Radio Spiritualized

For this most recent 2022 tour, there was a song that was played over the PA early on around the time doors opened, that I'm desperately seeking. I tried to Shazam it in time, but missed it by a few seconds, and it's driving me crazy. If anyone going to the next round of UK tour dates can Shazam these songs and post them here, I would be eternally grateful!

In that spirit, I wanted to share this playlist that I've had for a few years (I tweak it every now and then), for any lurkers that might be new to the band, or for any die hards that have an interest and can suggest some recommendations. After reading many interviews, tagging songs played over PAs during tours, reading through this forum, and looking through archives, old tour footage, and bootlegs/set lists I've assembled this playlist that I think very accurately represents the music that influenced Jason, and a few artists that he has influenced as well. Let's talk Spiritualized influences, please recommend any other artists I can look into.

Radio Spiritualized https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7Mip3 ... 8cb6294b7f

::Edit:: My other playlist, Radio Spaceman, has been updated to a massive 120 songs and 9 hour runtime, with about 3 more hours more waiting to be added (trying to figure out the best placement). The first few dozen tracks are songs that I've seen Jason reference in his own songs, mentioned in interviews, covered, and a few from the Jason Spacemen 90 fan made comp. It then follows with tracks from DJ sets and radio sessions from Breezeblocks, XFM, and ATP. The last 40 tracks are songs he has curated on tours (songs that were played during stage set up). Playlist can be found here https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6dfnO ... c8c3904bf3 ::End::

The Students – I’m So Young
I kick this playlist off with a suite of doo-wop songs. This song has been covered many times, I think the Ronettes version is probably my favorite, but I left their contribution later in the playlist. This might be the second oldest song on the playlist so it felt fitting to start at the roots.

The Chantels – Maybe
This song has a feeling of longing and desperation that is so prevalent in Spiritualized songs.

Sam Cooke – Bring it On Home to Me
I chose this song because it’s a great bridge between the prior song and the following.

The Ronettes – When I Saw You
The first Phil Spector produced song in this playlist. Phil Spector is probably my favorite producer of all time, and his influence is heavily represented throughout Spiritualized’s catalog, especially on their album “Let it Come Down”.

The Crystals – Then He Kissed Me
Possibly my favorite Phil Spector produced song. There seems to be nods to this song on Spiritualized’s most recent single “The Mainline Song”. The Spiritualized song “Then She Kissed Me and It Felt Like a Kiss” is also a direct reference to them.

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas – Come and Get These Memories
I just really like this one.

The Harvey Averne Dozen – You’re No Good
I believe I first heard this song remixed by Terry Riley (remix closes the playlist) waiting for Spiritualized to come on stage on Valentine’s Day when they played LAGWFIS with a full orchestra and choir. This track blew my mind. So many elements in here that I can hear in Jason’s music.

The Apollas – Who Would Want Me Now?
I think this is where the playlist really starts to kick off with huge productions and over top emotional performances. Just an absolute flawless vocal performance, and somber but uplifting horns and strings to guide the track.

Dion – In Out of the Shadows
I discovered this album from a joint interview with Jason Pierce and Bobby G (from Primal Scream), where during the interview one of them gets distracted by a song off this album being played in the background. I’m really glad I looked into this record, the whole album is a beautiful Spector produced masterpiece.

Cher – Baby I Love You
This song is not on Spotify because it’s never been released digitally. I actually ended up buying the 45 off of Discogs and made my own rip to include on this playlist. It was produced by Phil Spector, and I believe it played a significant role in how Spiritualized’s “Stop Your Crying” was created. This might be my favorite song off this playlist and really ties everything together, I wish more people knew of it. You can listen to it here.

The Beach Boys – I Can Hear Music
Probably the most Phil Spector-esque Beach Boys song I can think of. I am a massive Beach Boys fan now, and I owe that to Jason because I took an interest in them after I found out about his love for the SMiLE project. This is probably my favorite vocal performance from Carl Wilson (and there are many to choose from). Some songs leave you thankful to exist, this one does it for me.

Spiritualized – You Know It’s True
I originally wasn’t going to have any Spiritualized in this playlist, but I placed it in recently because it works well with some of the songs that follow it. A doo-wop song for heroin?

The Velvet Underground – Jesus
Spiritualized’s “If I Were With Her Now” kind of reminds me of this. And we all need a little more "Jesus" in our lives, haha!

Spacemen 3 – Lord Can You Hear Me
Jason’s old band.

Mazzy Star – Blue Light
First contemporary artist in the playlist. The keys in this remind of Spiritualized’s “Shine a Light” and other tracks off of Lazer Guided Melodies.

Beach House – Many Nights
Recent album. When I first heard this song, I immediately thought of “Lazer Guided Melodies” with its caramel like guitars, and dreamy synths. Song makes you feel like you’re floating on a cloud.

