Shit yeah. Good call. I guess another obvious one would be James Brown at the Apollo 1962.

Also spaced on leaving out Cash's Live at San Quentin and Live at Folsum Prison.

I also love the live tracks that Spiritualized have included as b-sides in the past. The live stuff off the Electricity EPs (from their tour with Neil Young) are more intense than the same songs recorded on the Royal Albert Hall CDs, IMO.

I agree with you ericbdm, 'Take your time', 'Cop Shoot cop', 'Shine a light'... they're all much more intense than on the RAH album.

- Ike and Tina in Paris (1971)
- The Rolling Stones - Brussels Affair (1973)
- ...t.b.c.

first live album I ever heard was It's Alive by Ramones. Still brilliant.

Agree with many of the ones listed so far.
Others for honourable mention...

Live'r Than God - Thee Hypnotics
Stripped - Rolling Stones
Live - The Cure
and the Roir Sessions for Television and Question Mark and the Mysterians

and is no-one mentioning Kick Out The Jams cos it's too obvious..?

agreed, except for the soul stirrers shrine concert, 1955. nearer my god will rip your fucking head off, and if it doesn't, where did you leave it... the bit with sam singing about his mother stealing off to pray... too fucking much! believe it, sam was the most gospel singing MF ever. it's too soulful to be denominational. everybody get nearer

live'r by the hypnos was choice also.

Trane live at the Village Vanguard. Either volume, whatever your poison might be. For me, the first one. There's also Birdland and a good one with Cannonball Adderley as leader.

One of Otis's.

ohhhh thanks stimey, thats on my hitlist now. is it readily available or some obscure bootleg?? and if so...

and what the fuck, only becuase i just got it on dvd, hendrix at the monterey pop, simply jaw dropping. total machismo and "cock rock" to the max, but what a performance. apparently he had to upstage the who, both of the bands had a slight tussle when deciding who should open up, a coin toss decided it and our boy made history.

I have eight records with trane - none of them a concert..
Guess I´ll have to get this one then..
Cannonball at the lighthouse is a favourite.

what no 'kick out the jams'?

sam cooke at harlem square club for me too. and james brown at the apollo. loads mentioned here that i want to check out now though, great stuff.

suicides '23 minutes over brussels' is pretty (in)tense! amazing how you can feel the bad vibe, but it just serves to bring out the bands fantastic attitude all the more.

''listen, we're just a bunch of poor musicians like you, give us our microphone back.....please....

...well FUCK YOU!!

haha, i'm listening to that live suicide album right now. nice packaging as a bonus disc!

speaking of james brown, i can't decide if it's worth shelling out $60 bucks to see him in a few weeks.

help me out here crew, would you go guys??? is he 'still' worth $60 bucks. the last thing i remember hearing about james brown wasn't his show stopping live performances, but his cracked up ass fleeing across state lines while beating his ol' lady being followed by a gaggle of cop cars. and oohhh that mug shot.

hmmmmmmmm? but it is the hardest working man in showbiz. i just don't know.

ohhh and back to the live albums, how about tom waits and nighthawks at the diner.

well ok it's still technically a live show but the audience is all friends of his, and i beleive it was recorded in the middle of the afternoon, but hey it's still done live and it's one hell of an album.

'coffee just wasn't strong enough to defend itself.'

p/s- anybody here ever see tom waits live, i would love to hear some funny tale or great story, he's simply brilliant.

Good call squirrel, Live at the Star Club is an incredible album! Pretty much from the first note it's BAAAM!

Also glad to see Dark Magus there too. I must also add 'Agharta' to the most strung out live evil I have heard. You can't really dip into that music, you really have to immerse yourself right in it. In at the deep end...

Shonn, you ought to here Big Time by Tom Waits, it's a mostly live album and is great. Some good anecdotes inbetween songs :D

HOLD UP!!! What Primal Scream live album is this? Is it readily available in the UK? I've never heard of it before.

Oh, my vote go to Kraftwerk's Minimum Maximum, pretty much a best of, and Neon Lights is just stunning (if only they'd also done Europe Endless)

bza, big time is brilliant, i had forgotten all about that album. we are going for pizza at napoleans where tom used to work at. it's excellent little hole in the wall, the sam guy still owns.

if your'e ever over here, you gotta slice on me.

and the live primal scream album that is most readily available comes as a japanese import.

and yes jiggity jig, the 14 minute version of maggot brain is scorching!!

as for the 'rust never sleeps' i always cringe when i hear one hippy tell an audience of hippies "if we try really hard maybe the rain will go away".
