Fav Albums and Stuff: 2021

Post by stegraham »

It's getting to the end of the year and would be interested to see what everyone has been listening to - what floats yer boat, fav records, tracks etc. I don't have a top ten this time and I have Mr Sombre twice so maybe it's just a top 8:

Time Wait For No One - Cheval Sombre
Days Go By - Cheval Sombre
Sun Reign - Magic Castles
Earth Trip - Rose City Band
Fantasy Country - Flyying Colours
Stoked on Planet Summer - Juleah
I Have Nothing To Say To The Major of LA - Dean Wareham
Quarantine Tapes - Dean & Britta
Birling Gap - The Cantenary Wires

I also really enjoyed the Pastel EP and of course the Cheval Sombre Althea EP.

There seems to lots of stuff to look forward to in 2022 for me: new Spirtualized (of course!!), Asteroid #4, Earthless, Eels, Loop, BJM, Lightening in a Twilight Hour, The Cult etc. Hopefully get to some gigs too - unless there's going to more lockdowns because of this new variant. God, how depressing!!!

For once, I don’t have a stand-out album of the year. Some absolute crackers though:

SAULT (that’s five out of five amazing albums in less than 3 years)
Little Simz
Cleo Sol
(all three of the above produced by Inflo, who must be some kind of genius)
Floating Points / Pharoah Sanders
serpentwithfeet
Joel Culpepper
Joy Crookes
Sherelle’s DJ Kicks
Daniel Avery
Eris Drew
The Bug
Lana Del Rey x2
Madlib
Damon Locks Black Music Ensemble
Czarface & MF DOOM

The Liminanas & Laurent Garnier - De Pelicula (surprised this wasn't picked up on around here).
The Bug - Fire
Terry Gross - Soft Opening
Those 3 are easily my most played new releases of 2021.

Endless Boogie - Admonitions
New Age Doom & Lee Scratch Perry - Lee Scratch Perry's Guide To The Universe
Gnod - Easy To Build, Hard To Destroy (Ok, it's a compilation but it's a damn fine one and better than most new stuff i heard this year).

Plus a few solid releases that i enjoyed but didn't have me dying to listen to them again (probably my default category really, year in year out  ).

8) Glad someone else got on this. I believe it was I  that described it as 'an aggressive Windy & Carl'

Argh, I missed this off my list. It’s absolutely terrific. I’d never heard of the Limiñanas but I read a review of David Holmes’ fantastic single “Hope Is The Last Thing To Die” which mentioned them as sounding similar. Did some invetigation and it led me to this album with Laurent Garnier. Such a thrill of a record.

I just realized I only bought two new albums this year: L.W. and Butterfly 3000 from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard both of which I like. I got some older stuff including albums from jazz greats Coleman Hawkins, Billie Holiday, and John Coltrane.

I'm looking forward to a new AURORA album in January and Spiritualized in February.

And I've been enjoying this Morningface music now.

I'm in the slightly weird position of absolutely loving The Liminanas but never listening to their albums.

Seen them live a few times now and their sound on record just pales by comparison to the point where I don't actively stick them on. From tiny indoor give to big outdoor shows they've never failed to blow me away and create the most incredible wall of sound, I'd urge everyone to go see them when the chance arises.

Had to search those three Olan. First two Orb related and the latter some palatable jazz! Will check out all three properly.

It's a good one alright. I think it highlighted for me that i prefer their later material.

New albums I’ve enjoyed this year:

Sonic Boom - Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough. Some great remixes, some of which I prefer to the originals. A shame the other four tracks on All Things Being Equal, if they were remixed, weren’t included on this as well and this could have come out as a double album.

Primal Scream - Demodelica. Puts both the Scream and Andrew Weatherall in a good light. Shows the foundations of the songs were already there before AW worked his magic on these to produce the masterpiece Screamadelica would eventually become. Emphasises, what both parties have previously stated, that neither could have made that record without the other.

Dean & Britta - Quarantine Tapes. Some great covers done in the Dean & Britta style.

Cheval Sombre - Time Waits For No One. Really enjoyed this but strangely, couldn’t get into Days Gone By.

Primal Scream - Live At Levitation. Side 1 is great, the 2nd side goes a bit flat after Higher Than The Sun. WTF is Country Girl on here for?

Goat - Head Soup. Good to have all the non album tracks on one album & the two new songs are decent enough.

New albums I need to give another chance:

Cheval Sombre - Days Gone By. See above.

Rose City Band - Earth Trip. Not as good as the previously two & a bit too Country sounding for my liking.

Richard Norris - Hypnotic Response. Was really looking forward to this as I’ve always loved everything Richard Norris has been involved in. Hopefully, it’s a slow burner.

War Paint - The Fool (Andrew Weatherall Mix). Not sure what I was expecting but it definitely wasn’t this. First impressions were why on earth did AW get involved in this? Just goes to show, it doesn’t matter how much of a genius you are, you can’t polish a turd!

I assume you weren't a fan of the original album either?

A pretty good year for music, I reckon. But I wouldn't say there's one album that really JUMPS out at me as my soundtrack of the year, or a true classic. Having said that, the below are the albums I've enjoyed most this year.
Interesting that there's not a lot of crossover between the lists here. My tastes continue to lean towards leftfield guitar music and a bit of jazz/improv in recent years.

Daniel Bachman- Axacan
https://threelobed.bandcamp.com/album/axacan
Bill Orcutt & Chris Corsano- Made Out of Sound
https://billorcutt.bandcamp.com/album/made-out-of-sound
Dean McPhee - Witches Ladder
https://deanmcphee.bandcamp.com/album/witchs-ladder
William Parker- Mayan Space Station
https://williamparker.bandcamp.com/albu ... ce-station
Ben Chasny- The Intimate Landscape
https://benchasny.bandcamp.com/album/th ... -landscape
Mildred Maude- Sleepover
https://mildredmaude.bandcamp.com/album/sleepover
Eivind Aarset - Phantasmagoria, or A Different Kind of Journey -
https://eivindaarset.bandcamp.com/album ... of-journey
Birds of Maya- Valdez
https://birdsofmaya.bandcamp.com/album/valdez

Then I've been checking out the end of year lists and these have piqued my interest, not saying they are up there yet but worth checking out.

Rural Tapes- self titled
https://ruraltapes.bandcamp.com/album/rural-tapes
Tonstartssbandht - Petunia
https://tonstartssbandht.bandcamp.com/
Ill Considered- Liminal Space
https://illconsidered.bandcamp.com/album/liminal-space
Irreversible Entanglements - Open The Gates
https://intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/open-the-gates

last two both jazz records.