Angel Olsen – All the Good Times
This song just came out, and immediately after listening to it I thought this was the most Spiritualized-like song she’s ever made. Jazzy drums, slide guitars, big band…it’s an instant classic and I really hope the rest of the album lives up to it. Absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful.

Lorraine Ellison – Stay With Me
Stay With Me ranks high up there for my favorite Spiritualized song. The arpeggios in both songs are kind of similar.

Merrilee Rush & The Turnabouts - Angel of the Morning
The next few songs were written by Chip Taylor, one of my favorite song writers ever. This is one of the best ever.

Liverpool Five – Any Way That You Want Me
Spiritualized covered this as their first single. Doesn’t matter who performs his songs, a Chip Taylor cover is always great.

The Troggs – I Want You
Spacemen 3 did a cover of this as well.

Tim Hardin – Don’t Make Promises
Sounds kind of similar to Spiritualized’s “Take Your Time”, doesn’t it?

Link Wray – Rumble
Tremolo songs up next.

The Staple Singers – This May Be the Last Time
Tremolo, and gospel. I really need to take a deeper dive into their music, love this track.

The Black Ryder – Santaria
Semi-recent band, they haven’t released much, but their album is great.

Waylon Jennings – Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way?
Sounds like “Medication”, doesn’t it?

Junior Kimbrough – I Gotta Try You Girl
Found out about Junior from a cover that Spiritualized did. This song has also been remixed by Daft Punk.

Fred Hughes – I Can’t Make It Without You
The chromatic scales on this are heavily reminiscent of Spiritualized’s “Come Together”.

Girls – Lauren Marie
I never liked the placement of this song anywhere on this playlist, but I feel the need to include a Girls song in here. His songs remind me a lot of Spiritualized.

Dennis Wilson – River Song
J Spacemen is often compared to Brian Wilson, but honestly this song seems like the foundation for Spiritualized. Ladies and Gentleman’s title track is basically a modern take on The Beach Boys’ “Forever” (also written by Dennis).

Funkadelic – Talk About Jesus
This song is not on Spotify (used to be), which is a shame. This kicks off the Jesus songs. It’s a really repetitive gospel track with cool tremolo guitar notes. Check it out if you like this playlist!

BRMC – Gospel Song
I’m not sure where I read it, but I think J Spacemen contributed some production role on this album. Song reminds me of Spacemen 3’s “Soul 1”.

Brian Jonestown Massacre – Jesus
If Jason Pierce is the angel on my shoulder, then Anton Newcombe is the devil on the other.

The Electric Prunes – Our Father, Our King
Did Spacemen 3’s “Walking with Jesus” take inspiration from this song?

I Break Horses – I Kill Your Love, Baby!
Found out about them when they opened for Nada Surf (I think) many years ago, and so glad I did. I can tell she’s a huge fan of the album Pure Phase (my favorite Spiritualized album), and they in fact made a beautifully serene cover of “All of My Tears”.

Evie Sands – I Can’t Let Go
Chip Taylor song, covered by the always great Evie Sands. Pete Kember (the other half of Spacemen 3) has covered this song.

13th Floor Elevators – Don’t Fall Down
Huge influence for Spacemen 3, they’ve covered them (including this song) a number of times. One of the great pioneers of psychedelic rock.

The Stooges – Shake Appeal
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve read that seeing this album cover was a life defining moment for Jason.

? & The Mysterians – 96 Tears
Song fucking rules. Jason incorporates the lyrics to this song on the extended live version of “All of My Thoughts”.

Mercury Rev – Holes
Not sure where to place this song honestly, but it would feel wrong not to include them as a contemporary artist.

Suicide – Dream Baby Dream
I recently saw a commercial for some fragrance or fashion line called “Daisy”. They had a Suicide song in there that sounded really cool. Spiritualized has used this song in their playlist during stage set up on their most 2022 recent tour.

The Everly Brothers – All I Have to Do is Dream
Ending the playlist on a dream.

Terry Riley - You’re Nogood
Or maybe a fever dream. This song is fucking nuts.

One of my favorite topics, since I'm always interested in the stuff Jason's listening to.

On the most recent date, I clocked a few tunes over the PA that were clearly picked by the man himself: T. Rex's "Spaceball Ricochet" (I've never heard him talk about T. Rex, but he does sport a T Rex tee on occasion, so one assumes he's a fan), a song called "Cuttin' Out" by the Pirates (not Johnny Kidd's Pirates, but a garage band of that name from Texas), Pete Townsend and Ronnie Lane's "April Fool," and "Sweet Inspiration" by the Sweet Inspirations. These were mixed in by some of the usual suspects--Suicide, etc--so I assume this mix is Jason-designed, though I could be wrong

Thank you so much for these! I'm adding them to my other (non-sequenced) "Radio Spaceman" playlist.

