The jesus and mary chain

Can anybody recommend a good place to start with this band? Are there any records to avoid or should I just take the plunge?

i think 'psychocandy', 'honeys dead' or 'stoned and dethroned' would all be good places to start...'stoned and dethroned' is their most acoustic album...or for a more general introduction, the '21 singles' comp does what it says on the box. =)

Psychocandy is excellent. Darklands is good. If you like those you'll probably be fond of the rest, although outside those two I often find them tiresome.

Get Psychocandy first. It represents their classic, fuzzed out feedback drenched sound while making your ears bleed and your brain smile. Then grab Darklands for its dark, beautiful balads.
I think I feel it coming on

Cool. Thanks for the advice. I think I'm gonna go with Psychocandy to begin with. I understand the Raveonettes sound like tjamc and I really like them so thought I'd go back to the source. Next stop, ebay.

You need to start with Psychocandy, cos it's where they started.
Darklands was one of the soundtracks to my student/slacker days in the late 80s and still sounds ace.
i think there's a thread on here somewhere where we all chipped in by rating the JAMC albums in order 1 to 6.

Also, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club make pretty good JAMC albums.

You could always buy 21 singles , which funnily enough is a CD of all their singles

I would defo start with PSYCHOCANDY and DARKLANDS first, this is there best albums, SOUND OF SPEED is also good, but to be honest anything the JAMC did was fantastic.

Early vinyl?! I'm interested! I have the vinyl of psychocandy, but it's in pretty poor condition. Then just busted the tapes for years, until I got the Cd's. You thinking of selling them? Are they 7's?

munki is good as well.

Also, if you can get hold of it, check out William Reid's 4 Track solo EP- 'Tired Of Fucking'. I listened to it for the first time in about 5 years the other day and it's great

snickered at by venal press cunts but containing CRACKING UP - a tune to square up with any of the more lauded early work
i would like to savagely beat some NME writers with the very guitars from which william wrings such beautifully celestial dischord

who digs lazycame?
it's all about 'bluejune'

and MUNKI recieved quite good reviews and press in the states.

I used to think John Mulvey was alright. But he loved SP3 and all things related...
Although it was Menswear that made me realise the above.

good call
strange you should mention it, cos he's one of the very few i had any time for
aside from a love of spacemen he was one of the few who dared champion the beach boys beyond the obvious reference points (PET SOUNDS, SURFS UP) at the time

and yes --- menswear were vermin
