Spice of life

Greatest movies ever made? Greatest Books ever written? Greatest albums that you've heard? And if you're feeling unusually cultured, who is your favorite painter and... why the hell not, culture?

Movies--not really a "movie" person

Books--in no particular order

William Faulkner-Sanctuary
Jean-Paul Sartre-The Age of Reason (one of the only philisophical novels I've ever read that still manages to be a decent novel)
Vladimir Nabakov-Ada (better than Lolita, in my opinion)

Albums--off the top of my head, I don't have all morning

the Beatles-Abbey Road (would have been better if a couple of songs had been relegated to the mess that was the White album, or I would nominate an edited White album)

the Verve-Urban Hymns (not their best songs, no, but the album was so cohesive-sounding, like it was all of one piece)

Spiritualized-Let it Come Down (what board are we on?)

Painter--

Francisco DeGoya
My Husband :)

But Annie Liebovitz?

But Annie Liebovitz?
Liebowitz's photos in the mid 80s (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Meryl Streep, Blues Brothers, Sylvester Stallone, Bette Midler) are among the best examples of portrait photography I can think of.

Somehow I managed to miss out Richard Avedon - he was the greatest portrait photgrapher ever. Possibly the greatest photographer too.

True, true, but I think Annie pissed her perfect eye a little in the nineties and certainly recently with her tedious goth-glam cover shoots. Ironic that so many misogynistic tropes could turn up in the work of someone who was ostensibly one of Susan Sontag's lovers. But then again I approach photography as a dilletante and exegete, with no particular technical knowledge.

Till I read on, I thought you were referring to Annie Sprinkle, but that's a whole other kind of artist.

Is Cindy Sherman a 'photographer'? She's good I think.

Andrew Marr
i fucking love andrew marr. i haven't got a telly any more but it's him alone that would convince me to buy a license. his cheeky asides, the ambiguous switches between red and blue ties ... he's wonderful.

an interesting guardian piece.

HOCKNEY!! Well done.

Of course Andrew Marr does a lot of good work on the wireless, although I never hear Start the Week (why do the schedulers presume that people with jobs are ONLY interested in 'politics' and 'news'?).

I reckon the new version will either total shit or absolutely brilliant. Johnny Depp should be ideal in the lead.
I hope they dont go all computer graphics on us and waste it. I liked the way the cinematic restrictions of the day added to the weird factor in places.

There was an interview with Robert Carlyle in the Times not long ago (last week?). It claimed that Porno is unlikely to be made; Carlyle would love to play Begbie again but Ewan McGregor isn't too enthusiastic about returning.

yeah sounds like ewan is getting a bit too big for his britches. the last decent movie he did was trainspotting.

thats brilliant to hear that robert carlyle is willing to return as begbie. he is one of my favourite actors. luckily he hasn't followed the same route as ewan.

american idol, ewan mcgregor. what a waste.

sorry sorry sorry, Big Fish was excellent. absolutely correct.

i think EVERYBODY is gonna be blown away with the new Wonka. we got to see a rather lengthy trailer for it. it looks spectacular.

an orbie, i think burtons combination of cg fx and his natural ability for weirdness should prove to be most entertaining.

I particularly hate remakes, but this one seems interesting. I read that in one scene that costed several million dollars and took 6 months to film, they have squirrels cracking nuts and putting them on the conveyer belt (something that was omitted in the 1970 film due to the complexity.)

A lot of excellent choices so I'll stick my picks to those not already listed.

Books -
Hunter Thompson - Fear & Loathing On The Campaign Trail
Patrick Suskind - Perfume
Ken Kesey - Sometimes A Great Notion
Bukowski - Ham On Rye
Henry Miller - Tropic Of Capricorn

Films -
The Amateur
Amelie
Drugstore Cowboy
Secrets And Lies
Jesus' Son

Albums -
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
Nick Cave - Lyre Of Orpheus/Abbatoir Blues
REM - Fabels Of The Reconstruction
The Verve - A Nothern Soul

As I visited a Dali gallery in Paris the other day, I'll have to give him a mention. His biblical orientated work really got me going.

Also, RE. Trainspotting/Porno film. I read a Danny Boyle interview about a year ago where he said that they'd started filming it but all the main cast looked too tanned and healthy. The easy living of success had softened them up and that they didn't seem keen on losing weight etc.

Wasn't there also supposed to be a film about 'On The Road' with Brad Pitt coming out? Could be a real mess but I thought it was all finished.

I didn't know that Danny Boyle is going to make the 'Porno' adaptation ? He has a current movie out in the states, " Millions " that has glowing reviews. Bit of a children's movie, but still want to see it, the movie trailer looks good. Big fan of his body of work, thought 'Shallow Grave' was brilliant and that 'The Beach' was under-rated. He had a falling out w/ Ian McGregor, because McGregor wanted the part in 'The Beach' , but gave it to DiCaprio, did they mend their differences ?

i don't think so, or not unless it's happened recently. as far as i understand, ewan had been given the part, or was naturally expected to play it, but danny boyle went for leonard and a bigger budget. i like leonardo dicaprio, but you can watch the beach and hear the lines being said in ewan's voice, it was meant for him.