Ok, so there’s a lot out there!

Have no time tonight to get involved with this properly:

At last night's gig in Birmingham I sat using the song identifier function on Deezer- that is, until my 4G ran out! I got the following:

Sweet Inspiration- The Sweet Inspirations
I've Forgotten More Than You'll Ever Know- Esther Phillips
Rise And Fall Of Jimmy Stokes- Link Wray
I'm the Loneliest Fool- Jack Nitzsche
Draft Morning- The Byrds
Roll On Babe- Ronnie Lane and Slim Chance
Decadence- Kevin Ayers

And then, at the end, the instrumental version of God Only Knows by The Beach Boys (perfect exit music after a sublime performance!).

Some more shazams from the Manchester warm up playlist...

The Flamingos - Love Walked In
The Troggs - Gonna Make You
The Duprees - Once in a While

Also a 13th Floor Elevators or more likely Roky Erikson song that didn't get picked up by shazam

Are these songs being played loud at the shows? 'Cos in Dublin they were at the volume of low level chatter and if something did catch your ear you couldn't hear it properly. They should have been played at the same volume as The Beach Boys at the end when the lights came up. At least then it would've hyped the crowd a bit more. Or annoyed them.

Sunray kindly linked above to radio DJ sets…

…this one was the absolute moment I got into music from a fairly established set of “what I like” to “what the fuck is this?” and “this is incredible!”

The original recording - I actually taped this off Mary Anne Hobbes Breezeblock show at the time (ok, I went out that night but my pal had a stereo with a timer… it was grand until many years later it I found it had been set to mono… so most of this stuff was missing extra guitars etc - but it was raw and primal and the drums were massive: what a way to get into to my mind this abstract or unusual music)

The original cassette - yikes! - is long gone, I had a really pristine copy which I sent to a guy in Canada who promised he would send back early Spz singles & b-sides, etc (this was before downloading was a thing) - via the very first website version of this.

Guy from Canada… I’ve not forgotten

Anyway, here’s the best I can do as a Spotify playlist. Mental that all those songs are all there now, at one point many years ago on the board I would ask what such a song was, the track listing on Teletext(!) the was completely wrong in many regards and some songs were titled ‘Unknown’. Some of those who’ve been here for a while might recall… the struggle was real!

Rock and roll is best when there’s an air of mystery… maybe.

You don’t get the BBC adverts and such, you don’t get the 7” edit of ‘Mindtrain’, you won’t get the awesome raw monolithic compressed heavy power of the original broadcast but…

It’s a beautiful mix of music.

10 - 12 seconds crossfade in settings sounds more like it did at the time. 🔥

Thank you for the playlist...also I'm kind of laughing right now because the song that I've been searching for is a song that I described as "Sam Cooke like vocals with a very emotional end", could possible be "A Change Is Gonna Come", but I want to confirm if anyone else heard it played over the PA. Specifically for the 2022 Santa Cruz show.

…but then I saw Lee Bracket - I Saw You Standing in the Dark on another one of your June 2018 Spaceman playlists (was this another J Spaceman DJ set?), and it kind of reminds me of that one!

These are excellent, Sunray. Did you create them, or know who did? I recall the ATP 2014 set (which was the basis for my Radio Spaceman playlist), but I don't think I've heard most of those Breezeblock mixes. I'm glad they're compiled as MP3s too, because one minute a song is available on streaming platforms, the next minute it's gone!

A few things I noticed. On the ATP 2014 set, there is an unidentified African song that's played after T. Rex - Jewel (around the 39 minute mark). After many, many attempts, My Shazam miraculously identified it as Raa - Vispen. This is not the actual song...but it seems to share the same sample. I looked at the liner notes for the Raa song, and it's credited to Mwanza Town Choir - Yesu Kamwita Zakayo (which if you listen to it, is NOT the same song). I sent the artist a message on instagram, hopefully he can help me find the original source.

For Breezeblock Feb 12, 2002: The missing song in between "Believe Me Darling" and "Day by Day" is Peter Brotzman Group - Fuck De Boere.

For Breezeblock September 2, 2003: I see a lot of people identifying the Velvet Underground song as "Rock and Roll", when it should really be "Oh Sweet Nuthing (Early Version)".

It's awesome that these are compiled as mp3s, I couldn't find Paul Wibier's "Satan", and was about ready to buy it on discogs to make an mp3 rip of it! Do songs 38 - 78 come from any specific DJ sets, or are these songs that Jason has mentioned?

That 1998 mix was the first one I heard too. My mate taped it direct off the radio the night it was broadcast. I've just realised it wasn't in the folder of mixes I uploaded but I was sure I had it on mp3. Maybe not. Pretty sure I still have the tape though (it's got a Sonic Boom Breezeblock session on the other side. Also recorded by my mate straight from the broadcast).

