mates. Repetitve, for the most part uptempo, some occasional heavy riffs. Track 3 is an uplifting pop delight. Serious head-nodding all round. Check out their other songs too, quality.

anyone familiar with the band Monoshock? I'd only really known the name before. Cardinal Fuzz are reissuing a collection of their tracks so checked it out. apparently an influence on Comets on Fire which is plain to hear, but I could also see fans of The Heads enjoying. scuzzy, fuzzy rock and roll music!

This is just too good. So many little references to music I love, including (in no particular order):
That free jazz stuff Jason used to do live with people like Han Bennink and Evan Parker
(very) early Kraftwerk
Can
Albert Ayler late 60s space jazz
Art Ensemble of Chicago
And a helping of psychedelia, given that it's a group featuring members of Hills and GOAT. It's music that transports me to my happy place. I cannot recommend it enough...

I had never heard of Murder by Death, and was surprised how much I like their sound.

Some songs have a real Johnny Cash vocal vibe going on.

They have been doing an annual weekend since 2014 at the Stanley Hotel (inspiration for The Shining) in Estes Park.davedecay wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 3:50 pm I had never heard of Murder by Death, and was surprised how much I like their sound.

Finally got round to listening to it after having it a few months. Pretty much what you described. Had to split it into two sessions though as it's a bit much to take in one listen! Julian Cope used to mention them quite a bit in his Drudion / AOTM which is where i first heard of them. Ethan Miller (Comets on Fire / Howlin' Rain) put out a couple of cd's by them a few years ago on his Silver Current label.angelsighs wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 9:25 am anyone familiar with the band Monoshock? Much better than the debut album. Great production too, sounds really good.Greeny wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 5:09 pm This is just too good. So many little references to music I love,

yeah it's definitely Cope's sort of thing isn't it? he's into his noisy rock but he likes it more primal and visceral rather than anything too intellectual.sunray wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 4:33 pmFinally got round to listening to it after having it a few months. I think the Silver Current releases were also outtakes collections if I remember right- I looked into that, as well as their only 'proper' album. but seems you can't get hold of any of it. I liked what I heard of this new collection, but not enough to spend £30 on it!

I know there's a lot of drone lovers here and this is really good stuff.
However I dug deeper and the really good stuff for me seems to be their earlier work which was a bit thicker and fuzzier and nice thick guitar drones in there too. Particularly this album near the end.
Can actually hear where Godspeed got a lot of their drone side from.

I've just bought a Brennan b2 and ripped everything I own into FLAC on it. I'd recommend listening to anything you've already got that you've not heard in years.

I know a few folks are on Instagram here, and some of you might be familiar with a page called 'sceninbetween'. I can't recommend it enough. Loads of cool piccies of bands, many totally unknown, from yesteryear. The guy is producing a book which I can't wait for.
Here's a great shot of Pete K from the series:

Yes it is. I've heard his name about a little and then someone directed me to that Insta page which I follow pretty avidly.
Many years ago I took loads of photos of The Damned, sometimes officially, so I had a decent camera at those often pretty wild gigs. Yet I never took any photos at other gigs and when I look at this Insta page I really regret it!
Re: Recommendations
Board members - recommend me some good heavy bass old dub. Summer is here and need some cool breeze. I know Runcible has manifested good dub stuff, so please recommend me some. I guess i know the usual suspects of the genre, looking for more! Cheers.
Re: Recommendations
Tong poo, YMO remixed by the Orb!
That's if you go for really heavy bass!
"Thank you"
Re: Recommendations
Heaviest dub album ever is Lee Perry's 'Black Ark In Dub'. This is not sunshine music, it's late night shit - think chillums rather than bongs.
Staright up masterpieces are stuff like:
Lee Perry - Blackboard Jungle
Upsetters - Super Ape
Augustus Pablo – East of the River Nile
Horace Andy – In The Light Dub
Prince Fari - Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 1. Chapters 2 & 3 also good
Augustus Pablo - Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown
Tappa Zukie - In Dub
Keith Hudson - Brand. Also Pick A Du
Congos - Heart of the Congos. Not dub as such but still very psychedelic.
Yabby You & Michael Prophet Meets Scientist – At The Dub Station (King Tubbys)
There are loads more but you can't go wrong with any of those. All brilliant.

Just on the reggae front again.... If you fancy a fun film watch I can't praise 1978 reggae movie 'Rockers' enough.
It's right from roots reggae's prime era so the soundtrack is superb throughout and the story is actually pretty good too. I won't spoil it but it's a film that leaves you smiling despite the fairly simple but effective plot. A few cameo appearances from key players at the time too and some neat bits from recording studios. The inevitable crowds of rastas blowing huge clouds of green smoke at Dance Hall events are fun, as is some of the spectacularly bizarre dress sense of a few characters. A wonderfully chaotic scene at the local record store and the 'takeover' of a DJ booth playing disco are a couple of my favourite moments, but it's a terrific movie as a whole and one that is a rewarding repeat watch.

For fans of David Holmes and Death In Vegas i reckon. Cinematic grooves and guitars to get your head nodding and feet tapping. Fuck it, you could indulge in some actual dancing too for most of it
Would of worked better if they'd left off the last three songs though. Not only would it have cut the time down from 67 to 50 minutes but those songs don't really fit in with the rest of the album. Plus the last tune is an edit of track 4 so no need for it at all.
