BOB DYLAN'S XM RADIO SHOW - Dreams, Schemes and Themes
In case you needed any more proof of Dylan's colossal genius, check out his radio show on XM Radio!
Each show has a different theme, the first being 'the weather' , and the second one 'mothers'.
In the show the great man selects tracks related to the theme and drops insightful nuggets of infomation on his choices. He even cracks jokes and reads out supposedly fake emails!
Even if you don't like Him, you'll still love this. Or at the very least find it interesting. (That's if you haven't just come on here to chat about Alfa Romeos).
Obviously the greatest thing to ever bless the airwaves (along with John Peel), He plays a mix of old and obscure, yet once popular 'lost classics', as well as complete surprises; ranging from Rock n' Roll, RnB, country, blues etc - really insightful and inspired picks. And if you've ever wondered, as I'm sure you have, just what Dylan would sound like dryly reciting the lyrics to LL Cool J's banger 'Momma Said Knock You Out...' then wait no longer (second show). His voice, to me, doesn't sound at all fucked, perhaps clarifying my unique belief that 'he's singing like that deliberately'...
Topics range from everything from Prince (mentioned in both shows!) to the prevailent racial prejudices of America in the 30s. It's like he's been doing it all his life. Simply amazing!
Enjoy!
(and again, you don't need to be a Dylan obssesive like myself to find these shows interesting... )

The two I've managed to download are absolutely brilliant. Thank you so much for posting those links duppy. For someone who's never been particularly into Dylan I'm currently in the strange position of reading Chronicles on the train, watching the second part of No Direction Home in the evenings and listening to those radio shows when I can and loving all of them.

Episode 4 is all about Baseball.
Even if you don't like baseball, Dylan, radio shows, or even music; this is still indespensible as the best history lesson you'll ever have.
And even if you've just come here to sell cheap wicker furniture or to promote carbon dating, you'll still dig this. And that.
"Theme Time Radio Hour, your private pillow pal..."
here's a few links to get them, in case certain machines are acting funny. all the same show:

Just listening to the "weather" one at the moment...fucking class!
I'm not a massive Bob fan but you really warm to him listening to this. The music is fantastic. Not the stuff I would usually listen to so a real treat. Really liked the Hendrix track.
Can't acess the 2nd episode from Duppy's original post though. Never been able to use Rapid Share on my computer and the Send Space link states that the download is no longer available. Can anyone put another link for it on here for me please?

Tried opening it on different browsr?
I'm working on (a possibly over ambitious) project with all the shows plus art work on one place, that I'll put here.
here it is on rapidshare. Got a problem with that? Take it up with my lawyer.

MODERN TIMES
this'll get it's own thread soon (thought it abit early..), but I couldn't hold off any longer with this info, don't want the New Musical Express to get there first...
Bob Dylan is to release his new album Modern Times, on the 28th August. It's 10 tracks long, and it's reported to '[mix] the blues variations of Love and Theft,...ballads, and the darker, swampier vibe of Time out of Mind and Oh Mercy.' As with the last one, Dylan has produced it himself. The enlightened few that have heard it claim the record is 'staggering by any standards', and 'contains at least three all time classics'.
It closes with the epic 21 minute track 'Ain't Talkin', which one reviewer has declared 'possibly Dylan's most powerful closer ever'. This is the man that has ended records with Desolation Row, Sad Eyed Lady, and Highlands. !
There is a little speculation that the title is a nod to the Charlie Chaplin movie of the same name. The movie itself is silent but was made when 'talkies' were being produced. He has mentioned Chaplin before in the sleevenotes to World Gone Wrong where he also says 'these times are the new Dark Ages'.
It was recorded with only his current touring band. (and an excellent band they are too).
Track titles include:
When The Sun Goes Down
Thunder on the Mountain
Spirit on the Water
Workingman's Blues
Neddy Moore
Ain't Talkin'
(titles sound abit Greatful Deadish to anyone else?)

wow ... i hadn't heard that ain't talkin' was twenty minutes long, that's incredible. i think further speculation, perhaps unreliable, suggested that two of the songs included would be re-recorded, rearranged versions of his sixties stuff, notably 'she's your lover, now', but i'm not convinced. i think a rerecorded she's your lover now might pop up on a blonde on blonde reissue out sometime soon, if anywhere at all.
i seem to remember hearing that highlands was worked down from a thirty seven minute long thing. apparently marvin gaye's inner city blues was an hour long when it began ...

i am getting quite excited by the new record now. ok, his voice is as massive a hurdle as it has ever been (it took me about two or three years to love love and theft - but im glad i do as mississippi is one of his greatest ever numbers), and live he isnt very good... but, his last two records have been incredible (time) and really great (l&t). and news of a 21minute track has me buzzing. highlands from time out of mind was a corker and should have went on for another 16 minutes so im hoping this fulfils(!) what was lacking ( ) in that.
maybe the re-recorded/arranged stuff will appear on a bonus disc such as times they are a changing and i was young when i left home which were given a bonus disc on love and theft.
ive actually got blonde on blonde outtakes, which feature an 8 minute shes your lover now, which ill upload for you people now unless you dont already have them?