@mywhitenoise: No, I didn't create them. Tbh i'm not even sure where they came from. I guess they popped up here in the distant past.
The Jason Spaceman 90 I think was originally 50? It got expanded and all songs upgraded to 320mp3 by an ex-member here.
As for songs 38-78? I think they have been mentioned and/or assumed to have been an influence. I do see Mindtrain in there and that was in the first Breezeblock mix so maybe they have been played out somewhere.

I'd imagine there's someone here that has more knowledge of them all than me and could shed some light on the provenance.

Don't know if you're interested but there is also a Spacemen 3 130 and Bobby Gillespie 80 I could upload if you want.

I have an mp3 of “Satan” somewhere.

And the song on the ATP 2014 mix is this:

“Yesu Ka Mkwebase - Noviciat De Soeurs Missionaires De Notre-Dame D'Afrique & Four Religious Drummers“ from a Mississippi records comp. It’s ace isn’t it?

Guess the Shazam people had an off night!

sunray wrote: Mon May 16, 2022 11:56 am That 1998 mix was the first one I heard too. My mate taped it direct off the radio the night it was broadcast. I've just realised it wasn't in the folder of mixes I uploaded but I was sure I had it on mp3. Maybe not. Pretty sure I still have the tape though…
What? Really?

NOW you say this. The raison d'être for me getting into this whole weird world of music and the years spent trying to get a hold of that again…

I’ll PM you when I can, owe you anyway!

It’s odd, many years back I messaged a person here who had a copy of that mix, and he kindly sent me it, and it was in the left channel only 🤣

There was a version on SoundCloud - maybe still is - but it missed a bunch of songs.

For pure nostalgia reasons, I just want to have a reasonably copy of that again. The beep tones fading into Dr Alimantado… and Jason’s insistence at playing Sam Cooke again from the start after Mary Ann Hobbes does her ending chat.

I had no idea who this Elvis singer was with the dense production until a couple of years later, through the music press and stuff it was:

Dion. The mighty Dion. ‘Born to Be With You’. That song was and is so fucking amazing, it never gets old for me, every time I hear it I have such an emotional response.

I named my son after that song. True story…

I love you guys. Agree about Dion too. I discovered Born To Be With You from a joint interview with Jason and Bobby G, that whole album is amazing.

I have "Jason Spaceman 90" (and a simialr "The Spacemen 3 130") collection which i think is the one referred to above. Just a crazy-good selection of tracks. No idea of the original premise behind either collection. Discovered so much good music through these 8)

Had some time to finally organize my other J Spacemen related playlist, Radio Spaceman, to resemble something more coherent. This is something that I had loosely started to put together in 2014, I believe, but it was unorganized and messy. It includes all the radio/DJ sets that I'm aware of in the order that they were played (duplicate songs removed, and I also tried to limit it to 1 song per artist...so if an artist appeared in multiple DJ sets, only one was chosen to represent this specific playlist). I've still got about 3 hours of songs that I cut out, and may add in if I can find good placement for them.

thank you mywhitenoise :D
i get some serious kicks from these Spz related comps. the JSpacemen 90, Sp3 130 and the Bobby Gillespie comps when I first heard them were quite the turning point in how I listened to music (correct me if Im wrong but I think it was FMSPaceman we have to thank for those)
Listening to Radio Spaceman now Im thinking this one slots in with the above hall of fame very nicely.

They were around before FM Spaceman was a member i think. I seem to recall Olliemorr sharing them but they were smaller then (55/110/50). FM Spaceman upgraded them all to 320 rather than the variable 128-320 the files were beforehand. I think it was also him that added the extra tracks, but i'm not sure to be honest.

EDIT: A bit of searching around here found this:

"Olliemorr wrote:
The Spacemen 3 110 (605MB)

The Jason Spaceman 55 (337MB)

...and as a bonus, The Bobby Gillespie 50 (261MB)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LIP75P5I

HUGE thanks to FMSpaceman on LastFM for putting these comps together (Hello FMSpaceman, I know you're watching). I'm indebted to the guy as he's introduced me to a shitload of stuff I'd never heard of before, and as a result it's sent me off on all kinds of new tangents of musical discovery. 8)"

So it was FM after all, before he joined here.

Thought I would bump this, in case anyone can add to the list of songs played before Spiritualized's set for this new tour.

That's the same tape that was playing before the San Diego show a few months back. ("Roll On Babe" is Ronnie Lane & Slim Chance, tho.)

thank you for this thread. i remember “to know him is to love him” by the teddy bears playing before a couple of shows in the fall of 2013.
“porpoise song,” “true love will find you in the end,” “spaceball ricochet,” and “decadence” were definitely played before the atlanta show last saturday ♥️

Loved hearing "Citadel" from Their Satanic Majesties Request (favorite Rolling Stones album!) at The Vic in Chicago, looks like this was played at other venues too 👍