It's gonna be on the new 2cd set Blonde on Blonde.anorthernsoul wrote:wow ... i hadn't heard that ain't talkin' was twenty minutes long, that's incredible. i think further speculation, perhaps unreliable, suggested that two of the songs included would be re-recorded, rearranged versions of his sixties stuff, notably 'she's your lover, now', but i'm not convinced. i think a rerecorded she's your lover now might pop up on a blonde on blonde reissue out sometime soon, if anywhere at all.

jadams, and anyone else wishing to get it, I modified my post, and put it up again in both mp3 and wma. checked 'em both and they both work now. Should be good for hundreds of clicks and grabs and all that good stuff. Don't know why the drink one went so fast, you must be a bunch of alcoholics.

"strange things are happening like never before" strange things alright -- strange things like courage becoming befuddled & nonfundamental. evil charlatans masquerading in pullover vests & tuxedos talking gobbledygook, monstrous pompous superficial pageantry parading down lonely streets on limited access highways. strange things indeed -- irrationalist bimbos & bozos, the stuff of legend, coming in from left field -- infamy on the landscape -- "pray to the Good Lord" hit the light switch!
i love world gone wrong and its amazing liner notes... we need more of this. somebody might be a little cracked, but at least he's going down fighting.

The first verse on Modern Times:
"Thunder on the mountain, fires on the moon, There's a ruckus in the alley and the sun will be here soon / I was thinking about Alicia Keys, couldn't help from crying / when she was born in Hell's Kitchen, I was living down the line / I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be / I been looking for her even clean through Tenessee..."
the masterpieces are said to be:
Working Man's Blues
Netty Moore
Ain't Talkin' Just Walkin'
(as reported in todays Observer)

This month in Uncut there is an artical on Modern Times:
the juicy bits:
"Modern Times, they are a changin': Dylan righteously condemns greed, wealth and power on his new album."
"...a brand new masterpiece, something to rank along side 'Highway 61 Revisited', 'Blonde On Blonde', 'Blood on the Tracks', every word and note of it..."
"'Modern Times roars from the speakers, a stormy noise...60 minutes..."
"Think [of] 'Love and Theft' and even 'The Basement Tapes', and the way in whichthose songs were put together from a thousand old blues phrases, snatches of folklore, old stories and scraps of legend."
"Crunching Chicago-style blues and the '30s jump jazz first essayed on 'Love and Theft' are also musical touchstones. Dylan, traditionally cavalier in the studio, apparently spent uncharacteristically long hours working on vocal tracks. As a result he gives a performance that's positively Sinatra-esque in it's sly mastery of phrasing and heartfelt feeling; it ranks among his best-ever singing. In producing, arranging and bandleading, too, he's handled every aspect...with consummate care and attention."
"The precedents for this are the mid 70s trilogy...their mixture of bilious rage and devotion here replaced by a welcome warmth, self-mocking humour and impish sexiness. Dylan...sounds invigorated, even indomitable."
"...images of bad weather, plagues and poverty blow through 'Modern Times'. The overall feeling is of decent, ordinary Americans gathering against apocalyptic uncertainty; storms not of their making."
"Dylan's politics are here indirectly expressed, but as deep rooted as in any of his classic protest songs."

holy shit! saw him at roskilde festival last week and... he was out of this world. probably in the top three shows ive ever seen. he even bettered axl who had played the night before.
1. Maggie's Farm (Bob on keyboard)
2. The Times They Are A-Changin' (Bob on keyboard)
3. Down Along The Cove (Bob on keyboard)
4. This Wheel's On Fire (Bob on keyboard)
5. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again (Bob on keyboard)
6. Positively 4th Street (Bob on keyboard)
7. Highway 61 Revisited (Bob on keyboard)
8. Blind Willie McTell (Bob on keyboard)
9. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (Bob on keyboard)
10. Watching The River Flow (Bob on keyboard)
11. Masters Of War (Bob on keyboard)
12. Summer Days (Bob on keyboard)
(encore)
13. Like A Rolling Stone (Bob on keyboard)
14. All Along The Watchtower (Bob on keyboard)
fuck, it was so fucking brilliant. the only minor disappointment was blind willie mctell, which is probably my favourite dylan number (and maybe why i found it disappointing). its reworking just didnt... work for me. but even still, it was a set straight out of a jukejoint in the deep south transfigured to a giant outdoor groovefest. and the balls and spite and viciousness of pos. 4th street, masters of war, rolling stone etc. were as wonderfully intact as they have been since the day they were recorded. river flow, cove and summer days as joyous and slinky as one would dare dream and watchtower transformed into a defiant call to arms that any other [supposed] rock n roll act would wilt under. none of them know what its worth, the fuckers.
he was really, really amazing. saw him a few years ago in belfast and, though he was hindered by the stadium setting and its accompanying problems, was left really disappointed. in denmark he was the dylan of my dreams. just the hippest cat around, with an arsenal of tunes that if you couldnt rejoice in, you dont deserve to. and an arsenal of tunes transformed into as perfect a soundtrack for an extended summer boogie, yet never losing any of their emotional pact. he was amazing.

today on Dylan watch...
Modern Times tracklisting:
Thunder On The Mountain
Spirit On The Water
Rollin' And Tumblin'
When The Deal Goes Down
Someday Baby
Workingman's Blues #2
Beyond The Horizon
Nettie Moore
The Levee's Gonna Break
Ain't Talkin
Four of the tracks are over six minutes long. Ain't Talkin' is 9, (unfortunately, not 21 minutes like I previously reported...).
Spirit On The Water is around 8 minutes.
Bonus DVD contains an additional four songs. Don't know if they're new or not.
